Prediction Of Dopant Ionization Energies In Silicon: The Importance Of Strain, A. Rockett, Duane D. Johnson, S. V. Khare, B. R. Tuttle

Based on a hydrogenic state and strain changes upon defect charging, we propose a simple, parameter-free model that agrees well with the observed group III and V monovalent-impurity ionization energies in Si, revealing the importance of such strain effects. Changes in lattice strain upon defect charging are obtained via superposition and elasticity theory using atomic relaxations from density functional theory.

Ni/Fe/Co/Cu(100) films were epitaxially grown and investigated by photoemission electron microscopy. The magnetic correlation of the Ni and Co films was investigated by element-specific domain images. We found that the Ni magnetization exhibits a continuous rotation in the spin reorientation transition (SRT) region and that the Ni SRT thickness oscillates with the Fe film thickness.

Recently we solved, via discrete numerical grids, the Ramakrishna-Yossouff density-functional theory equations for the freezing transition and obtained an intricate phase diagram of hard-sphere mixtures. Even though such methods provide more variational freedom than basis-set methods, we found that the thermodynamic quantities were sensitive to the spacing of numerical grids employed and observed numerically induced false minima. Dasgupta and Valls have commented that these false minima were due to our use of k-space methods and, hence, their early works based on a fully r-space approach are qualitatively correct, despite also being sensitive to the mesh granularity. Here, we clarify the …

Effect Of Multi-Mode Vibration On Signature Estimation Using A Laser Vibration Sensor, Ngoya Pepela Mar 2003

Effect Of Multi-Mode Vibration On Signature Estimation Using A Laser Vibration Sensor, Ngoya Pepela

Theses and Dissertations

A laser vibration sensor (LVS) can be used to determine the vibrational spectrum of targets such as vehicles using heterodyne laser Doppler velocimetry. The vibrational spectra of exterior skin of vehicles are known to have characteristic resonances due to the physical structure driven by motor gears and other moving parts. Each particular class of vehicle has a unique vibrational spectrum. This research shows how a body vibrating in higher order modes has the opportunity to eliminate spectral content of the target's vibrational spectrum while using an LVS to perform spectrum estimation. This is due to roughly equal amounts of laser …

Predicted Hcp Ag-Al Metastable Phase Diagram, Equilibrium Ground States, And Precipitate Structure, Nikolai A. Zarkevich, Duane D. Johnson Feb 2003

Predicted Hcp Ag-Al Metastable Phase Diagram, Equilibrium Ground States, And Precipitate Structure, Nikolai A. Zarkevich, Duane D. Johnson

Nikolai A. Zarkevich

Formation energies of a number of hcp-based Ag-Al structures are obtained from ab initio electronic-structure calculations and used within a cluster expansion approach to construct an effective alloy Hamiltonian. Formation energies are found to be inherently asymmetric versus composition, providing an incipient tendency for precipitation in Al-rich alloy. Both ground-state search and Monte Carlo simulations based on the cluster expansion are used to determine the metastable hcp Ag-Al phase diagram. A new equilibrium hcp AgAl ground state is predicted and zero-energy domain boundary defects are found. From thermodynamic results, we discuss the precipitate structure and composition in Al-rich Al-Ag alloys …

Ferroelectric-Field-Induced Tuning Of Magnetism In The Colossal Magnetoresistive Oxide La1Àxsrxmno3, X. Hong, A. Posadas, A. Lin, C. H. Ahn Jan 2003

Ferroelectric-Field-Induced Tuning Of Magnetism In The Colossal Magnetoresistive Oxide La1Àxsrxmno3, X. Hong, A. Posadas, A. Lin, C. H. Ahn

Xia Hong Publications

A ferroelectric field effect approach is presented for modulating magnetism in the colossal magnetoresistive oxide La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO). The ferromagnetic Curie temperature of ultrathin LSMO films was shifted by 35 K reversibly using the polarization field of the ferroelectric oxide Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 in a field effect structure. This shift was also observed in magnetoresistance measurements, with the maximum magnetoresistance ratio at 6 T increasing from 64% to 77%. This model system approach does not introduce substitutional disorder or structural distortion, demonstrating that regulating the carrier concentration alone changes the magnetic phase transition …

Ferroelectricity In Free Niobium Clusters, Ramiro Moro, Xiaoshan Xu, Shuangye Yin, Walt A. De Heer Jan 2003

Ferroelectricity In Free Niobium Clusters, Ramiro Moro, Xiaoshan Xu, Shuangye Yin, Walt A. De Heer

Xiaoshan Xu Papers

Electric deflections of gas-phase, cryogenically cooled, neutral niobium clusters [NbN; number of atoms (N) = 2 to 150, temperature (T) = 20 to 300 kelvin], measured in molecular beams, show that cold clusters may attain an anomalous component with very large electric dipole moments. In contrast, room-temperature measurements show normal metallic polarizabilities. Characteristic energies kBTG(N) [Boltzmann constant kB times a transition temperature TG(N)] are identified, below which the ferroelectric-like state develops. Generally, TG decreases [110 > TG(N) > 10K] as …

Study Of A Growth Instability Of Γ-In[Sub 2]Se[Sub 3], C. Amory, J. C. Bernede, S. Marsillac

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin film are deposited for various substrate temperatures in the range of 523–673 K. This study shows that at 573 and 673 K the thin films are well crystallized with grains aligned along the c axis. Between these temperatures, a domain of instability appears where the γ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3] thin films have a randomly orientation and the c-lattice parameter increases. The presence of the metastable phase κ-In[sub 2]Se[sub 3], during the growth, can explain the existence of this domain of instability. The insertion of Zn during the preparation process allows us to stabilize the phase κ at …

Micro Thermoelectric Cooler Fabrication: Growth And Characterization Of Patterned Sb2te3 And Bi2te3 Films ., Luciana Da Silva, M. Kaviany, A. Dehennis, Jeffrey Dyck

Jeffrey Dyck

A column-type micro thermoelectric cooler is being fabricated using p-type Sb2Te3 and n-type Bi2Te3 films (approximately 4 μm thick). The films are grown by thermal co-evaporation and patterned on Cr/Au/Ti/Pt (hot) connectors, which are deposited onto a silicon dioxide coated wafer. The column height is limited by control of the Te deposition rate. Although a high substrate temperature during thermoelectric film deposition is desired, it has been limited by the degradation of the photoresist used for patterning. The measured Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity of the thermoelectric films are reported, and preliminary results show that excess tellurium increases the Seebeck …

Titanium-doped single crystals (cTi = 0 to 2×1020 atoms cm-3) were prepared from the elements Sb, Ti, and Te of 5N purity by a modified Bridgman method. The obtained crystals were characterized by measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity in the temperature range of 5-300 K. It was observed that with an increasing Ti content in the samples the electrical resistance, the Hall coefficient and the Seebeck coefficient increase. This means that the incorporation of Ti atoms into the Sb2Te3 crystal structure results in a decrease in the concentration of …
