Coded Distributed Function Computation, Pedro J. Soto Jun 2022

Coded Distributed Function Computation, Pedro J. Soto

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A ubiquitous problem in computer science research is the optimization of computation on large data sets. Such computations are usually too large to be performed on one machine and therefore the task needs to be distributed amongst a network of machines. However, a common problem within distributed computing is the mitigation of delays caused by faulty machines. This can be performed by the use of coding theory to optimize the amount of redundancy needed to handle such faults. This problem differs from classical coding theory since it is concerned with the dynamic coded computation on data rather than just statically …

A Machine Learning Approach For Reconnaissance Detection To Enhance Network Security, Rachel Bakaletz May 2022

A Machine Learning Approach For Reconnaissance Detection To Enhance Network Security, Rachel Bakaletz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Before cyber-crime can happen, attackers must research the targeted organization to collect vital information about the target and pave the way for the subsequent attack phases. This cyber-attack phase is called reconnaissance or enumeration. This malicious phase allows attackers to discover information about a target to be leveraged and used in an exploit. Information such as the version of the operating system and installed applications, open ports can be detected using various tools during the reconnaissance phase. By knowing such information cyber attackers can exploit vulnerabilities that are often unique to a specific version.

In this work, we develop an …

A Novel Handover Method Using Destination Prediction In 5g-V2x Networks, Pooja Shyamsundar Jan 2022

A Novel Handover Method Using Destination Prediction In 5g-V2x Networks, Pooja Shyamsundar

Master's Projects

This paper proposes a novel approach to handover optimization in fifth generation vehicular networks. A key principle in designing fifth generation vehicular network technology is continuous connectivity. This makes it important to ensure that there are no gaps in communication for mobile user equipment. Handovers can cause disruption in connectivity as the process involves switching from one base station to another. Issues in the handover process include poor load management for moving traffic resulting in low bandwidth or connectivity gaps, too many hops resulting in multiple unneccessary handovers, short dwell times and ineffective base station selection resulting in delays and …

Predict The Failure Of Hydraulic Pumps By Different Machine Learning Algorithms, Yifei Zhou, Monika Ivantysynova, Nathan Keller

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Pump failure is a general concerned problem in the hydraulic field. Once happening, it will cause a huge property loss and even the life loss. The common methods to prevent the occurrence of pump failure is by preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance, however, both of them have significant drawbacks. This research focuses on the axial piston pump and provides a new solution by the prognostic of pump failure using the classification of machine learning. Different kinds of sensors (temperature, acceleration and etc.) were installed into a good condition pump and three different kinds of damaged pumps to measure 10 of …

Operating System Identification By Ipv6 Communication Using Machine Learning Ensembles, Adrian Ordorica Aug 2017

Operating System Identification By Ipv6 Communication Using Machine Learning Ensembles, Adrian Ordorica

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Operating system (OS) identification tools, sometimes called fingerprinting tools, are essential for the reconnaissance phase of penetration testing. While OS identification is traditionally performed by passive or active tools that use fingerprint databases, very little work has focused on using machine learning techniques. Moreover, significantly more work has focused on IPv4 than IPv6. We introduce a collaborative neural network ensemble that uses a unique voting system and a random forest ensemble to deliver accurate predictions. This approach uses IPv6 features as well as packet metadata features for OS identification. Our experiment shows that our approach is valid and we achieve …

Mobile Computing: Challenges And Opportunities For Autonomy And Feedback, Ole J. Mengshoel, Bob Iannucci, Abe Ishihara

Ole J Mengshoel

Mobile devices have evolved to become computing platforms more similar to desktops and workstations than the cell phones and handsets of yesteryear. Unfortunately, today’s mobile infrastructures are mirrors of the wired past. Devices, apps, and networks impact one another, but a systematic approach for allowing them to cooperate is currently missing. We propose an approach that seeks to open key interfaces and to apply feedback and autonomic computing to improve both user experience and mobile system dynamics.
