Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Controlled Manipulation And Transport By Microswimmers In Stokes Flows, Jake Buzhardt

All Dissertations

Remotely actuated microscale swimming robots have the potential to revolutionize many aspects of biomedicine. However, for the longterm goals of this field of research to be achievable, it is necessary to develop modelling, simulation, and control strategies which effectively and efficiently account for not only the motion of individual swimmers, but also the complex interactions of such swimmers with their environment including other nearby swimmers, boundaries, other cargo and passive particles, and the fluid medium itself. The aim of this thesis is to study these problems in simulation from the perspective of controls and dynamical systems, with a particular focus …

Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann Oct 2023

Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Rigid body motion requires formulations where rotational and translational motion are accounted for appropriately. Two Lie groups, the special orthogonal group SO(3) and the space of quaternions H, are commonly used to represent attitude. When considering rigid body pose, that is spacecraft position and attitude, the special Euclidean group SE(3) and the space of dual quaternions DH are frequently utilized. All these groups are Lie groups and Riemannian manifolds, and these identifications have profound implications for dynamics and controls. The trajectory optimization and optimal control problem on Riemannian manifolds presents significant opportunities for theoretical development. Riemannian optimization is an attractive …

Distributed Control Of Servicing Satellite Fleet Using Horizon Simulation Framework, Scott Plantenga Jun 2023

Distributed Control Of Servicing Satellite Fleet Using Horizon Simulation Framework, Scott Plantenga

Master's Theses

On-orbit satellite servicing is critical to maximizing space utilization and sustainability and is of growing interest for commercial, civil, and defense applications. Reliance on astronauts or anchored robotic arms for the servicing of next-generation large, complex space structures operating beyond Low Earth Orbit is impractical. Substantial literature has investigated the mission design and analysis of robotic servicing missions that utilize a single servicing satellite to approach and service a single target satellite. This motivates the present research to investigate a fleet of servicing satellites performing several operations for a large, central space structure.

This research leverages a distributed control approach, …

Modeling, Simulation And Control Of Microrobots For The Microfactory., Zhong Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Future assembly technologies will involve higher levels of automation in order to satisfy increased microscale or nanoscale precision requirements. Traditionally, assembly using a top-down robotic approach has been well-studied and applied to the microelectronics and MEMS industries, but less so in nanotechnology. With the boom of nanotechnology since the 1990s, newly designed products with new materials, coatings, and nanoparticles are gradually entering everyone’s lives, while the industry has grown into a billion-dollar volume worldwide. Traditionally, nanotechnology products are assembled using bottom-up methods, such as self-assembly, rather than top-down robotic assembly. This is due to considerations of volume handling of large …

Al-Azhar Bulletin of Science

This manuscript displays the vibrations reduction of a clamped- clamped micro-beam subjected to an excitation external force via applying the positive position feedback (PPF) controller. The approximate solutions of the whole system are obtained up to the second order approximation with the help of the multiple scale perturbation technique (MSP). The Stability analysis is studied by utilizing the frequency response equations near the simultaneous condition .Time histories and response curves figures before and after control of the whole system are examined numerically using Rung-Kutta Fourth-order method (Maple(16) software and Matlab 7.7(R2014) software. Numerical results of the influences of different parameters …

Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi May 2022

Model Based Force Estimation And Stiffness Control For Continuum Robots, Vincent A. Aloi

Doctoral Dissertations

Continuum Robots are bio-inspired structures that mimic the motion of snakes, elephant trunks, octopus tentacles, etc. With good design, these robots can be naturally compliant and miniaturizable, which makes Continuum Robots ideal for traversing narrow complex environments. Their flexible design, however, prevents us from using traditional methods for controlling and estimating loading on rigid link robots.

In the first thrust of this research, we provided a novel stiffness control law that alters the behavior of an end effector during contact. This controller is applicable to any continuum robot where a method for sensing or estimating tip forces and pose exists. …

Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack May 2022

Data And Algorithmic Modeling Approaches To Count Data, Andraya Hack

Honors College Theses

Various techniques are used to create predictions based on count data. This type of data takes the form of a non-negative integers such as the number of claims an insurance policy holder may make. These predictions can allow people to prepare for likely outcomes. Thus, it is important to know how accurate the predictions are. Traditional statistical approaches for predicting count data include Poisson regression as well as negative binomial regression. Both methods also have a zero-inflated version that can be used when the data has an overabundance of zeros. Another procedure is to use computer algorithms, also known as …

Optimal Stopping Problems For A Family Of Continuous-Time Markov Processes, Héctor Jasso-Fuentes, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Fidel Vásquez-Rojas Jun 2021

Optimal Stopping Problems For A Family Of Continuous-Time Markov Processes, Héctor Jasso-Fuentes, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Fidel Vásquez-Rojas

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

In this paper we study the well-know optimal stopping problem applied to a general family of continuous-time Markov process. The approach to follow is merely analytic and it is based on the characterization of stopping problems through the study of a certain variational inequality; namely one solution of this inequality will coincide with the optimal value of the stopping problem. In addition, by means of this characterization, it is possible to find the so-named continuation region, and as a byproduct obtaining the optimal stopping time. The most of the material is based on the semigroup theory, infinitesimal generators and resolvents. …

Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota Apr 2021

Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

Exploiting structures of matrices goes beyond identifying their non-zero patterns. In many cases, dense full-rank matrices have low-rank submatrices that can be exploited to construct fast approximate algorithms. In other cases, dense matrices can be decomposed into Kronecker factors that are much smaller than the original matrix. Sparsity is a consequence of the connectivity of the underlying geometry (mesh, graph, interaction list, etc.), whereas the rank-deficiency of submatrices is closely related to the distance within this underlying geometry. For high dimensional geometry encountered in data science applications, the curse of dimensionality poses a challenge for rank-structured approaches. On the other …

Analysis Of Boundary Observability Of Strongly Coupled One-Dimensional Wave Equations With Mixed Boundary Conditions, Wilson Dennis Horner Apr 2021

Analysis Of Boundary Observability Of Strongly Coupled One-Dimensional Wave Equations With Mixed Boundary Conditions, Wilson Dennis Horner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

*see note below

In control theory, the time it takes to receive a signal after it is sent is referred to as the observation time. For certain types of materials, the observation time to receive a wave signal differs depending on a variety of factors, such as material density, flexibility, speed of the wave propagation, etc. Suppose we have a strongly coupled system of two wave equations describing the longitudinal vibrations on a piezoelectric beam of length L. These two wave equations have non-identical wave propagation speeds c1 and c2. First, we prove the exact observability inequality with the optimal …

Replenishment Policy For Pareto Type Deteriorating Items With Quadratic Demand Under Partial Backlogging And Delay In Payments, Ganesh Kumar, Ramesh Inaniyan, Sunita - Dec 2020

Replenishment Policy For Pareto Type Deteriorating Items With Quadratic Demand Under Partial Backlogging And Delay In Payments, Ganesh Kumar, Ramesh Inaniyan, Sunita -

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present model develops a replenishment policy in which the demand rate is quadratic polynomial-time function. Deterioration rate is a Pareto type function. Shortages are partial backlogging and delay in payments are allowed. Holding cost is a linear function of time. The backlogging rate varies with the waiting duration for the next replenishment. The present paper determines the optimal policy for the individual by minimizing the total cost. The optimization procedure has been explained by a numerical example and a detailed sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution has been carried out to display the effect of various parameters.

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya Sep 2020

Numerical Computations Of Vortex Formation Length In Flow Past An Elliptical Cylinder, Matthew Karlson, Bogdan Nita, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Facuty Scholarship and Creative Works

We examine two dimensional properties of vortex shedding past elliptical cylinders through numerical simulations. Specifically, we investigate the vortex formation length in the Reynolds number regime 10 to 100 for elliptical bodies of aspect ratio in the range 0.4 to 1.4. Our computations reveal that in the steady flow regime, the change in the vortex length follows a linear profile with respect to the Reynolds number, while in the unsteady regime, the time averaged vortex length decreases in an exponential manner with increasing Reynolds number. The transition in profile is used to identify the critical Reynolds number which marks the …

Optimal Allocation Of Two Resources In Annual Plants, David Mcmorris Jul 2020

Optimal Allocation Of Two Resources In Annual Plants, David Mcmorris

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The fitness of an annual plant can be thought of as how much fruit is produced by the end of its growing season. Under the assumption that annual plants grow to maximize fitness, we can use techniques from optimal control theory to understand this process. We introduce two models for resource allocation in annual plants which extend classical work by Iwasa and Roughgarden to a case where both carbohydrates and mineral nutrients are allocated to shoots, roots, and fruits in annual plants. In each case, we use optimal control theory to determine the optimal resource allocation strategy for the plant …

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya Apr 2020

Teaching And Learning Of Fluid Mechanics, Ashwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Facuty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fluid mechanics occupies a privileged position in the sciences; it is taught in various science departments including physics, mathematics, environmental sciences and mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, with each highlighting a different aspect or interpretation of the foundation and applications of fluids. Doll’s fluid analogy [5] for this idea is especially relevant to this issue: “Emergence of creativity from complex flow of knowledge—example of Benard convection pattern as an analogy—dissipation or dispersal of knowledge (complex knowledge) results in emergent structures, i.e., creativity which in the context of education should be thought of as a unique way to arrange information so …

Some Recent Developments On Pareto-Optimal Reinsurance, Wenjun Jiang Jul 2019

Some Recent Developments On Pareto-Optimal Reinsurance, Wenjun Jiang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis focuses on developing Pareto-optimal reinsurance policy which considers the interests of both the insurer and the reinsurer. The optimal insurance/reinsurance design has been extensively studied in actuarial science literature, while in early years most studies were concentrated on optimizing the insurer’s interests. However, as early as 1960s, Borch argued that “an agreement which is quite attractive to one party may not be acceptable to its counterparty” and he pioneered the study on “fair” risk sharing between the insurer and the reinsurer. Quite recently, the question of how to strike a balance in risk sharing between an insurer and …

A New Successive Linearization Approach For Solving Nonlinear Programming Problems, Inci Albayrak, Mustafa Sivri, Gizem Temelcan Jun 2019

A New Successive Linearization Approach For Solving Nonlinear Programming Problems, Inci Albayrak, Mustafa Sivri, Gizem Temelcan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we focused on general nonlinear programming (NLP) problems having m nonlinear (or linear) algebraic inequality (or equality or mixed) constraints with a nonlinear (or linear) algebraic objective function in n variables. We proposed a new two-phase-successive linearization approach for solving NLP problems. Aim of this proposed approach is to find a solution of the NLP problem, based on optimal solution of linear programming (LP) problems, satisfying the nonlinear constraints oversensitively. This approach leads to novel methods. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the approach.

A Fuzzy Two-Warehouse Inventory Model For Single Deteriorating Item With Selling-Price-Dependent Demand And Shortage Under Partial-Backlogged Condition, S. K. Indrajitsingha, P. N. Samanta, U. K. Misra Jun 2019

A Fuzzy Two-Warehouse Inventory Model For Single Deteriorating Item With Selling-Price-Dependent Demand And Shortage Under Partial-Backlogged Condition, S. K. Indrajitsingha, P. N. Samanta, U. K. Misra

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we have developed an inventory model for a single deteriorating item with two separate storage facilities (one is owned warehouse (OW) and the other a rented warehouse (RW)) and in which demand is selling- price dependent. Shortage is allowed and is partially backlogged with a rate dependent on the duration of waiting time up to the arrival of next lot. It is assumed that the holding cost of the rented warehouse is higher than that of owned warehouse. As demand, selling- price, holding- cost, shortage, lost- sale, deterioration- rate are uncertain in nature, we consider them as …

Numerical Simulations For Optimal Control Of A Cancer Cell Model With Delay, Jessica S. Lugo

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Mathematical models are often created to analyze the complicated behavior of many physical systems. One such system is that of the interaction between cancer cells, the immune system, and various treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Using models that depict these relationships gives researchers insight on the dynamics of this complicated system and possibly ideas for improved treatment schedules.

The model presented here gives the relationship of cancer cells in development phases with immune cells and cycle-specific chemotherapy treatment. This model includes a constant delay term in the mitotic phase. Optimal control theory is used to minimize the cost …

Creating A Computational Tool To Simulate Vibration Control For Piezoelectric Devices, Ahmet Ozkan Ozer, Emma J. Moore Nov 2018

Creating A Computational Tool To Simulate Vibration Control For Piezoelectric Devices, Ahmet Ozkan Ozer, Emma J. Moore

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Piezoelectric materials have the unique ability to convert electrical energy to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. This project takes a stab to develop a reliable computational tool to simulate the vibration control of a novel “partial differential equation” model for a piezoelectric device, which is designed by integrating electric conducting piezoelectric layers constraining a viscoelastic layer to provide an active and lightweight intelligent structure. Controlling unwanted vibrations on piezoelectric devices (or harvesting energy from ambient vibrations) through piezoelectric layers has been the major focus in cutting-edge engineering applications such as ultrasonic welders and inchworms. The corresponding mathematical models for piezoelectric …

On The Well-Posedness And Global Boundary Controllability Of A Nonlinear Beam Model, Jessie Jamieson Aug 2018

On The Well-Posedness And Global Boundary Controllability Of A Nonlinear Beam Model, Jessie Jamieson

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The theory of beams and plates has been long established due to works spanning many fields, and has been explored through many investigations of beam and plate mechanics, controls, stability, and the well-posedness of systems of equations governing the motions of plates and beams. Additionally, recent investigations of flutter phenomena by Dowell, Webster et al. have reignited interest into the mechanics and stability of nonlinear beams. In this thesis, we wish to revisit the seminal well-posedness results of Lagnese and Leugering for the one dimensional, nonlinear beam from their 1991 paper, "Uniform stabilization of a nonlinear beam by nonlinear boundary …

Masked Instability: Within-Sector Financial Risk In The Presence Of Wealth Inequality, Youngna Choi Jun 2018

Masked Instability: Within-Sector Financial Risk In The Presence Of Wealth Inequality, Youngna Choi

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigate masked financial instability caused by wealth inequality. When an economic sector is decomposed into two subsectors that possess a severe wealth inequality, the sector in entirety can look financially stable while the two subsectors possess extreme financially instabilities of opposite nature, one from excessive equity, the other from lack thereof. The unstable subsector can result in further financial distress and even trigger a financial crisis. The market instability indicator, an early warning system derived from dynamical systems applied to agent-based models, is used to analyze the subsectoral financial instabilities. Detailed mathematical analysis is provided to explain what financial …

Inventory Model With Ramp-Type Demand And Price Discount On Back Order For Deteriorating Items Under Partial Backlogging, Sumit Saha, Nabendu Sen, Biman K. Nath

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Modeling of inventory problems provides a good insight to retailers and distributors to maintain stock of different items such as seasonal products, perishable goods and daily useable goods etc. The deterioration of all these items exists to a certain extent due to several reasons like mishandling, evaporation, decay, environmental conditions, transportation etc. It is found from the literature that previously many of the researchers have developed inventory model ignoring deterioration and drawn conclusion. In the absence of deterioration parameter, an inventory model cannot be completely realistic. In this paper, we have made an attempt to extend an inventory model with …
