How did life arise from the prebiotic conditions of the early earth? This problem has vexed scientists for decades with no consensus on its solution. Significant spontaneous formation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids in the aqueous phase appears to be improbable due to thermodynamic constraints. It has been proposed that mineral surfaces could have served as a catalyst for the initial formation of biopolymers. However, the feasibility of this mechanism has not been thoroughly studied. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has and is continuing to discover a multitude of potentially habitable planet candidates. As more planets are detected and confirmed, it becomes increasingly important to strategically search for signs of habitability with which to differentiate and prioritize them for further observation, in particular with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). To facilitate this, I have created a method for prioritizing TESS planet candidates based on parameters derived from their light curves and have applied the method to the TESS Candidate Target List (CTL). Carbonaceous chondritic meteorites are considered some of the most primitive surviving materials from the formation of our solar system. Thus, these objects can provide information about planet formation through their physical properties (such as structure, composition, and morphology) which can be characterized using microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. In this work, the analytical methods of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscopy are applied to determine the mineralogical, topographical, and elemental compositions of two carbonaceous chondritic fragments: Moss and Murray. A uniform dispersion of reactants is necessary to achieve a complete reaction involving multi-components, especially for the crosslinking of rigid high-performance materials. In these reactions, miscibility is crucial for curing efficiency. This miscibility is typically enhanced by adding a third component, a plasticizer. For the reaction of the highly crystalline crosslinking agent hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) with a strongly hydrogen-bonded phenol formaldehyde resin, furfural has been traditionally used as the plasticizer. However, the reason for its effectiveness is not clear. High pressure physics involves placing various substances under high pressure and observing changes in that substance. In this experiment this high amount of pressure is induced using a diamond anvil cell. A diamond anvil cell uses a metal gasket to hold the sample between two diamonds, which will press on the sample to reach high pressures. High pressures are reached with a moderate amount of force by exerting that force over a small area. Diamonds are used for the compression because of their hardness and ability to resist compression.
