Personal Bias In Library Collections And Services, Sarah Steiner Aug 2011

Personal Bias In Library Collections And Services, Sarah Steiner

Sarah King Steiner

Regardless of library type, size, or the number of collecting librarians, selection based on personal values can be difficult or even impossible to avoid. Lack of exposure to varied sources or lesser known points of view can lead to unbalanced collections. Also adding to the difficulty of establishing balanced collections is the demise of the small publisher. Without a varied group of publishers, access to diverse views grows ever more limited. Large publishers that focus on the bottom line are less likely to publish works that may not find a mainstream audience. While the availability of materials lies outside the …

Committee Service And The Fledgling Librarian: Creating Community, Confidence, And Employability, Sarah Steiner

Sarah King Steiner

As a librarian-in-training, you face many demands on your time - classes, homework, a job, a marriage, a family - the list can go on and on. In the midst of all these school- and life-related responsibilities, committee service is something people often defer until after graduation. This is unfortunate, because the benefits of participation in committees, round tables, and other groups early in your career cannot be overstated. With only a small time commitment, local professional service can provide you with an invaluable - and underrated - way to meet people, gain experience in the profession, and land yourself …

Embedding In The 21st Century Academy: Crossing Curriculum And Geography, Kaijsa Calkins, Cass Kvenild

Cass Kvenild

Upon entering the new millennium, the University of Wyoming Libraries have expanded traditional one-shot library instruction and desk-bound reference into a suite of embedded services including reference, instruction, and curriculum and general education planning. Increased enrollment, along with increases in librarian consultations and instruction, have provided opportunities for innovation. Growing numbers of online students at the university encourage librarians to hone distance services and to experiment with new delivery methods. Librarians take care to follow both the ACRL guidelines for information literacy at the academy as well as the best practices for serving distance learners. Both distance and on-campus reference …

Re-Framing Information Literacy: Problem-Based Learning As Informed Learning, Wendy Holliday, Anne Diekema, Heather Leary Jul 2011

Re-Framing Information Literacy: Problem-Based Learning As Informed Learning, Wendy Holliday, Anne Diekema, Heather Leary

Heather Leary, Ph.D.

This study explores an online information literacy module that uses problem-based learning (PBL). The goal was to enable students to experience information literacy in a richer way, by moving away from a focus on locating information sources to one of information use in the construction of knowledge. A content analysis of the research journals and reflection papers of students (N = 15) in a distance education school library media administration endorsement program suggests that PBL was an effective approach for some students, but not others. Some students were motivated by working on authentic problems, and at least half the …

A Matter Of “Ba”: Knowledge Creation And Dissemination By Library Faculty At Grand Valley State University, Debbie Morrow Jul 2011

A Matter Of “Ba”: Knowledge Creation And Dissemination By Library Faculty At Grand Valley State University, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

What is “ba”? I am not a Japanese-speaker; I’m not deeply acquainted with Japanese culture. But in reading about ba and “learning organizations” and knowledge creation, it’s been very easy for me to discern seeds of ba at Grand Valley. In the effort underway for several years now to allow each discipline to define its own benchmarks and best practices, to develop its own specific guidelines for progress toward tenure and promotion, I see elements of ba. In support systems such as the Pew Faculty Teaching & Learning Center and its programs, I perceive ba. And most significantly, in the …

Information Workers In The Academy: The Case Of Librarians And Archivists At The University Of Western Ontario, Melanie Mills Apr 2011

Information Workers In The Academy: The Case Of Librarians And Archivists At The University Of Western Ontario, Melanie Mills

Melanie Mills

For much of its history, the organizational culture for academic librarians and archivists at The University of Western Ontario was primarily a culture of the practitioner. While librarians and archivists supported teaching, research and service at Western, they did not directly engage in it. As a result of grassroots efforts undertaken by members of Western’s academic community in the mid-2000s however, the potential contributions of information workers to the teaching, research and service mandate of University began to garner recognition. Born out of this collective awakening, a successful union drive and shortly thereafter an inaugural Collective Agreement for The University …

It Takes A Village To Raise A Tent: A Case Study In Pitching The Academic Library To Incoming Undergraduate Students, Melanie Mills, Marisa Mitchell

Melanie Mills

Rather than continuing to pursue formal inclusion in the University of Western Ontario’s O-Week program, Western Libraries shifted its approach to library orientation for incoming undergraduate students by launching its very own orientation campaign in the fall of 2005. The following article details the planning process and subsequent launch of Western Libraries inaugural system-wide library orientation initiative, whose aim was to position Western Libraries strategically as a key contributor to ‘the best student experience’ at Western. The overall impact of the campaign, as well as its influence on future orientation initiatives at the University of Western Ontario are also considered …

Libguides On Steroids: Expanding The Use Of Libguides To Justify Workload And Support Library, Carol Leibiger Mar 2011

Libguides On Steroids: Expanding The Use Of Libguides To Justify Workload And Support Library, Carol Leibiger

Carol A Leibiger

LibGuides have captured the attention of the American academic library world. Subject guides like LibGuides are intended to provide access to resources for disciplines or courses to supplement library instruction provided during one-shot sessions or at the reference desk. LibGuides are available to users when and where they are needed. A constant refrain in the literature on subject guides is the workload inherent in their creation and maintenance. LibGuides are easy to create. However, the time required to maintain LibGuides continues to have a strong impact on workload for otherwise busy librarians.

As Information Literacy Coordinator (ILC), the presenter faces …

Digital Rights Management As Information Access Barrier, Jason Puckett Mar 2011

Digital Rights Management As Information Access Barrier, Jason Puckett

Jason D Puckett

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a type of technological control used by information publishers and vendors to restrict use of electronic information. Librarians should be concerned about DRM because it privileges the rights of information providers to the point of infringing upon users’ fair use and other rights. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 put commercial interests first, casting information users as potential “pirates.” DRM causes difficulties for users of library search tools, audio books, e-books and other electronic media, and for libraries and archives in the area of long-term preservation. Librarians must advocate for users’ rights to …

Recapturing The Essence Of The Past: Integrating The University Press Into The Library, Richard Clement Jan 2011

Recapturing The Essence Of The Past: Integrating The University Press Into The Library, Richard Clement

Richard W. Clement

The original role of a press in a research university was to publish and disseminate the research and scholarship of the faculty. The university was willing to undertake a significant level of subsidy because the press was seen as fulfilling a central part of the mission of a research university. In the second half of the twentieth century, many faculty began to be concerned that to publish with one’s own university’s press might be considered a conflict of interest. An unforeseen consequence of this was that a university press was no longer seen as fulfilling a university’s specific mission to …
