Evaluating Spatial-Temporal Patterns In Us Tornado Occurrence With Space Time Cube Analysis And Linear Kernel Density Estimation: 1950-2019, Darrell L. Wiser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research estimated the spatial-temporal patterns of tornadoes in the continental United States from 1950-2019 using the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center’s Severe Weather GIS (SVRGIS) database. This study employed Space-Time Cube Analysis and Linear Kernel Density (Kernel Density Linear Process, (KDLP)) rather than the standard Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) approach; to evaluate whether tornado hotspot locations and intensities shift over time.

The first phase of the study utilized KDLP to map changes in tornado hotspots and qualitatively assess decadal shifts in hotspot locations and intensities by occurrence and magnitude between decades using ArcGIS Pro and CrimeStat. Next an …

Analysis And Risk Estimation Of High Priority Unstable Rock Slopes In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee And North Carolina, Samantha Farmer Aug 2021

Analysis And Risk Estimation Of High Priority Unstable Rock Slopes In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee And North Carolina, Samantha Farmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) received 12.5 million visitors in 2020. With a high traffic volume, it is imperative roadways remain open and free from obstruction. Annual unanticipated rockfall events in GRSM often obstruct traffic flow. Using the Unstable Slope Management Program for Federal Land Management Agencies (USMP for FLMA) protocols, this study analyzes high priority unstable rock slopes through 1) creation of an unstable slope geodatabase and 2) generation of a final rockfall risk model using Co-Kriging from a preliminary risk model and susceptibility model. A secondary goal of this study is to provide risk estimation for the …

Comparing Structure From Motion Photogrammetry And Computer Vision For Low-Cost 3d Cave Mapping: Tipton-Haynes Cave, Tennessee, Clinton Elmore Aug 2019

Comparing Structure From Motion Photogrammetry And Computer Vision For Low-Cost 3d Cave Mapping: Tipton-Haynes Cave, Tennessee, Clinton Elmore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural caves represent one of the most difficult environments to map with modern 3D technologies. In this study I tested two relatively new methods for 3D mapping in Tipton-Haynes Cave near Johnson City, Tennessee: Structure from Motion Photogrammetry and Computer Vision using Tango, an RGB-D (Red Green Blue and Depth) technology. Many different aspects of these two methods were analyzed with respect to the needs of average cave explorers. Major considerations were cost, time, accuracy, durability, simplicity, lighting setup, and drift. The 3D maps were compared to a conventional cave map drafted with measurements from a modern digital survey instrument …

Improving Sinkhole Mapping Using Lidar Data And Locating Sinkhole Hotspots In Johnson City, Tn, Kingsley Fasesin Dec 2018

Improving Sinkhole Mapping Using Lidar Data And Locating Sinkhole Hotspots In Johnson City, Tn, Kingsley Fasesin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Predicting infrastructure damage and economic impact of sinkholes requires high accuracy mapping distribution and development. The study mapped sinkholes and sinkhole hotpsots in Johnson City, TN using LiDAR-derived Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a database of known sinkholes which were matched to LiDAR-derived depressions. For all matched depressions (n = 404), three metrics were calculated: circularity index, ratio of length to width of the Minimum Bounding Rectangle (MBR) and percent coverage of the MBR by the depression, and 3,634 new sinkholes were identified. Newly developed hotspots were identified in north Johnson City and other areas in the south near the …

Fm Radio Signal Propagation Evaluation And Creating Statistical Models For Signal Strength Prediction In Differing Topographic Environments, Timothy Land May 2018

Fm Radio Signal Propagation Evaluation And Creating Statistical Models For Signal Strength Prediction In Differing Topographic Environments, Timothy Land

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Radio wave signal strength and associated propagation models are rarely analyzed across individual geographic provinces. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Radio Mobile model to predict radio wave signal strength in the Blue Ridge and Valley and Ridge physiographic provinces. A spectrum analyzer was used on 19 FM transmitters to determine model accuracy. Statistical analysis determined the significance between different terrain factors and signal strength. Field signal strength was found to be related to test site elevation, transmitter azimuth, elevation angle, transmitter elevation, path loss, and distance. Using 76 signal strength receiver sites, Ordinary Least Square regression models predicted …

Spatiotemporal Analyses Of Recycled Water Production, Jana E. Archer May 2017

Spatiotemporal Analyses Of Recycled Water Production, Jana E. Archer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased demands on water supplies caused by population expansion, saltwater intrusion, and drought have led to water shortages which may be addressed by use of recycled water as recycled water products. Study I investigated recycled water production in Florida and California during 2009 to detect gaps in distribution and identify areas for expansion. Gaps were detected along the panhandle and Miami, Florida, as well as the northern and southwestern regions in California. Study II examined gaps in distribution, identified temporal change, and located areas for expansion for Florida in 2009 and 2015. Production increased in the northern and southern regions …
