It is my pleasure to present the UNLV Transmutation Research Program’s third annual report that highlights the academic year 2003 – 2004. Supporting this document are the many technical reports and scientific papers that have been generated over the past three years.

In the third year of our program, we experienced infrastructure growth despite a decreasing budget. This past year we continued into the final phases of the initial 16 independent student research tasks started in 2001 and 2002, supporting 45 graduate students and 11 undergraduates in 6 academic departments across the UNLV scientific and engineering communities during the academic …

This Quarterly Report is a primary deliverable from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) University Participation Program (UPP) Director to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as described in the UNLV AAA proposal and Statement of Work for the Fourth Quarter.

The UNLV AAA UPP Director implements the program’s administration using staff from the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) to ensure that work conducted under the UNLV AAA UPP meets program objectives. The UNLV AAA program consists of three components: Program Support, Research Infrastructure Augmentation, and Student Research.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Transmutation Research Program has been tasked to support U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) efforts to assess the health risks associated with the operation of each of their accelerator-driven nuclear facilities for both NEPA and PSAR development. Quantifying the radiological risks to workers will have to be addressed during the design and siting of each of these facilities. For the first year of this effort, the UNLV research team set out four objectives. First, the university and laboratory consortium had to be established. This consortium was tasked with helping to determine the methodology for determining the dose coefficients, and to ensure that the resulting DCs will be of use to the national programs developing accelerator-driven nuclear systems (such as the SNS or an accelerator-driven transmutation system) and to the health physics community as a whole. Transmutation Research Program Reports (TRP)

The UNLV Transmutation Research Program was established in March 2001 as part of the national Advanced Accelerator Applications program to develop the technologies necessary for the ecological and economical treatment of spent nuclear fuel.

The primary role of the UNLV program in the national effort is the training of graduate and undergraduate students in nuclear engineering and other related fields to support the augmentation of the U.S. human infrastructure for transmutation technologies.

Electrical Network-Based Time-Dependent Model Of Electrical Breakdown In Water, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, K. H. Schoenbach

A time-dependent, two-dimensional, percolative approach to model dielectric breakdown based on a network of parallel resistor–capacitor elements having random values, has been developed. The breakdown criteria rely on a threshold electric field and on energy dissipation exceeding the heat of vaporization. By carrying out this time-dependent analysis, the development and propagation of streamers and prebreakdown dynamical evolution have been obtained directly. These model simulations also provide the streamer shape, characteristics such as streamer velocity, the prebreakdown delay time, time-dependent current, and relationship between breakdown times, and applied electric fields for a given geometry. Cyclohexanone, the central component of the compound 2-methyl-2-methylacrylylcyclohexanone-( l,5)-diaxaspiro mononeopentyl (see figure on page 2), serves as a solvent for oil in piston type aircraft and in natural and vinyl resins. It is used in the production of crude rubber, waxes, fats, shellac and DDT and other pesticides. Cyclohexanone also is a part of the production of adipic acid, which is used to prepare nylon and is used to prepare cyclohexanone resins via condensation to enhance the adhesive properties of products like floor paints.

Theoretical Study Of Pseudorotation Of Pentacoordinated Silicon Anions: The Prototypical Sih5-, Mark S. Gordon, Theresa L. Windus, Larry W. Burggraf, Larry P. Davis

Ab initio and semiempirical calculations are used to analyze the minimum energy path for the pseudorotation of SiH5-. Both AMI and MP2/6-31++G(d,p) predict pseudorotation barriers of 2.4 kcal/mol. A decomposition of the projected vibrational frequencies along the path is used to assist in the interpretation of the process.

Several studies in the past have shown radon to be present in many natural waters including mineral springs, hot springs, rivers, lakes, and rainwater. A compilation of tables of radon concentration in mineral and hot springs all over the world was published by Kuroda in 1953. Most of this radon comes from radium and uranium minerals which the springs flow over. The radon concentration in lakes is from two major souces [sic]. One source is dissolved radium and the other is the inflow of high radon concentration groundwaters [sic].

Four factors influence the concentrations of radionuclides in Dardanelle Lake water: injections due to fallout and discharge from Nuclear I coupled with losses due to decay, to dilution and to sedimentation. It is possible to estimate the first three factors and to measure monthly changes in the concentrations of Sr-89, Ce-141, Cs-137, Co-38, Ce-144, and Sr-90 - Y-90 during periods when the concentrations of these nuclides are abnormally high (after large releases or the Chinese weapons tests) or abnormally low (during reactor refueling).

Concentrations of the nuclides ⁹⁰Sr - ⁹⁰Y, ¹⁴⁴Ce - ¹⁴⁴Pr, ¹³⁷Cs, ³⁸Co, ¹¹⁰ͫAg, ¹⁴¹Ce and ⁸⁹Sr have been measured monthly since November, 1975. The results from the period September, 1976, to August, 1977, depend on the relative intensities of the sources of the radionuclides; emissions from Nuclear I, the Chinese nuclear tests of Fall, 1976, and fallout from older atmospheric tests.

This honors project was designed for familiarization with modern instrumentation and experimentation methods for radioisotope detection and energy calculations. The two main instruments I studied were the Geiger-Mueller Counter and a single channel pulse height analyzer. This report will include a brief history of radiation and a description of the more important types. Next is a description of the two instruments mentioned and some simple experiments I conducted using them.

The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission has been evaluating a large area of central Nevada in order to define a supplemental test site for the underground testing of high-yield nuclear devices. Safety considerations involving the radiocontamination of the ground water in the vicinity of the test site necessitated that research be conducted to determine the direction and rate of flow of the ground water. This investigation defines the ground water flow systems in eighteen valleys comprising 12,000 square miles of central Nevada.

The definition of the systems was made following a compilation of existing hydrologic and geologic data for the area. …

In induction experiments with naturally occurring and artificially lysogenic strains of S. potsdam, cells were irradiated in buffer, transferred to complete medium, and then assayed for free phage. Irradiation was followed by half hourly samples for free phage from the growing populations of irradiated cells. For an estimation of burst sizes, the irradiated cells were diluted out to a final concentration of 1 cell per ml and distributed to tubes in 0.5 ml quantities.
