Domestic Monopoly, Quotas & Contestable Rents, William Rieber

William Rieber

In this article, a specific example is given to illustrate that rent seeking can raise welfare under full seeking in general equilibrium: an import quota is levied in the presence of domestic monopoly in the import competing industry. An import quota is considered instead of an import tariff since a tariff confers no market power on the local monopolist. Who Benefits From State And Local Economic Development Policies?, Timothy Bartik

He also shows that the earnings gains to disadvantaged groups outweigh the resulting increased real estate values for property owners, and concludes by saying that regional competition for jobs may actually be a benefit for the nation as a whole.

William Rieber

The purpose of this paper is primarily to offer an economic perception of the loss involving the wrongful death of children. Unfortunately, little or no attention thus far has been directed to the question of what ought to be the basis of compensation, and many of the sums awarded by courts do not bear any relation to the value of the child that is lost.
