Transitioning From Marketing-Oriented Design To User-Oriented Design: A Case Study, Shari Laster, Tammy Stitz, Frank J. Bove, Casey Wise

Frank J. Bove

The transition to a new architecture and design for an academic library Web site does not always proceed smoothly. This case study describes the experiences of a library at a large research university that hired an outside Web development contractor to create a new architecture and design for the university’s Web site using dotCMS, an open source content management system. The library participated in the design and development process along with other campus units. Because the university-wide process focused on marketing the university to prospective students, parents, and donors, the fact-finding process that the contractor used for the library’s site …

Reconceptualizing Academic Libraries And Archives In The Digital Age, Michael J. Paulus Jr. Dec 2010

Reconceptualizing Academic Libraries And Archives In The Digital Age, Michael J. Paulus Jr.

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

This paper considers the concept of “the archive” in the digital age and the situation of libraries and archives within the lifecycle of information. After discussing the changing nature of books, records, scholarly communication, and the concept of “the archive,” this paper merges book and record lifecycle models into a new archival cycle. To avail themselves of the opportunities and to confront the challenges presented by digital materials, librarians and archivists are beginning to assume new roles and reposition themselves within this archival cycle. As professional trajectories converge, preservation can be linked with creation or distribution and it becomes easier …

Worldcat Quality: An Oclc Report, Karen S. Calhoun, Glenn Patton Dec 2010

Worldcat Quality: An Oclc Report, Karen S. Calhoun, Glenn Patton

Karen S Calhoun

This report describes OCLC's steps to make it easier to find items in WorldCat and get them from OCLC member libraries. It begins with a review of WorldCat's unprecedented growth since 2008--growth which has challenged OCLC's programs for managing duplicate entries and library location (holdings) information. OCLC's 2010 implementation of new duplication detection and resolution (DDR) software helped; however, WorldCat quality needs to be further strengthened. The authors describe a special project—GLIMIR—and other WorldCat quality improvement projects intended to improve the clustering of WorldCat records and holdings for the same work, thus reducing the complexity of search result displays and …

"Inks In The Islamic Manuscripts Of Northern Nigeria - Old Recipes, Modern Analysis And Medicine", Michaelle Biddle Dec 2010

"Inks In The Islamic Manuscripts Of Northern Nigeria - Old Recipes, Modern Analysis And Medicine", Michaelle Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

This study is concerned with what specific materials are used in fabricating the inks used in the surviving, largely undated Northern Nigerian manuscripts written in Arabic script. These manuscripts belong to the West African tradition of Islamic culture and scholarship, of which Timbuktu, Mali, was a key center. The manuscripts themselves, and 4500 km of road travel throughout Northern Nigeria, suggest a local tradition of dye, ink and pigment fabrication rather than one derived from the Mediterranean and the Islamic heartlands. Technical materials analysis, recipes from ethno-cultural studies, and replicative experiments revealed a reliance on local plants and materials. Botanical …

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon Dec 2010

Good Enough: The New Face Of Reference, Doug Way, Colleen Lyon

Doug Way

College students today flock to Wikipedia in droves, while at the same time academic libraries continue to pour time and money into print reference collections that are rarely used and take huge amounts of our libraries’ limited space. While libraries have responded to space and access concerns by turning to electronic books, title-by-title selection is a time-consuming affair for a collection that sees low use. In this paper we examine the factors that have led to the point where libraries need to reexamine how they collect and provide access to reference sources. Through a content analysis of reference transcripts and …

Competing Perspectives: Communicating The Value Of School Librarians And Ict Skills To School Principals/Administrators, Rick A. Stoddart

Rick A Stoddart

This paper will examine how LIS schools prepare pre-service librarians to communicate with school principal/administrators the importance and implementation of Information & Communication-Technology (ICT) standards. A recent state-wide study has shown that many school principals/ administrators derive their understanding as to the role of school libraries/ librarians from three main sources: personal experience (84.7%), on-the-job experience (81.3%), and informal communication with school librarians (80.7%).1 Obviously, school librarian interaction with principals/administrators has large impact on an administrator’s viewpoint on school libraries’/librarians’ educational efficacy. Unfortunately, those principals/administrators who relied on on-the-job experience as a knowledge base tended to assess their school or …
