Nitrification Inhibitors, Wilbur Frye
Nitrification Inhibitors, Wilbur Frye
Soil Science News and Views
Nitrogen often limits the production of nonlegume crops because of inefficiency of N fertilizers. In some cases, more than half the fertilizer N may be lost from the soil. Therefore, it is important to use it as efficiently as possible. One way in which N fertilizer efficiency may be improved is by slowing the nitrification process in the soil.
Soil Surveys In Kentucky, Harry Hudson Bailey
Soil Surveys In Kentucky, Harry Hudson Bailey
Soil Science News and Views
Fifty-four Kentucky counties have modern soil surveys (published 1959, or later) using the mapping and soil classification procedures of the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The cooperators in the program include the USDA-SCS, USDA-FS, Kentucky Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station.
Soil Drainage---Effects On Crop Production, Kenneth L. Wells
Soil Drainage---Effects On Crop Production, Kenneth L. Wells
Soil Science News and Views
One of the major physical properties of soil which is important to crop production is drainage through the rooting zone. This characteristic greatly influences aeration in the rooting zone, and the degree of aeration greatly influences several important biochemical reactions of economic importance to crop production.

The research conducted in 1972 emphasized a nutrient assay of soil from the Curlew Valley site, phosphorus inventory of the vegetation and rabbit droppings, and further chemical characterization of soil phosphorus, which also included determination of the kinetics and energetics of the calcium carbonate-phosphate system.
Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
Capillary-Diffusion And Self-Diffusion Of Liquid Water In Unsaturated Soils, Ronald E. Phillips, V. L. Quisenberry Jr.
KWRRI Research Reports
Capillary-diffusion coefficients were measured by use of inflow and outflow methods. With both methods the capillary-diffusion coefficients decreased very rapidly with decreasing water content. The lighter textured soils were found to have the higher diffusion coefficients over the entire moisture content range studied, 0 to 1 bar tension.
Self-diffusion coefficients were measured over a moisture content range from air dryness to saturation using 3H as a tracer of water. Each of the soils gave the same diffusion characteristics when the self-diffusion coefficients were expressed as a function of either water content or average number of water layers on the …

A Soil And Vegetation Inventory And Analysis Of Three Nebraska Sandhills Range Sites, Donald F. Burzlaff
A Soil And Vegetation Inventory And Analysis Of Three Nebraska Sandhills Range Sites, Donald F. Burzlaff
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
This study was undertaken to inventory the soils and vegetation of certain areas of the Sandhills and to seek edaphic characteristics that may be the limiting factor in the distribution of various plant species. Information of this nature will permit formulation of more accurate management practices because of a refinement in delineation of range sites.

Nitrate Production As Affected By Grain-Crop Residues On The Surface Of The Soil, T. M. Mccalla, J. C. Russel
Nitrate Production As Affected By Grain-Crop Residues On The Surface Of The Soil, T. M. Mccalla, J. C. Russel
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The purpose of this bulletin is to present the data on nitrate contents and nitrate production in tests where straw or stalk residues were left on the surface through subsurface tillage, as compared with check treatments where these residues were plowed under or were absent. Nine of these tests were at Lincoln, Nebraska, and one was at the Hastings, Nebraska, Hydrological Project. Two tests were conducted in 1939, four in 1941, and four in 1942.

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always
Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
These experiments were carried out in connection with and subordinate to various soil investigations, the object being to determine the relation of the final water content of the soil to the hygroscopic coefficient and to determine to what extent the moisture was removed from the different portions of the subsoil not penetrated by plant roots.

Bulletin No. 121 - The Soil Of The Southern Utah Experiment Station, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart
UAES Bulletins
The soil of the Southern Utah Experiment Farm is a very interesting type: it is highly charged with gypsum and thereby presents a condition unique in reported studies of the soils of America. Gypsiferous soils are characteristic of a large portion of Southern Utah; many of them are derived from shale, others from sandstone, impregnated with gypsum.

Bulletin No. 114 - The Movement Of Nitric Nitrogen In Soil And Its Relation To "Nitrogen Fixation", Robert Stewart, J. E. Greaves
UAES Bulletins
In the spring of 1903, we commenced at the Utah Experiment Station a series of experiments, the purpose of which was to study the development and movement of nitrates in irrigated soil. The work was so outlined that it should give some very definite results, both as to the influence of water and the plant, upon the nitric nitrogen content of the soil.

Bulletin No. 89 - A New Centrifugal Soil Elutriator, P. A. Yoder
UAES Bulletins
Within recent years much has been done toward determining the agricultural significance of certain physical properties of the soil. The grade of fineness is the most important of these physical properties, in that it determines, to a large extent, other properties. The· mechanical analysis of soils has thus come to be considered of primary importance in soil investigations. Any improvements in the methods or apparatus for mechanical analysis will, therefore, doubtless be welcomed by agricultural investigators. Though this is a very recent line of work, still many devices have been introduced for the separation of soil on the basis of …
