Examining The Effects Of Amino And Thiolate Ligands On The Reactivity And Selectivity Of Palladium On Carbon In Hydrogenation Reactions, Eric Liu, Christina Li Aug 2018

Examining The Effects Of Amino And Thiolate Ligands On The Reactivity And Selectivity Of Palladium On Carbon In Hydrogenation Reactions, Eric Liu, Christina Li

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Heterogeneous catalysts are used widely by chemical and energy industries because they show high reactivity but often suffer from lack of selectivity. On the other hand, ligands are commonly used in homogeneous catalysts to control the reactivity and selectivity; however, the effects of the ligands on the steric and electronic properties of heterogeneous catalysts are less understood. We examine the effects of four different ligands: 1-adamantanethiol, 1-adamantylamine, 1-dodecanethiol, and 1-dodecylamine, for the commercial hydrogenation catalyst palladium on carbon. Hydrogenation reactions are used as a screening tool to see the behavior that the different catalysts exhibit in the presence of unsaturated …

Metal-Organic Frameworks And Graphene-Based Support Materials For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Andrew Lin Jan 2018

Metal-Organic Frameworks And Graphene-Based Support Materials For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Andrew Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Nanoparticles are involved in a broad range of applications, including heterogeneous catalysis. Nanoparticles tend to quickly lose their well-defined shapes and facets due to aggregation under duress such as heat.

A series of highly studied materials are explored as support materials for nanoparticle supports. These supports include metal-organic frameworks (MOF), graphene oxide (GO), and a MOF-PRGO (partially reduced graphene oxide) hybrid. The inclusion of a support with the palladium increased lifespan of the catalyst by separation of nanoparticles. The choice of support material not only allowed for supporting of palladium nanoparticles, but allowed for rational catalyst synthesis in order to …

Water-Soluble Pd And Pd-Alloy Nanoparticles As Catalysts In Biphasic Solvent., Shekhar Bhama Aug 2017

Water-Soluble Pd And Pd-Alloy Nanoparticles As Catalysts In Biphasic Solvent., Shekhar Bhama

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation shows the chemical synthesis of Pd and Pd-alloy nanoparticles (NPs) and their hydrogen and thermal stabilities for applications in the homogeneous and pseudo-homogeneous catalysis of organic reactions. Mainly, this dissertation describes 1) the chemical synthesis of Pd, PdPt, PdAu and Cu-Pd core-shell NPs coated with various organic ligands (thiols, amines and citrate), with different metal compositions in different synthetic environment, 2) the stability of solutions containing various NPs in the presence of hydrogen or varying temperatures, 3) the evaluation of the catalytic activity of Pd, PdPt, PdAu and CuPd NPs for hydrogenation/isomerization of allylic alcohols, and 4) the …

Novel Thermoplastic Elastomers Based On Benzofulvene: Synthesis And Mechanical Properties, Weiyu Wang Dec 2015

Novel Thermoplastic Elastomers Based On Benzofulvene: Synthesis And Mechanical Properties, Weiyu Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are of great importance both academically and technologically. Currently TPEs are the predominated form of styrene-diene copolymers. However, these styrenic TPEs have serious limitations in applications, especially at higher temperature, because of their low upper service temperature (UST). The work described in this dissertation aimed to developing thermoplastic elastomers with a higher UST and lower cost.

In order to develop TPEs with a higher UST, we employed benzofulvene, an anionically polymerizable monomer in hydrocarbon solvent at room temperature, as the glassy block and copolymerized it with isoprene to prepare polybenzofulvene-polyisoprene-polybenzofulvene (FIF) triblock copolymers. Among all triblock copolymers …

Compensation Effect Of Benzene Hydrogenation On Pt(111) And Pt(100) Analyzed By The Selective Energy Transfer Model, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Yimin Li, Ragnar Larsson, Gabor A. Somorjai Jan 2008

Compensation Effect Of Benzene Hydrogenation On Pt(111) And Pt(100) Analyzed By The Selective Energy Transfer Model, Kaitlin M. Bratlie, Yimin Li, Ragnar Larsson, Gabor A. Somorjai

Kaitlin M. Bratlie

Kinetic measurements at low temperatures (310-360 K) using gas chromatography (GC) for benzene hydrogenation on Pt(100) and Pt(111) single crystal surfaces have been carried out at Torr pressures. These kinetic measurements demonstrated a linear compensation effect for the production of cyclohexane. A detailed application of the model of selective energy transfer to the experimentally obtained results yields the vibrational frequency of the adsorbate leading to reaction. This frequency is attributed to ring distortion modes. The vibrational frequency of the heat bath, or catalyst, is ascribed to a Pt-H mode. An approximate heat of adsorption of the reacting molecule is also …

A Investigation Of Hydrogen-Storage Alloy As Catalytic Electrode For Hydrogenation Of Nitrobenzene, Shigang Lu, Hanxi Yang, Changfa Wan Feb 1995

A Investigation Of Hydrogen-Storage Alloy As Catalytic Electrode For Hydrogenation Of Nitrobenzene, Shigang Lu, Hanxi Yang, Changfa Wan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Since hydrogen.storage alloy ean not only absorb hydrogen atoms to form highlyreactive metal hydride as hydrogen source by electrolysis but also possesses a certain catalytic activityfor hydrogenation,it is thus feasible to utilize the allov as a novel electrOde for electrolvtichydrogenation in organic electrored uction. This work employed misch metal AB_5 type alloy as acatalytic electrode and studied the electrochemical hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. The hydrogen-storage electrede(MH)was a plastic bonded electrede sheet made from a paste ofMm(NiCoMnAl)_5 alloy powder and teflon emulsion. The electrolysis was performed at constantcurrent and controlled potential in a three electrede cell of H-type configuration. The electrolyte was0.5 …
