The Campaign For Information Literacy: Politics, Personalities, & Perseverance, Elisa Acosta

In early 2010, Loyola Marymount University (LMU) adopted information literacy as an Undergraduate Learning Outcome. How did this transpire? Several strategies were used by librarians to promote information literacy, including the development of effective working relationships with the Office of Assessment and the Center for Teaching Excellence. Librarians also implemented several additional “High-Impact Educational Practices.” As a result, information literacy is now a new core curriculum outcome and faculty can apply for grant money to integrate information literacy into their courses. Tapping Into Student Feedback: Instant Surveying With A Tablet, Jennifer Jones, Bryan Sinclair

Ongoing assessment in academic libraries, particularly the measurement of student perceptions, preferences, and satisfaction, can be a challenge to schedule and execute. To address this challenge, Georgia State University Library piloted the use of tablet computers (iPads) loaded with survey software to poll subjects quickly in the library buildings. The result was a practical, hands-on model that maximized convenience for both subjects and researchers and that other campus administrative and academic units can easily adopt. Presenters will discuss methodology, the benefits of using tablets for formative assessment, recommendations, lessons learned, and ideas for future projects.

Student Affairs Program Evaluation: A Factor Analytic Solution, Oscar T. Mcknight

This program and presentation addresses the use of factor analysis in program evaluation. Specific focus will highlight the development and selection of marker items. The goal is to label and interpret factors according to targeted questions of interest. Therefore, results are not only descriptive, but predictive - with practical application to student retention and satisfaction. Process is useful for benchmarking best practices; measuring student satisfaction and learning; tracking student participation; evaluating program results; determining future program or service needs; and, assessing effectiveness of delivered programs.

In order to improve both library instruction and formative evaluation, EKU Libraries’ Public Services librarians located and adapted Samson & McCrea’s (2008) Peer Review of Teaching model (PROT). This presentation explained the three major elements of the PROT, what it specifically evaluates, how it was implemented, and what library instructors have gained from its use.
