Smart Grid Control: Demand Side Management In Household Refrigerators As A Tool For Load Shifting, Anogh Utkalika Zaman, James Doyle
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
With improved supply of renewable sources of energy the focus has shifted away from simply producing clean energy to efficient consumption of energy. Until cheaper methods of energy storage are developed, Demand Side Management (DSM) is the best option for maximising energy efficiency. This paper proposes a method of turning regular refrigerators into smart demand response fridges. First, we develop an algorithm that accounts for small fluctuations in price and switches the device for optimal performance and lowered running cost. Then, we use longer price fluctuations to predict suitable times for pre-cooling and investigate the reduction in price as a …

Dynamic Analysis Of A Microgrid Powered With An Inverter And Machine-Based Distributed Resources, Brandon William Blackstone
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The proliferation of renewable distributed energy resources, particularly photovoltaic (PV) power systems, and the increasing need for a reliable power supply has led to the concept of microgrids, a mini-grid that consists of locally connected power generation units and needs, able to operate connected or disconnected from the utility grid, using controlled and coordinated methods to provide for the users of the microgrid the best possible conditions for their needs. The main technical issues facing microgrids include some of the following, seamless transition from stand-alone to utility grid connected operation, how to preserve frequency and voltage stability, and provide the …

Cost Optimization With Solar And Conventional Energy Production, Energy Storage, And Real Time Pricing, Ata Raziei, Kevin Hallinan, Robert Brecha
Robert J. Brecha
Research is presented that investigates the potential for solar power generation with battery energy storage for reducing the effective cost of energy delivered to residential customers if real time pricing is present. A linear optimization approach is developed based upon a two-step process. In step one, given a specified solar array area and battery capacity, the optimal means to meet loads based upon grid power, solar power, and/or battery power is determined. This analysis considers an expected lifespan of the solar panel. With these results established, in the next step, the capital costs for the solar arrays and batteries are …
Developing A Simulation Model For Power Demand Control Analysis And Privacy Protection In Smart Grid, Sungchul Lee
Developing A Simulation Model For Power Demand Control Analysis And Privacy Protection In Smart Grid, Sungchul Lee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the growing awareness of the need for Smart Grid, various countries are taking initiatives for developing Smart Grid. However, there is limited research on utilizing Smart Grid for Power Demand Control compared to the other areas such as Smart Grid communication network or renewable energy integration. Therefore, this study attempts to help the current Outage Management System by creating a Simulator that allows an intuitive power demand control analysis. Electrical usage is simulated by taking various inputs including the number of houses, family size, work and life patterns, electrical devices, time, etc. For accurate estimate of family and life …
