Classification Of Pixel Tracks To Improve Track Reconstruction From Proton-Proton Collisions, Kebur Fantahun, Jobin Joseph, Halle Purdom, Nibhrat Lohia

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, machine learning techniques are used to reconstruct particle collision pathways. CERN (Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire) uses a massive underground particle collider, called the Large Hadron Collider or LHC, to produce particle collisions at extremely high speeds. There are several layers of detectors in the collider that track the pathways of particles as they collide. The data produced from collisions contains an extraneous amount of background noise, i.e., decays from known particle collisions produce fake signal. Particularly, in the first layer of the detector, the pixel tracker, there is an overwhelming amount of background noise that …

Search For Resonant Pair Production Of Higgs Bosons In The Four B-Quark Final State With The Atlas Detector, Dale Abbott Oct 2021

Search For Resonant Pair Production Of Higgs Bosons In The Four B-Quark Final State With The Atlas Detector, Dale Abbott

Doctoral Dissertations

A search for heavy resonances decaying to Higgs boson pairs in the $b\overline{b}b\overline{b}$ final state with 139 $fb^{-1}$ of LHC proton-proton (pp) collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV obtained by the ATLAS detector during the 2015-2018 time period. Two benchmark signals are studied, both of which decay into a Higgs boson pair: a spin-2 Kaluza-Klein Graviton and a scalar resonance. This thesis studies high transverse momentum (boosted) resonances, which range from 900-5000 GeV. No statistically significant excesses are observed and the results are found to be compatible with the Standard Model. Upper limits are set on the production …

Search For Displaced Hadronic Vertices In The Atlas Inner Detector And Muon Spectrometer In P-P Collisions At √S = 13 Tev At The Lhc, Margaret S. Lutz Mar 2020

Search For Displaced Hadronic Vertices In The Atlas Inner Detector And Muon Spectrometer In P-P Collisions At √S = 13 Tev At The Lhc, Margaret S. Lutz

Doctoral Dissertations

A search is performed for long-lived neutral particles using 33 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the LHC and collected by the ATLAS detector during 2016. This search focuses on the topology in which pairs of displaced hadronic jets are produced, with one in the inner detector and the other in the muon spectrometer. Special techniques are used to reconstruct the displaced decays. One event is found passing the full signal selection, which is consistent with the back- ground estimation. Limits are set at a 95% upper confidence level on the BR × σ for a SM …

Search For Resonant Double Higgs Production With Bbzz Decays In The Bbℓℓνν Final State In Pp Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, Rami Kamalieddin Jul 2019

Search For Resonant Double Higgs Production With Bbzz Decays In The Bbℓℓνν Final State In Pp Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, Rami Kamalieddin

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, most of the quantum mechanical properties that describe the long-awaited Higgs boson have been measured. Due to the outstanding work of the LHC, over a hundred of fb−1 of proton collisions data have been delivered to both experiments. Finally, it became sensible for analyses teams to start working with a very low cross section processes involving the Higgs boson, e.g., a recent success in observing ttH and VHbb processes. One of the main remaining untouched topics is a double Higgs boson production. However, an …

Jet-Hadron Correlations Relative To The Event Plane Pb--Pb Collisions At The Lhc In Alice, Joel Anthony Mazer May 2017

Jet-Hadron Correlations Relative To The Event Plane Pb--Pb Collisions At The Lhc In Alice, Joel Anthony Mazer

Doctoral Dissertations

In relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a hot, dense and strongly interacting medium known as the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is produced. Quarks and gluons from incoming nuclei collide to produce partons at high momenta early in the collisions. By fragmenting into collimated sprays of hadrons, these partons form 'jets'. Within the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD), jet production is well understood in pp collisions. We can use jets measured in pp interactions as a baseline reference for comparing to heavy ion collision systems to detect and study jet quenching. The jet quenching mechanism …

The Cms Pixel Luminosity Telescope Browser Interface, Mark Miller Foerster May 2015

The Cms Pixel Luminosity Telescope Browser Interface, Mark Miller Foerster

Masters Theses

The search for and detailed study of new particles and forces with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN is fundamentally dependent on the precise measurement of the rate at which proton-proton collisions produce any particles, the so-called luminosity. For the discovery of the Higgs candidate in 2012 the relative precision of this quantity was about 2.5%. To be able to observe deviations from Standard Model predictions for decay rates of this particle and others which can hint to new phenomena the targeted luminosity uncertainty is about 1%. Therefore, a new device, the …

Investigation And Optimization Of A New Compact Superconducting Cavity For Deflecting And Crabbing Applications, Subashini Uddika De Silva Jul 2014

Investigation And Optimization Of A New Compact Superconducting Cavity For Deflecting And Crabbing Applications, Subashini Uddika De Silva

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Deflecting and crabbing structures have many applications in current accelerator systems. The primary use of a deflecting cavity is to separate a single beam into multiple beams. A crabbing cavity enables the head-on collision at the interaction point in particle colliders in order to increase the luminosity. The early uses of the deflecting structures have been in the early 1960s: these structures were disk loaded structures operating at room temperature. The crabbing structure which was installed at the NEK electron-positron collider was the first and only operational superconducting cavity of that kind. The most common design of superconducting deflecting and …

Searches For Neutral Higgs Bosons In Quark-Antiquark Tau-Antitau Final States Using The Opal Detector At Lep, James Andrew Hocker '91 Dec 2000

Searches For Neutral Higgs Bosons In Quark-Antiquark Tau-Antitau Final States Using The Opal Detector At Lep, James Andrew Hocker '91

Doctoral Dissertations

Searches for neutral Higgs bosons have been performed with the OPAL detector at LEP. Approximately 170 /pb of e+e- collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 189 GeV have been used to search for the SM process e+e- to HZ as well as for the processes e+e- to hZ and e+e- to hA which occur in extended Higgs theories. The searches are sensitive to final states containing quarks and tau leptons, for which an artificial neural network for the identification of tau leptons was designed. The results have been combined with OPAL searches for other final states to obtain a …
