Can Open Access Save Us?, Mark Y. Herring Dec 2010

Can Open Access Save Us?, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Just about every time I open a journal or read a blog online, I see something about e-books saving newspapers and magazines. Both magazines and newspapers–and really all scholalry communication–are going the way of all flesh, we’re told, but e-book reading may provide a stay of execution, however short that may be. It got me to thinking if there might be something else that would provide a similarDies Irae proroguement for scholarly communication in general. That’s when it occurred to me it could well be open access (OA), or at least as I envision it here.

Amazon.com’s announcement in July 2010 that eBooks out sold print books for the previous three months indicates that eBooks are here to stay. What effect will this have on teaching and learning? Will ease of access and portability facilitate cheating and plagiarism? How will eBooks and eReaders work in an urban academic environment? Are eReaders and eBooks the new digital divide?

Faculty from the Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College will share their experience with Sony eReaders and downloadable eBooks via OverDrive. Following this presentation there will be a guided discussion on eReader and eBook issues, such as:

Brave New World: Redesigning Lehman College Library’S Website, Stefanie Havelka, David Stevens

Publications and Research

Since today’s students are digital natives, they naturally expect more from an academic library website. Well-designed websites, virtual games, social networking as well as search engines are an integral part of their daily digital lives. Consequently, challenges faced during redesign of a library’s website are two-fold:

  • Concepts of web usability must be applied. The website needs to be well organized and present its information and content in a user-friendly manner.
  • The website needs to be visually appealing since it serves both as the virtual extension of the physical library, as well as a significant outreach tool promoting the Library’s and …

Bam! Pow! Graphic Novels Fight Stereotypes In Academic Libraries: Supporting, Collecting, Promoting, Beth Jane Toren

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

This study examines the launch of a graphic novel collection in an academic library and presents a study analyzing the increase of titles in Association of Research Libraries with the subject heading “Graphic Novels” between fall 2008 and fall 2009. Statistics show a 40% increase, averaging 62 additional titles, during a year of global financial crisis. Exploring the prejudice against comics lingering in more traditional corners of academia, this paper encourages librarians to counter stereotypes and therefore bring more people, including other librarians, to view graphic novels as literature. This study includes recommended practices for supporting, collecting, and promoting these …

Information Portals: The Next Generation Catalog, Deeann Allison Dec 2010

Information Portals: The Next Generation Catalog, Deeann Allison

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Libraries today face an increasing challenge: to provide relevant information to diverse populations with differing needs, while competing with Web search engines like Google. In 2009 the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Libraries joined with other libraries and Innovative Interfaces as development partners to design a new type of discovery tool. Information portals as a concept best supports the research and instructional needs of our communities by organizing and presenting information that incorporates licensed databases, text, multimedia, and other relevant sources. The discovery tool under examination by UNL, Encore, integrates searches of the catalog, locally created full-text and image sources, and …

A Model Of The Information Seeking And Decision Making Of Online Coin Buyers, Donald O. Case Dec 2010

A Model Of The Information Seeking And Decision Making Of Online Coin Buyers, Donald O. Case

Information Science Faculty Publications

Introduction. The Everyday Life Information Seeking approach suggests that much information behaviour takes place in non-work settings, for example in the pursuit of leisure activities such as hobbies. This study focuses on a community of collectors to examine how they gather information to decide whether to purchase an item for their collection when the target item has an ambiguous or deficient description.

Method. Manual scanning of eBay and other online discussion board for coin buyers led to 187 postings indicating an attempt to reach a purchase decision, or to authenticate a purchased coin, through solicitation or posting of advice.

First Time On The Hill: My Big Adventure As A Member Of The Wla Legislative Team, Julie Miller

Scholarship and Professional Work

Last spring, WLA President Tim Mallory sent out an urgent message to WLA members: State Librarian Jan Walsh and WLA Federal Relations Co-coordinator Rand Simmons, both stalwart advocates for Washington libraries at the annual legislative days, were unable to attend Library Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. on June 29. Team Washington, the WLA advocacy team, needed volunteers to go on visits to Washington's legislators on Capitol Hill. I was going to ALA, paying my own way due to the state budget freeze for public employees, and - as luck would have it - had no committee meetings or essential programs …

Are We Recording? The Evolution Of A Law Library Radio Show, Marcia L. Dority Baker

Marvin and Virginia Schmid Law Library

The advent of technology has infinitely changed how humans exchange information. There are numerous ways to communicate with people: a phone call, by e-mail, at professional conferences, through networking opportunities, and in publications of all types. Another opportunity is via radio-not the old fashioned AM/FM kind, but online radio shows or podcasts.

Blog Talk Radio is a web-based, live radio internet service that includes free or basic services for individual users; premium levels of service and business accounts are available for companies. There are two types of individual accounts---one for listeners and one for hosts. Users can listen to shows …
