Portfolio Power: Assessing Student Research & Writing, Katy Kelly, Heidi Gauder

This session will describe the process and results of an instruction team’s pilot project to analyze student writing portfolios using ACRL standards. Following the English Department’s existing portfolio review methods, the team assessed portfolio samples from a class that received library instruction, as well as a second batch of samples from a class that did not. The team identified four specific learning outcomes, which were measured with a rubric. Outcome results indicated differences as well as similarities between the samples. This pilot helped refine the assessment process and it offered possibilities for changing the content of future library instruction sessions.

Increasingly higher numbers of older adults are returning to college campuses to earn degrees. Despite the recent economic recession and cuts to some state tuition waiver programs for older adults, many older students continue to pursue academic degrees on college campuses. Overwhelmingly, the literature that focuses on lifelong learning by older students has not incorporated degree-seeking students in their studies. This exploratory study is also driven by the role of libraries in serving this diverse student population. More than 80% of US college students report feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, almost half of whom describe their academic experience as traumatic or very difficult to handle. Stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that manifest in college students. Undergraduates seem particularly susceptible to these stressors, but only one in five seeks medical consultation for their issues. (American College Health Association [ACHA], 2013)

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) designed a 4-module online tutorial to meet the information literacy outcomes associated with a First Year Seminar course. The four modules that comprise the tutorial (Starting Your Assignment, Types of Information, Finding and Evaluating Information, and Using Information Ethically) were integrated into each First Year Seminar course through Blackboard, the university's Learning Management System (LMS). After completing each tutorial module, students were also required to take a quiz. Estimation Of Uninsurance Rate: Comparison Of Four Estimation Methods, Jackie Zhang, Renee Hotchkiss, Thomas Wan

Objective: Although high percentage of the uninsured is an important public policy issue, the discrepancies in both state and national estimates of the numbers of uninsured are reported. This study compares four advanced estimation methods for uninsurance, by using Florida Health Insurance Survey data as an example. Design: The four predictive models include decision tree, neural network, general logistic regression, and two-stage logistic regression. Risk factors to uninsurance are identified. Population: The study sample comes from the Florida Health Insurance Study data collected for the Florida Agency of Health Care Administration in 1999, representing the first large-scale study designed exclusively …

This poster explores the security, privacy and ethical considerations confronted in supporting digital media courses. Of particular importance to this presentation is the increased role digital storytelling and video composition plays in student learning. Supporting this shift in curriculum, librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy.
