Multiple complex space-charge structures in unmagnetized low-temperature plasmas arise from ionization phenomena near additional negatively or positively biased electrodes or due to local constraints. Because of their usually spherical form, such structures are called fireballs. If they appear inside hollow grids, they are called inverted fireballs or plasma bubbles. The temporal evolution of such structures is often accompanied by strong plasma instabilities. The dynamics of complex space-charge structures have been investigated by using single spherical grid cathode with an orifice. Langmuir probe and optical emission spectroscopy were used to diagnose the structures. Measurements delivered the axial profiles of the plasma …

Effect Of Reduction Of Breath-Holding Time In The Single-Breath Method To Assess Carbon Monoxide Diffusing Capacity, Elsa Magro Jun 2012

Effect Of Reduction Of Breath-Holding Time In The Single-Breath Method To Assess Carbon Monoxide Diffusing Capacity, Elsa Magro

Masters

Measurement of the diffusing capacity of the lung is part of the routine pulmonary function assessment in every patient and the single breath method is the most commonly used method. This method requires a subject to inspire a gas mixture followed by a 10 second (s) breath-hold. However dyspnoea may preclude measurement in patients with advanced pulmonary disease. We sought to determine if breath-hold time reduction had a significant effect on measured DLco values.
Forced spirometry and CO-diffusion by the single breath method were
performed by a respiratory scientist with a Jaeger master-screen PFT equipment, in duplicate with breath-holding of …

A Phenomenographic Study Of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches To Their Learning And Perceptions Of Their Learning Environment In A Physics Problem-Based Learning Environment, Paul Irving Jan 2010

A Phenomenographic Study Of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches To Their Learning And Perceptions Of Their Learning Environment In A Physics Problem-Based Learning Environment, Paul Irving

Doctoral

This phenomenographic study describes students’ approaches to learning and their perceptions of the learning environment in an introductory physics course which is taught using a problem-based learning approach. This research builds on previous studies which showed that these students develop a greater conceptual knowledge than their counterparts in a more traditional learning environment while others showed very little development even though they engaged fully with the pedagogy. This study aimed to examine and describe the students’ approaches to learning. The definitions of surface, strategic and deep approaches to learning are not appropriate in this context and could not be applied …

An Investigation Of Introductory Physics Students’ Approaches To Problem Solving, Laura Walsh, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe Jun 2007

An Investigation Of Introductory Physics Students’ Approaches To Problem Solving, Laura Walsh, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe

Articles

This paper outlines ongoing research investigating students’ approaches to quantitative and qualitative problem solving in physics. This is an empirical study, which was conducted using a phenomenographic approach to analyse and interpret data from individual semi-structured interviews with students from introductory physics courses. The result of the study thus far is a preliminary set of hierarchical categories that describe the students’ problem-solving approaches when faced with various physics problems. The findings from the research presented here indicate that many introductory students in higher education do not approach problem solving in a strategic manner and many do not try to link …

Cardiac Relaxation Dynamics Investigated By Doppler Tissue Imaging (Dti), Gerard J. King May 2005

Cardiac Relaxation Dynamics Investigated By Doppler Tissue Imaging (Dti), Gerard J. King

Doctoral

Following an initial pilot study to explore the usefulness of Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) for the assessment of regional systolic dysfunction in the ischaemic heart, new techniques for the diagnosis of diastolic dysfunction have been developed

In the refinement of the techniques further evidence to support the existence of the early diastolic mechanism was obtained prior to assessing its clinical utility. For this the relationship between peak early diastolic mitral ring tissue velocity (EA) as a surrogate for recoil, and the acceleration of early transmitral flow (ventricular filling) was investigated in patients with diastolic dysfunction and in normal subjects. This …

High-Speed Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Carol Armstrong Jan 2004

High-Speed Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Carol Armstrong

Masters

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is used to measure surface displacements. Phase shifting can be used to obtain a fringe pattern which depicts the phase at every point in an image. Previous studies have used algorithms such as the 4-bucket algorithm to obtain phase maps of objects. After the object is displaced a second phase map is obtained in the same way and by correlation the phase difference due to the displacement can be determined. When the object is in rapid continuous motion these algorithms cannot be used. Towards this end a 5-frame algorithm was written, in which the calibrated …

In-Situ Spectroscopic Studies Of Electronic Processes In Buckminsterfullerene Thin Films, Gordon Chambers May 2001

In-Situ Spectroscopic Studies Of Electronic Processes In Buckminsterfullerene Thin Films, Gordon Chambers

Doctoral

This study attempts to develop an understanding of the electronic processes active within the solid state of C60. The emphasis throughout the work has been upon the generation and spectroscopic identification of any species, which could potentially contribute to electronic conduction in thin films of C60. The relative importance of these inter-and intramolecular processes in terms of their contribution to the electronic transport is discussed through the comparison of the properties of the molecule with the properties of the bulk solid

Initially the low intensity optical properties of the C60 molecule in solution and in solid were assessed. Vibrational spectroscopy …

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden Aug 1999

The Design And Construction Of An Out-Of-Plane Sensitive Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometer For Non-Destructive Testing Applications, Alexander Burden

Masters

There are many non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques use din industry, which employ acoustic emission, ultrasound, X-rays and thermography. Optical interferometric methodology is being increasingly used in industry. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is one of the principal optical interferometric techniques used in NDT to measure deformations. Optical surface metrology offers many advantages over conventional methods. These include greater sensitivity, improved lateral and vertical resolution, non-contact and full field measurement. Conventional methods of NDT however continue to be chosen over ESPI. The objective of this thesis is focused on making ESPI more feasible as a NDT technique for use in industry. …
