Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars …

The average stellar mass (M*) of high-mass galaxies (log M*/M > 11.5) is expected to grow by ∼30% since z ~ 1, largely through ongoing mergers that are also invoked to explain the observed increase in galaxy sizes. Direct evidence for the corresponding growth in stellar mass has been elusive, however, in part because the volumes sampled by previous redshift surveys have been too small to yield reliable statistics. In this work, we make use of the Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog (S82-MGC) to build a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies log M*/M⊙ …

The source of the gravitational-wave (GW) signal GW170817, very likely a binary neutron star merger, was also observed electromagnetically, providing the first multi-messenger observations of this type. The two-week-long electromagnetic (EM) counterpart had a signature indicative of an r-process-induced optical transient known as a kilonova. This Letter examines how the mass of the dynamical ejecta can be estimated without a direct electromagnetic observation of the kilonova, using GW measurements and a phenomenological model calibrated to numerical simulations of mergers with dynamical ejecta. Specifically, we apply the model to the binary masses inferred from the GW measurements, and use the resulting …

On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB 170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations. The optical source was associated with the early-type galaxy NGC 4993 at a distance of just ∼40 Mpc, consistent with the gravitational-wave measurement, and the merger was localized to be at a projected distance of ∼2 kpc away from the galaxy's center. We use this minimal set of facts and the mass posteriors of the two neutron stars to derive the first constraints on the progenitor of GW170817 at the …

Background: The insufficient understanding of unintended biological impacts from nanomaterials (NMs) represents a serious impediment to their use for scientific, technological, and medical applications. While previous studies have focused on understanding nanotoxicity effects mostly resulting from cellular internalization, recent work indicates that NMs may interfere with transmembrane transport mechanisms, hence enabling contributions to nanotoxicity by affecting key biological activities dependent on transmembrane transport. In this line of inquiry, we investigated the effects of charged nanoparticles (NPs) on the transport properties of lysenin, a pore-forming toxin that shares fundamental features with ion channels such as regulation and high transport rate.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many aspects of human behavior seem to be well-described by formulas of quantum physics. In this paper, we explain this phenomenon by showing that the corresponding quantum-looking formulas can be derived from the general ideas of scale invariance, fuzziness, and copulas. We also use these ideas to derive a general family of formulas that include non-quantum and quantum probabilities as particular cases -- formulas that may be more adequate for describing human behavior than purely non-quantum or purely quantum ones.

Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie Dec 2017

Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm for video denoising that exploits temporal and spatial redundancy. The proposed method is based on non-local means (NLM). NLM methods have been applied successfully in various image denoising applications. In the single-frame NLM method, each output pixel is formed as a weighted sum of the center pixels of neighboring patches, within a given search window.

The weights are based on the patch intensity vector distances. The process requires computing vector distances for all of the patches in the search window. Direct extension of this method from 2D to 3D, for video …

We search for the JPC=0−− and 1+− light tetraquark states with masses up to 2.46 GeV/c2 in Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) decays with data samples of (102±2) million and (158±4) million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied production modes, and 90% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their branching fractions in Υ(1S)and Υ(2S) decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) decays into final states with f1(1285) are measured to be B(Υ(1S)→f1(1285)+anything)=(46±28(stat)±13(syst))×10−4 and B(Υ(2S)→f1(1285)+anything)=(22±15(stat)±6.3(syst))×10−4. The measured χb2→J/ψ+anything branching fraction is measured to be (1.50±0.34(stat)±0.22(syst))×10−3, and 90% …

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen: 6p-1s And 6p-2s Systems, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Chandra M. Adhikari

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The collisional shift of a transition constitutes an important systematic effect in highprecision spectroscopy. Accurate values for van der Waals interaction coefficients are required in order to evaluate the distance-dependent frequency shift. We here consider the interaction of excited hydrogen 6P atoms with metastable atoms (in the 2S state), in order to explore the influence of quasi-degenerate 2P and 6S states on the dipole-dipole interaction. The motivation for the calculation is given by planned high-precision measurements of the transition. Due to the presence of quasi-degenerate levels, one can use the non-retarded approximation for the interaction terms over wide distance ranges.

We report spatially resolved perpendicular and parallel, to the magnetic field, ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements in an expanding argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs, obtained through laser induced fluorescence (LIF), show an ion beam with v ≈ 8000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of metastable quenching of the beam ions. The parallel ion beam velocity slows in agreement with expectations for the measured parallel electric field. The perpendicular IVDFs show an …

We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the first Advanced LIGO observing run. This search investigates the low frequency range of Advanced LIGO data, between 20 and 100 Hz, much of which was not explored in initial LIGO. The search was made possible by the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population, corresponding to a sensitivity depth of 48.7 …

Stabilization Of Hypoxia Inducible Factor By Cobalt Chloride Can Alter Renal Epithelial Transport, Subhra Nag, Andrew Resnick

Physics Faculty Publications

© 2017 The Authors. Given the importance of the transcriptional regulator hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) for adaptive hypoxia responses, we examined the effect of stabilized HIF-1α on renal epithelial permeability and directed sodium transport. This study was motivated by histological analysis of cystic kidneys showing increased expression levels of HIF-1α and HIF-2α. We hypothesize that compression induced localized ischemia-hypoxia of normal epithelia near a cyst leads to local stabilization of HIF-1α, leading to altered transepithelial transport that encourages cyst expansion. We found that stabilized HIF-1α alters both transcellular and paracellular transport through renal epithelial monolayers in a manner consistent with secretory …

On 2017 June 8 at 02:01:16.49 UTC, a gravitational-wave (GW) signal from the merger of two stellar-mass blackholes was observed by the two Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory detectors with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13. This system is the lightest black hole binary so far observed, with component masses of 12+7 -2M⊙+2-2M⊙ (90% credible intervals). These lie in the range of measured black hole masses in low-mass X-ray binaries, thus allowing us to compare black holes detected through GWs with electromagnetic observations. The source's luminosity distance is 340+140 -140 corresponding to redshift -0.07 …

A nematic topological superconductor has an order parameter symmetry, which spontaneously breaks the crystalline symmetry in its superconducting state. This state can be observed, for example, by thermodynamic or upper critical field experiments in which a magnetic field is rotated with respect to the crystalline axes. The corresponding physical quantity then directly reflects the symmetry of the order parameter. We present a study on the superconducting upper critical field of the Nb-doped topological insulator NbxBi2Se3 for various magnetic field orientations parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane of the Bi2Se3 layers. Generalized Ellipsometry On Complex Nanostructures And Low-Symmetry Materials, Alyssa Mock

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, complex anisotropic materials are investigated and characterized by generalized ellipsometry. In recent years, anisotropic materials have gained considerable interest for novel applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices, mostly due to unique properties that originate from reduced crystal symmetry. Examples include white solid-state lighting devices which have become ubiquitous just recently, and the emergence of high-power, high-voltage electronic transistors and switches in all-electric vehicles. The incorporation of single crystalline material with low crystal symmetry into novel device structures requires reconsideration of existing optical characterization approaches. Here, the generalized ellipsometry concept is extended to include applications for materials with …

Angle-Resolved Observation Of X-Ray Second Harmonic Generation In Diamond, Björn Senfftleben Dec 2017

Angle-Resolved Observation Of X-Ray Second Harmonic Generation In Diamond, Björn Senfftleben

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis reports angularly-resolved observation of X-ray second harmonic generation (XSHG) in diamond at several phase-matching geometries. The XSHG signal was produced by ultra-short, highly intense X-ray pulses with a photon energy of 9.831 keV generated by a free-electron laser. In some geometries for high pulse energies more than 10 second harmonic photons per pulse were generated.

Different phase-matched geometries were used for XSHG to investigate the angular dependence of the efficiency of the process. Furthermore, for each phase-matching condition, the quadratic dependence for second harmonic generation at each geometry was verified and the crystal rocking curves were measured. The …

Design And Construction Of A High-Current Femtosecond Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction Setup, Omid Zandi

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We designed and constructed a state-of-the-art high current ultrafast gas electron diffraction experimental setup, which resolved two main challenges that constraint temporal resolution in previous setups. These aforementioned bottlenecks were: the space charge effect due to the Coulomb expansion, and the velocity mismatch between the sub-relativistic electrons (probe) and the exciting laser pulse (pump). In our setup, the problem of space charge effect was ameliorated by compressing 90 keV photo-emitted electron pulses using a radio-frequency electric field. The compression allowed us to increase the beam current by almost two orders of magnitude higher than previously reported. We developed a laser-activated …

A Measurement Of The Wγ Cross Section At √S = 8 Tev In Pp Collisions With The Cms Detector, Ekaterina Avdeeva

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A measurement of cross section of the Wγ → lνγ production in proton-proton collisions using 19.6 fb − 1 of LHC data collected by CMS detector at the center- √ of-mass collision energy of s = 8 TeV is reported. The W bosons are identified in their electron and muon decay modes. The process of Wγ production in the Standard Model (SM) involves a pure gauge boson coupling, a WWγ vertex, which allows one to test the electroweak sector of the SM in a unique way not achievable by studies of other processes. In addition to the total cross section, …

Arrow Of Time For Continuous Quantum Measurement, Justin Dressel, Areeya Chantasri, Andrew N. Jordan, Alexander N. Korotkov

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We investigate the statistical arrow of time for a quantum system being monitored by a sequence of measurements. For a continuous qubit measurement example, we demonstrate that time-reversed evolution is always physically possible, provided that the measurement record is also negated. Despite this restoration of dynamical reversibility, a statistical arrow of time emerges, and may be quantified by the log-likelihood difference between forward and backward propagation hypotheses. We then show that such reversibility is a universal feature of nonprojective measurements, with forward or backward Janus measurement sequences that are time-reversed inverses of each other.

Speckle Effects In Target-In-The-Loop Laser Beam Projection Systems, Mikhail Vorontsov Dec 2017

Speckle Effects In Target-In-The-Loop Laser Beam Projection Systems, Mikhail Vorontsov

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

In target-in-the-loop laser beam projection scenarios typical of remote sensing, directed energy, and adaptive optics applications, a transmitted laser beam propagates through an optically inhomogeneous medium toward a target, scatters off the target’s rough surface, and returns back to the transceiver plane. Coherent beam scattering off the randomly rough surface results in strong speckle modulation in the transceiver plane. This speckle modulation has been a long-standing challenge that limits performance of remote sensing, active imaging, and adaptive optics techniques. Using physics-based models of laser beam scattering off a randomly rough surface, we show that received speckle-field spatial and temporal characteristics …

Confined Photonic Mode Propagation Observed In Photoemission Electron Microscopy, Theodore Stenmark, Robert Campbell Word, Rolf Konenkamp

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) we present a comparative analysis of the wavelength dependence of propagating fields in a simple optical slab waveguide and a thin film photonic crystal W1-type waveguide. We utilize an interferometric imaging approach for light in the near-ultraviolet regime where a 2-photon process is required to produce photoelectron emission. The typical spatial resolution in these experiments is < 30 nm. Electromagnetic theory and finite element simulations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. Our results indicate that multiphoton PEEM is a useful sub-wavelength characterization technique in thin film optics.

The government of North Korea has declared high-altitude EMP-capability to be a “strategic goal” and has also threatened an atmospheric test of a hydrogen bomb. Atmospheric nuclear tests have the potential to cripple satellites and the undersea cable networks critical to communication, and navigation necessary for trans-Pacific trade among the U.S., China, and other nations. When a nuclear warhead is detonated at high altitude, a series of electromagnetic pulses radiate downward within the line of sight of the blast. These pulses can disable equipment with miniature electronics and long conductors. Electric grid controls and transmission systems are especially vulnerable. Intense …

A Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) system has been developed and is being used to study electron charge injection, transport, and relaxation in highly disordered insulating materials. The material is placed between two electrodes in a parallel plate configuration. The sample is injected with charge via electrode charging by applying a high voltage across the sample. The distribution of charge in the dielectric is measured with PEA by applying a ~100 MHz ~850 V electric pulse to displace the embedded charge, causing an acoustic pulse monitored via time-of-flight with a thin piezoelectric sensor allowing observation of charge accumulation and dissipation.
