Library Faith, Self-Care, And Academic Librarianship, John P. Delooper Apr 2024

Library Faith, Self-Care, And Academic Librarianship, John P. Delooper

Publications and Research

Librarianship has long been regarded as a service-oriented profession, compared with fields such as social work, teaching, nursing, and others with a high degree of emotional labor. The roots of this run deep, perhaps as far as Dewey, who spoke of a “library spirit,” which represented an extreme commitment to patron service. Dewey, who was obsessed with efficiency, both in his personal and professional life, created and popularized the American Library Association’s motto of “the best reading, for the largest number, at the least cost.” This motto, passed on as professional wisdom and taught in library schools for decades, was …

A Building Block Of Empathy: Establishing A Graphic Medicine Collection In An Academic Health Sciences Library., Jess King, Alison Bobal

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

To help address the well-being of the campus and contribute to empathy building amongst students pursuing careers as healthcare providers, an academic health sciences library built a graphic novel collection focused on comics that discuss medical conditions and health-related topics. The collection contains the experiences of patients, providers, and caregivers. The reader-friendly format of graphic novels provides an easy entry point for discussing empathy with health professions faculty and students. The collection has been used in the classroom during library instruction sessions, with the idea of integrating it within the curriculum.

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle Mar 2024

Demystifying Shibboleth: Adapting To Web Browser Privacy Changes, Simon Robins, Ben Daigle

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

University of Dayton Libraries added Shibboleth as an additional form of authentication for its licensed e-resources beginning in summer 2023. A major impetus for pursuing Shibboleth are the upcoming web browser changes that will obfuscate users’ IP addresses, set to occur in later 2023 and 2024 and something which will likely disrupt on-campus IP range access via EZproxy. Implementation of Shibboleth for an initial round of fifty-five e-resource platforms was relatively quick as a result of the University of Dayton’s participation in the InCommon Federation of U.S. higher education institutions, also known as an “authentication federation.” Methods for achieving the …

Through The Lens Of Time: Capturing The Ephemeral Magic Of The Circus, Rebecca Fitzsimmons Mar 2024

Through The Lens Of Time: Capturing The Ephemeral Magic Of The Circus, Rebecca Fitzsimmons

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Images in the Charles Clarke Circus Photographs Collection document the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1920s. Clarke, a leaper in the world-renowned aerial act, The Clarkonians, would have been in a relatively unique position to capture views of the circus from the vantage point of an insider. The resulting images carry the weight of that perspective. The photographs document important aspects of the circus, showing performers like Lillian Leitzel and May Wirth, spectacle wardrobe, practices and performances in the ring, and quieter moments behind the big top.

The images document a particular point in time, freezing …

The present study is an attempt to analyze the awareness and usage of the information sources and services offered by the D.V.G. public library, Kolar. A well-structured questionnaire was distributed to draw the data from the users. Responses from the users show that 95% of respondents are aware of …

Organizing Knowledge Through Revealing Data In Knowledgebases., Jian Qin, Qiaoyi Liu Mar 2024

Organizing Knowledge Through Revealing Data In Knowledgebases., Jian Qin, Qiaoyi Liu

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This paper uses the knowledgebases in the biomedical field as a case study to discuss the characteristics and requirements of knowledge organization (KO) practices and products by looking at the constructs, cross-linking, and curation methods. Modern knowledgebases such as Gene Ontology and Disease Ontology reflect the major expansions in KO to be more computational, portable (entification allows individual nodes to be extracted and used in combination with multiscale resources) and connected. Many techniques and methods used are not covered in KO textbooks. The interdisciplinary nature of KB development will be a worthwhile research area for the field of knowledge organization.
