Georgia State University Library administered LibQUAL+®, the library service quality survey, in 2003, 2005, and 2007. In 2009 when it was time to make decisions about another administration of LibQUAL+®, opinions were mixed. Some administrators liked the longitudinal data our previous iterations provided, and the comments always are quite valuable. On the other hand, the response rate drops each year, even with the introduction of incentives in 2007. Additionally, while LibQUAL+® provides useful information, it is not always specific to reports required by the university, such as the library’s institutional effectiveness report. The library decided on a two-fold approach. We …

Assessing the quality of online educational resources in a cost effective manner is a critical issue for educational digital libraries. This study reports on the approach for extending the Open Educational Resource Assessments (OPERA) algorithm from assessing vetted to peer-produced content. This article reports details of changes to the algorithm, comparisons between human raters and the algorithm, and the extent the algorithm can automate the review process.

Collaborative Marketing For Electronic Resources, Marie Kennedy

Connecting patrons to appropriate resources is a concern for libraries as more collections are removed from traditional shelves and placed in virtual spaces. The traditional marketing techniques of placing a new-books shelf near the front door or the positioning of ready reference volumes in a study area of a library does not apply to the electronic resource world because there are no physical volumes to view. It is vital to understand library efficacy in marketing electronic resources in order to connect a patron with the appropriate resource. Based on two recent analyses of articles published by libraries about their marketing …

Historic Recipe File (Digital Collection), Rose Fortier
Historic Recipe File (Digital Collection), Rose Fortier
Rose Fortier
For over 20 years, from the 1960s until the 1980s, librarians at the Milwaukee Public Library clipped hundreds of recipes from the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel. These recipes were heavily used at Ready Reference to answer telephone questions relating to various recipes. Before recipes were readily available on the internet, someone in the Milwaukee area looking for a particular recipe or cooking technique would call Ready Reference. These clipped recipes form the nucleus of the Historic Recipe File digital collection. Many of Milwaukee's favorite foods appear in the recipes in this collection. This collection provides a fascinating glimpse into …

Embedded Librarians: Moving Beyond One-Shot Instruction, Cass Kvenild, Kaijsa Calkins

This first book-length treatment of embedded librarianship showcases strategies for successfully embedding librarians and library services across higher education. Chapters feature case studies and reports on projects from a wide variety of colleges and universities, including some surprising settings and results. By joining varied groups of patrons and assisting their research over the long haul, embedded librarians commit themselves to service in a very different way than they did in traditional one-shot bibliographic instruction. In this collection, we see librarians using the embedded model to become valuable collaborators, trusted instructors, and partners in shaping the curriculum and broad institutional goals …

Fostering Collaborative And Interdisciplinary Research In Adult Education, Elizabeth Erichsen, Cheryl Goldenstein
Cheryl Goldenstein
The article investigates the interdisciplinary nature of research in adult education and suggests interactive research guides and other interactive resources for fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary inquiry. The purpose is to foster the development of a more functional literacy for information seeking as expressed across disciplines and the thoughtful integration of such information into academic and practical research projects within the field of adult education. Studies of researcher behavior are utilized to suggest some techniques and resources that could be employed more widely in conducting literature searches, including the creation and use of interactive resource guides. Some trends in libraries that …

Institutional Repositories At Small Institutions In America: Some Current Trends, Melissa Nykanen
Institutional Repositories At Small Institutions In America: Some Current Trends, Melissa Nykanen
Melissa Nykanen
The research reported in this article was undertaken to determine the level of implementation of institutional repositories (IRs) at small institutions enrolling fewer than 10,000 students. The study analyzed quantitative and qualitative data from IRs at a number of small institutions with the aim of observing relevant patterns and trends that may or may not be unique to small institutions. The study concludes that IRs at small institutions exist in significant numbers, and they exhibit some unique patterns, particularly in the benefits and challenges specific to small institutions, the association with IR consortia, and the focus on student research.
Personal Ontological Information Responsibility, Jodi Kearns, Rhonda Rinehart
Personal Ontological Information Responsibility, Jodi Kearns, Rhonda Rinehart
Jodi Kearns, PhD
Archivists and Librarians are subjected to social stereotypes by those outside and within the field of library and information science. Many of these role descriptions come from within the LIS professions themselves; the differences between information responsibilities of Archivists and Librarians are not clearly defined. The purpose of this paper is to dispel myths of distinguishable differences in information role responsibilities of Archivists and Librarians. A simple survey was developed and completed by Archivists and Librarians who volunteered to express, in their own words, up to three descriptions of what their information responsibilities are. Responses were recorded in the respondents' …

Local History From 8000 Miles Away: Early Colac Court Records In The United States, Arthur Fraas
Local History From 8000 Miles Away: Early Colac Court Records In The United States, Arthur Fraas
Arthur Mitchell Fraas
This article examines a volume of Colac court records from the mid-nineteenth century now held in the United States. It details the contents of the volume with an eye towards the nature of local justice in early Victoria and the ways in which legal records can provide a window into the past. In addition, the article calls attention to the increasingly global nature of local history studies. In sharing the story of this trans-oceanic ‘discovery’ and its subsequent digitisation, it provides a possible model for future directions in archival research.
Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson
Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson
Associate Professor Linda Dawson
This paper presents a background in cognitive processes such as problem solving and analogical reasoning for considering modeling from an object-oriented perspective within the domain of requirements engineering. The paper then describes a research project and the findings from a set of four cases which examine professional practice from perspective of cognitive modeling for object-oriented requirements engineering. In these studies, it was found that the analysts routinely built models in their minds and refined them before committing them to paper or communicating these models to others. The studies also showed that objectoriented analysts depend on analogical reasoning where they use …
