Presented at the 2023 Archival Kismet Conference "Thinking About Stuff," this presentation explores historical documents found in the Robert H. Merrill papers in the Grand Valley State University Special Collections and University Archives.

In 1920, Robert Hall Merrill, a young civil engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, traveled to China to serve as Assistant Principle Engineer on a reconstruction project of a portion of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is the longest and oldest canal system in the world. Merrill's work produced a comprehensive survey report of the Grand Canal construction area near the Yellow River. The library's first diversity residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated inclusive recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. In 2015, the Libraries began scanning theses and dissertations that were housed in our offsite storage facility. Many of these were single copies that were not held by any other library in the world, so we have insured their long term preservation in both print and electronic forms. We began scanning theses and dissertations in a then-cramped Gunnin Architecture Library, and are now scanning theses and dissertations housed in Cooper. The digitization process results in the removal of the circulating copies from Cooper and Gunnin, the creation of an electronic copy that is accessible anywhere on campus, and one non-circulating …

Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas.
