In an effort to expand information literacy throughout our institution and to reach students who may not make it to the library for research help, our library faculty have developed a peermentoring program. The Library Ambassador Program entails hiring undergraduate students, providing them with two semesters of information literacy instruction and deploying them across campus to help students with their research.

Introduction: Psychosocial well-being variables from the Tennessee Intervention for Pregnant Smokers (TIPS) study, a longitudinal smoking cessation study in South-Central Appalachia, were investigated as potential predictors of smoking status.

Methods: A sample of 1031 pregnant women participated in an expanded 5A's (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) program, from 2008 to 2011. Measures of stress, self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and disordered eating collected by interview during the first trimester, or during the third trimester in a combined interview if participants began prenatal care late, were hypothesized to differ among three groups of participants: pregnant women who never smoked, pregnant women who smoked …

A Latent Class Analysis Of The Relationship Between Identity Development And Protestant Fundamentalism, Karin Bartoszuk, James E. Deal

Latent Class Analysis was used to explore different subgroups of individuals based on identity processes (using the DIDS) and protestant fundamentalism. Results indicate that a 6-group solution provided the best fit for our data. The six groups differed in terms of identity process variables (especially exploration in breath, exploration in depth, and identification with commitment), but only modestly in terms of fundamentalism.

Are we doing enough to market newly acquired book titles? Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year, both print and electronic. However, we rely on the expectation that users will periodically search our systems to discover newly acquired titles. Static lists and displays have been traditional marketing methods for libraries, but require tedious time and effort to maintain. Without a practical solution for an academic library, East Tennessee State University developed an automated process to generate book widgets utilizing data from Alma Analytics. Libraries purchase and subscribe to many new book titles each year. Instead of waiting for patrons to find these new titles in Primo, East Tennessee State University decided to develop automated book sliders using data from Alma Analytics. These sliders are now deployed in our subject guides, website, and on our digital displays. This presentation will give participants a high-level overview of our workflow and the tools we used. Faculty works (e.g. journal articles, conference proceedings) in institutional repositories (IRs) differ from other collections due to their inclination for duplication on other platforms: publisher websites, preprint servers, other IRs, etc. This characteristic can create interesting and different approaches to planning, populating, and promoting faculty works collections. Come to this roundtable discussion to talk about current and future practices related to faculty works in IRs. Share your current policies, procedures, and outreach methods. Brainstorm the ideal future for faculty works collections. And ultimately, consider possible changes to your current practices to make that future into a reality.

Academic libraries are at various stages of implementing institutional repositories (IRs) and related services at their institutions. In relation, the management of IRs are not uniformly managed by the same department in each library. This poster displays the results of a study that examined academic library websites to determine which departments mentioned IRs as part of their services and/or IR employees as part of their staff. Come and discover where IRs are being managed in academic libraries and how the results differ based on Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education.

This paper describes three initiatives to target our library's outreach efforts through better understanding the challenges faced by our international students. We first convened a research advisory focus group of international graduate students to hear first-hand the type of specific support students were seeking in their programs. The majority of our graduate students are African, a group severely underrepresented in library literature regarding instruction and services. All too frequently, instruction librarians’ only opportunity to teach students distills down to the fifty-minute, one-shot, make-or-break experience. We disseminate the essential information as requested—how to use the library, how to search the databases, and so on—with little time to explain why all the pieces fit together and why they are important. Worse, well-intentioned librarians often strive to cover as much as possible in these sessions, oversaturating and frustrating their student audience.

Even in settings of brief duration with no follow-up, another approach is possible. Rather than attempting to demonstrate everything at once, we can interject effective, real-life motivational tactics …

Altmetrics derived from Twitter have potential benefits for institutional repository (IR) stakeholders (faculty, students, administrators, and academic libraries) when metrics aggregators (Altmetric, Plum Analytics) are integrated with IRs. There is limited research on tweets mentioning works in IRs and how the results impact IR stakeholders, specifically libraries. In order to address this gap in the literature, the author conducted a content analysis of tweets tracked by a metrics aggregator (Plum X Metrics) in a Digital Commons IR. The study found that the majority of tweets were neutral in attitude, intended for a general audience, included no hashtags, and were written …

Creating cost-effective and time efficient methods to complete tasks is necessary to maintain speedy and quality services expected by library patrons. Charles C. Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University uses Zotero (a free, online reference management software) as a tool to expedite the process of entering faculty scholarship metadata into the institutional repository (IR), Digital Commons@ETSU (https://dc.etsu.edu). Additionally, Sherrod Library integrated Zotero with SHERPA/RoMEO (a database of publishers’ policies) to automate the process of determining which full-text materials can be included in the IR.

Charles C. Sherrod Library was tasked with inputting faculty works in the open access institutional repository, Digital Commons@East Tennessee State University (https://dc.etsu.edu). In order for this project to remain sustainable with limited staffing and funding, they created a workflow around the integration of Zotero and SHERPA/RoMEO to input data and check copyright in addition to Unpaywall to locate open access documents. This presentation will detail the technical aspects and workflow of using these freely available products so that attendees can replicate all or relevant parts of this project. Self-Compassion And Adherence In Five Medical Samples: The Role Of Stress, Fuschia M. Sirois, Jameson K. Hirsch

Emerging evidence indicates self-compassion can be beneficial for medical populations and for medical adherence; yet, research to date has not fully examined the reasons for this association. This study examined the association of dispositional self-compassion to adherence across five medical samples and tested the extent to which perceived stress accounted for this association. Five medical samples (total N = 709), including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and cancer patients, recruited from various sources, completed online surveys. Self-compassion was positively associated with adherence in all five samples. A meta-analysis of the associations revealed a small average effect size (average r = .22, …

Diabetes mellitus is common among older people. Hypoglycemia is a sign of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and may lead to irritability, agitation, anxiety, hunger, and an excessive food intake, which in turn may make the control of diabetes more difficult. Excessive, inappropriate food intake is also a sign of Fronto-Temporal Dementia (behavioral variant: bvFTD). In this case study, we describe the events leading to an altercation that developed between an older diabetic patient with bvFTD and the staff in an Assisted Living Facility. Visual well-formed hallucinations, fluctuations in the level of cognition, and alertness and extrapyramidal signs are core features of dementia with Lewy bodies. Some patients realize that what they are seeing or hearing are just hallucinations and learn to accept them. Others, however experience these hallucinations as quite real and cannot be dissuaded from the firm belief that they are. In fact, efforts to dissuade them often serve only to confirm the often associated paranoid delusions and this may lead to a catastrophic ending. Hence, it is best not to contradict the patient. Instead, attempts should be made to distract the …

Insomnia is a common problem in older people, especially in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) whose circadian rhythm is often compromised. Insomnia exerts such a toll on caregivers that it is frequently the primary reason for seeking to institutionalize their loved ones. Three different types of insomnia are recognized: sleep-onset or initial insomnia, sleep maintenance or middle insomnia, and early morning awakening or late insomnia. Nocturnal hypoglycemia, as a cause of middle insomnia, is the main focus of this case study. Other types of insomnia are also briefly reviewed.
