Nitro-Aromatic Polymers For Conversion-Style Battery Cathodic Materials, Brady P. Samuelson May 2022

Nitro-Aromatic Polymers For Conversion-Style Battery Cathodic Materials, Brady P. Samuelson

Honors Thesis

The development of organic electrode materials in rechargeable batteries has seen a resurgence in recent decades. This spike in interest is mostly due to the increased investments in renewable energy sources, grid-scale energy storage, and the rapid transition to electric vehicles. Current lithium battery cathode materials typically use some form of lithium metal oxide (specific capacity: 272 mAh g-1 which has problems with limited capacity, thermal runaway, and an unreliable supply chain. Our research group’s solution involves investigating new lightweight, organic redox groups combined with a conductive polymer backbone to serve as a possible replacement for the cathode in …

The Emerging Applications Of Sulfur (Vi) Fluorides In Catalysis, Nicholas Ball, Cayo Lee, Jonathan E. Elisabeth, Nathan C. Friede, Glenn M. Sammis

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The past decade has witnessed remarkable growth of catalytic transformations in organic sulfur(VI) fluoride chemistry. This Perspective concentrates exclusively on foundational examples that utilize catalytic strategies to synthesize and react S(VI) fluorides. Key mechanistic studies that aim to provide insight toward future catalytic systems are emphasized.

Synthesis And Conductivity Analysis Of A Methyl (Polyethylene Glycol) Comb Polymer, Olivia Fox Apr 2021

Synthesis And Conductivity Analysis Of A Methyl (Polyethylene Glycol) Comb Polymer, Olivia Fox

Honors Theses

The overall goal of work in this field is to improve materials for use in a variety of applications in fuel cell and battery production. This thesis specifically investigates the synthesis of two variations of a methyl (polyethylene glycol) comb polymer electrolyte (MePEGnwhere n=7) to understand how the molecular structure of an ion-conducting polymer affects its electrochemical properties. The MePEG used in this synthesis contains seven ethylene glycol groups and was added to a poly (methylhydrosiloxane) comb polymer backbone. In the first sample, the polymer contained only the MePEG sidechain, and in the second sample, the polymer contained …

Synthesis Of Stable Organic Radical Homo- And Co-Polymers And Their Applications In Solid-State Devices, Michael Anghel Oct 2020

Synthesis Of Stable Organic Radical Homo- And Co-Polymers And Their Applications In Solid-State Devices, Michael Anghel

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis outlines the synthesis and characterization of a stable organic radical homopolymer incorporating nitronyl nitroxide radicals, as well as the synthesis and characterization of random and block co-polymers incorporating nitronyl nitroxide and 6-oxoverdazyl radicals.

The nitronyl nitroxide homopolymer was synthesized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), yielding polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Studies of polymer growth as a function of time and monomer:catalyst ratio revealed the ROMP to be well-behaved. Spectroscopic analysis of the polymer showed that the radicals possessed high radical content, indicating that they are tolerated by ROMP. Conductivity studies of thin-films made …

Modification And Optimization Of Conducting Polymer-Modified, Redox-Magnetohydrodynamics (R-Mhd) Pumping For Enhanced And Sustained Microfluidics Applications, Md Foysal Zahid Khan Aug 2019

Modification And Optimization Of Conducting Polymer-Modified, Redox-Magnetohydrodynamics (R-Mhd) Pumping For Enhanced And Sustained Microfluidics Applications, Md Foysal Zahid Khan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work, a novel microfluidic pumping approach, redox-magnetohydrodynamics (R-MHD) has improved by materials and device optimization to use in lab-on-a-chip applications. In R-MHD, magnetic flux (B) and ionic current density (j) interacts to generate body force (FB) in between active electrodes, according to the equation FB = j×B. This unique fluid pumping approach is scalable, tunable, generates flat flow profile, and does not require any channels or valves. Pumping performance, such as speed scales with the ionic current density (j) and duration depends on the total charge (Q). The ionic current density (j) results from the conversion of electronic …

Electropolymerization Of Polyaniline In The Presence Of Ferricyanide: Electrochemical, Spectroscopic And Gravimetric Studies, Lucas Marinelli Dec 2018

Electropolymerization Of Polyaniline In The Presence Of Ferricyanide: Electrochemical, Spectroscopic And Gravimetric Studies, Lucas Marinelli

Master's Theses

In this work, ferricyanide-doped polyaniline (PANI) is electropolymerized by constant current and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements with simultaneous monitoring of mass changes using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (eQCM). Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and CV measurements confirm the incorporation of the ferricyanide into the film and indicate modified electrical conductivity. UV-Vis absorbance spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirm the conducting ‘emeraldine-salt’ state and confirm the presence of polarons, i.e. charge carriers.

The addition of ferricyanide during electropolymerization of the PANI film results in an increase of polymerization rate as confirmed using eQCM. A decrease in counter ion ingress/egress and an …

Synthesis Of Metal-Containing Polymers And Stable Organic Radical-Containing Polymers And Their Use As Advanced Functional Materials, Joseph A. Paquette Dec 2016

Synthesis Of Metal-Containing Polymers And Stable Organic Radical-Containing Polymers And Their Use As Advanced Functional Materials, Joseph A. Paquette

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The work presented in this thesis details the synthesis and characterization of two different families of multifunctional polymers. The first family involved the incorporation of stable 6-oxoverdazyl radicals into polymer scaffolds. This was originally achieved by the polymerization of the radical precursors, phenyl- and isopropyl-6-oxotetrazanes, followed by post-polymerization oxidation to afford the phenyl- and isopropyl-6-oxoverdazyl polymers. A second methodology involved the direct polymerization of isopropyl-6-oxoverdazyl radicals using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to afford polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The polymers were characterized by the close comparison of the physical and spectroscopic properties …

Modified-Electrodes For Redox-Magnetohydrodynamic (Mhd) Pumping For Microfluidic Applications, Christena Kayl Nash Aug 2014

Modified-Electrodes For Redox-Magnetohydrodynamic (Mhd) Pumping For Microfluidic Applications, Christena Kayl Nash

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new microfluidic pumping and stirring technique was demonstrated for lab-on-a-chip applications. Microfluidics was accomplished via redox-MHD, which takes advantage of a body force (FB) that is generated when there is a net movement of ions in solution (j) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field (B), according to the equation FB = j×B. In this work the movement of ions in solution was generated using electrodes modified with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) rather than a redox species in solution, which can interfere with analyte detection and with biological species. …
