OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the characteristics of mHealth interventions and their efficacy on pain outcomes in older adults with musculoskeletal pain.

METHODS: With the assistance of a medical librarian, keywords and subject headings were generated, including …

Local libraries provide free resources and materials as well as items in special collections that …

Chapter 5: What Books Are In Your Card Catalog?, Julie A. Drewry

A Guide to Library Careers: Choosing Your Path

[First paragraph]

Author’s note: In 1970, Richard Nelson Bolles self-published a book about searching for a job entitled, What Color is Your Parachute? Bolles’ seminal work on job searching was so well received that it has been updated and republished annually since 1975 (Wikipedia, 2022). The title of this chapter, What Books are in Your Card Catalog?, is an homage to that work. Unless you are over the age of 40, the card catalog may not seem relevant due to the replacement of most card catalogs with the online catalog. However, the goal of the card catalog was to enable …

F Is For Feminism: Mainstreaming Feminist Leadership In Academic Libraries, Shana Higgins Jan 2023

F Is For Feminism: Mainstreaming Feminist Leadership In Academic Libraries, Shana Higgins

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

Gender and whiteness structure library work in ways that continue to lack sustained critical attention, particularly in the research literature on library leadership and management. In 2020 just over 83% of librarians identified as women and as white, non-Hispanic. And 78.6% of library technicians and assistants identified as white, non-Hispanic. These demographics make librarians a slightly less diverse workforce than other professionals in educational jobs. Despite being a female-intensive and overwhelmingly white profession, the scholarship on leadership and management published in mainstream library and information science journals (LIS) rarely employs explicitly feminist frameworks or perspectives. By using critical feminist analyses …

Library Curriculum As Epistemic Justice: Decolonizing Library Instruction Programs, Heather Campbell, Dan Sich

Western Libraries Publications

Information literacy scholars and leaders are calling for the decolonization of library instruction, knowing that our work helps to maintain colonial systems. While there is no checklist or road map to program decolonization, academic libraries and instruction teams must start the work anyway. This article shares the story of curriculum decolonization at Western Libraries, so far, including the decolonization ‘cycle’ we followed and our resulting six learning outcomes. Grounded in epistemic justice, our new curriculum prioritizes living beings over information, and uses a broad, inclusive definition of knowledge throughout. Librarians at Western University acknowledge that the first step in decolonization …

Reading Critically From The Archives: James Merrill Linn’S Diary As A Gateway To The Past, Carrie M. Pirmann, Courtney Paddick

Faculty Contributions to Books

Archival research and reading from the archives have long been embraced as a scholarly research practice in humanities disciplines. However, college and university libraries often have archival collections tucked away that can facilitate learning when used in thoughtfully crafted assignments. In this chapter, we discuss how we used Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and archival materials to provide students with an opportunity to engage in a close and critical reading of excerpts from the …

Gettysburg’s Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship began in 2016, and Bucknell’s Digital Scholarship Summer Research Fellowship in 2017. While academic libraries have emerged as leaders on college campuses for digital humanities (DH) services, the programs at Gettysburg and Bucknell are distinctive in their structured curricula, a focus on independent student research, and the development of a local community of practice. Looking Back: Woman's Library Club In Kentucky, Reinette F. Jones

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

The Woman’s Library Club Movement arrived in Kentucky around 1896. It was not a true movement, but rather a period when dissociated groups named Woman’s Library Club were established throughout the United States. There was not a national office or state offices. Each club functioned independently. The state of Kentucky was a minor player in the Woman’s Library Club Movement. Had it not been for the Paducah newspaper articles, the state as whole may have been overlooked.

Crafting The Future Of Chat Reference: Assessing For Quality In Cooperative Chat Reference, Elise Ferer, Jennifer Lege Matsuura

Library Scholarship

Online reference allows libraries to join cooperatives in which other librarians provide chat reference when local librarians are not available. As the future brings more cross institutional collaboration, how do we know that cooperative chat is effective for our patrons? Librarians developed a rubric to assess chat transcripts for the quality of services provided by librarians outside their institution. Presenters will share the results of their assessment, the steps they took to develop the assessment questions, the rubric used, the assessment process, and lessons learned. Attendees will develop an understanding of how to assess reference for quality to improve services.
