Cost Effectiveness Of Recycling: A Systems Model, David J. Tonjes, Sreekanth Mallikarjun Jan 2013

Cost Effectiveness Of Recycling: A Systems Model, David J. Tonjes, Sreekanth Mallikarjun

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Financial analytical models of waste management systems have often found that recycling costs exceed direct benefits, and in order to economically justify recycling activities, externalities such as household expenses or environmental impacts must be invoked. Certain more empirically based studies have also found that recycling is more expensive than disposal. Other work, both through models and surveys, have found differently. Here we present an empirical systems model, largely drawn from a suburban Long Island municipality. The model accounts for changes in distribution of effort as recycling tonnages displace disposal tonnages, and the seven different cases examined all show that curbside …

Improved Dehydrogenation Properties Of The Combined Mg(Bh4) 2·6nh3-Nnh3bh3 System, Xiaowei Chen, Feng Yuan, Qinfen Gu, Yingbin Tan, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou, Xuebin Yu Jan 2013

Improved Dehydrogenation Properties Of The Combined Mg(Bh4) 2·6nh3-Nnh3bh3 System, Xiaowei Chen, Feng Yuan, Qinfen Gu, Yingbin Tan, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A combined strategy via mixing Mg(BH4)2·6NH3 with ammonia borane (AB) is employed to improve the dehydrogenation properties of Mg(BH4)2·6NH3. The combined system shows a mutual dehydrogenation improvement in terms of dehydrogenation temperature and hydrogen purity compared to the individual components. A further improved hydrogen liberation from the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB is achieved with the assistance of ZnCl2, which plays a crucial role in stabilizing the NH3 groups and promoting the recombination of NHδ+⋯HBδ−. Specifically, the Mg(BH4)2·6NH3–6AB/ZnCl2 (with a mole ratio of 1:0.5) composite is shown to release over 7 wt.% high-pure hydrogen (>99 mol%) at 95 °C within 10 min, thereby …

Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem In An Isolated System Of Quantum Dipolar Bosons After A Quench, Ehsan Khatami, Guido Pupillo, Mark Srednicki, Marcos Rigol Jan 2013

Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem In An Isolated System Of Quantum Dipolar Bosons After A Quench, Ehsan Khatami, Guido Pupillo, Mark Srednicki, Marcos Rigol

Ehsan Khatami

We examine the validity of fluctuation-dissipation relations in isolated quantum systems taken out of equilibrium by a sudden quench. We focus on the dynamics of trapped hard-core bosons in one-dimensional lattices with dipolar interactions whose strength is changed during the quench. We find indications that fluctuation-dissipation relations hold if the system is nonintegrable after the quench, as well as if it is integrable after the quench if the initial state is an equilibrium state of a nonintegrable Hamiltonian. On the other hand, we find indications that they fail if the system is integrable both before and after quenching.

Water Level Dynamics Of The North American Great Lakes: Nonlinear Scaling And Fractional Bode Analysis Of A Self-Affine Time Series, Jeffrey Ralph Smigelski Jan 2013

Water Level Dynamics Of The North American Great Lakes: Nonlinear Scaling And Fractional Bode Analysis Of A Self-Affine Time Series, Jeffrey Ralph Smigelski

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Time series that exhibit multiple scaling properties in the frequency domain are common in natural systems (e.g., temperature through geologic time). NOAA verified hourly water level data ranging from 20 to 30 years in duration for nine stations in the North American Great Lakes is converted to the frequency domain using a complex discrete fast Fourier transform (FFT) and then expressed as a power spectrum in terms of frequency versus power. To quantify power law scaling behavior, a scaling exponent (β) is determined by fitting a power function to a log-log plot of frequency (f) or …

Physics Faculty Publications

Beam asymmetries for the reactions ˠp -> pπ0 and ˠp -> nπ+have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged, linearly polarized photon beam with energies from 1.102-1.862 GeV. A Fourier moment technique for extracting beam asymmetries from experimental data is described. The results reported here possess greater precision and finer energy resolution than previous measurements. Our data for both pion reactions appear to favor the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina scattering analyses over the older Mainz MAID predictions. After incorporating the present set of beam asymmetries into the world database, exploratory fits made with …

Cross Sections For The Ɣp → K*+Ʌ And Ɣp → K*+Σº Reactions Measured At Clas, K.P. Adhikari, M. J. Amaryan, C. E. Hyde, S. Koirala, M. Mayer, Clas Collaboration Jan 2013

Cross Sections For The Ɣp → K*+Ʌ And Ɣp → K*+Σº Reactions Measured At Clas, K.P. Adhikari, M. J. Amaryan, C. E. Hyde, S. Koirala, M. Mayer, Clas Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

The first high-statistics cross sections for the reactions ɣp → K*+Ʌ and ɣp → K*+Σº were measured using the CLAS detector at photon energies between threshold and 3.9 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Differential cross sections are presented over the full range of the center-of-mass angles, and then fitted to Legendre polynomials to extract the total cross section. Results for the K*+Ʌ final state are compared with two different calculations in an isobar and a Regge model, respectively. Theoretical calculations significantly underestimate the K*+Ʌ total cross sections between 2.1 and 2.6 GeV, but are in better agreement …

Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher Dec 2012

Electronic Health Record System Evaluation Based On Patient Safety, Yung-Yu Su, Khin Than Win, John A. Fulcher

Dr Khin Win

After describing the general characteristics of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), we consider patient safety. We then proceed to discuss IS evaluation in general terms, followed by HIS system evaluation in particular. The D&M IS Success model, Technology Acceptance model and Task-Technology Fit model are considered as potential candidates for EHR System evaluation. Based upon a critical review of the available literature, we draw some conclusions about the appropriateness of current HIS/EHR evaluation approaches. Finally, we suggest that by incorporating patient safety attributes in any EHR System evaluation framework, then this could lead to improved accuracy, and in turn improved patient …

A Car Detection System Based On Hierarchical Visual Features, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum

Dr Fok Hing Chi Tivive

In this paper, we address the problem of detecting and localizing cars in still images. The proposed car detection system is based on a hierarchical feature detector in which the processing units are shunting inhibitory neurons. To reduce the training time and complexity of the network, the shunting inhibitory neurons in the first layer are implemented as directional nonlinear filters, whereas the neurons in the second layer have trainable parameters. A multi-resolution processing scheme is implemented so as to detect cars of different sizes, and to reduce the number of false positives during the detection stage, an adaptive thresholding strategy …

Understanding The Conducting States Of Active And Passive Switches In An Inverter Circuit Used For Power System Applications, Danny Sutanto, B.P. Divakar, K.W.E. Cheng

Professor Darmawan Sutanto

Bi-directional inverter circuits are commonly used in many applications in power systems, such as in FACTS devices, energy storage systems and active power filters. Many power engineering students however find it difficult to understand the conducting states of the active switches (transistors, IGBTs) and the passive switches (the antiparallel diodes connected across the active switches). It seems a mystery to them that power can flow from a lower voltage ac system to a higher voltage dc system to charge the energy storage system. This paper proposes a simple chart that intuitively explains how to determine the states (either conducting or …

A Real-Time Facial Expression Recognition System For Online Games, Ce Zhan, Wanqing Li, Philip Ogunbona, Farzad Safaei

Associate Professor Wanqing Li

Multiplayer online games (MOGs) have become increasingly popular because of the opportunity they provide for collaboration, communication, and interaction. However, compared with ordinary human communication, MOG still has several limitations, especially in communication using facial expressions. Although detailed facial animation has already been achieved in a number of MOGs, players have to use text commands to control the expressions of avatars. In this paper, we propose an automatic expression recognition system that can be integrated into an MOG to control the facial expressions of avatars. To meet the specific requirements of such a system, a number of algorithms are studied, …

Face To Face Communications In Multiplayer Online Games: A Real-Time System, Ce Zhan, Wanqing Li, Farzad Safaei, Philip Ogunbona

Associate Professor Wanqing Li

Multiplayer online games (MOG) bring HCI into a new era of human-human interactions in computer world. Although current MOG provide more interactivity and social interaction in the virtual world, natural facial expression as a key factor in emulating face to face communications has been neglected by game designers. In this work, we propose a real-time automatic system to recognize players’ facial expressions, so that the recognition results can be used to drive the MOG’s “facial expression engine” instead of “text commands”. Our major contributions are the evaluation, improvement and efficient implementation of existing algorithms to build a real-time system that …

Grounding Locations Assessment Of Practical Power System, Nadheer Shalash, Ahmed M. Haidar, Abdul Sattar

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

Grounding Points (GPs) are installed in electrical power system to drive protective devices and accomplish the person- nel safety. The general grounding problem is to find the optimal locations of these points so that the security and reli- ability of power system can be improved. This paper presents a practical approach to find the optimal location of GPs based on the ratios of zero sequence reactance with positive sequence reactance (X0/X1), zero sequence resistance with positive sequence reactance (R0/X1) and Ground Fault Factor (GFF). The optimal values of these indicators were deter- mined by considering several scenarios of fault disturbances …

Neural Network Prediction Of Electromagnetic Field Strength In Hybrid Micro-Grid System, Ahmed Haidar, Ibrahim Ahmed, Ahmed Abdalla

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

Location of any Hybrid Micro-Grid System requires efficiently prediction of the electromagnetic field strength. This study proposes a novel Electromagnetic Field Strength (EFS) predication based on Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN). Learning data sets have been generated using Electromagnetic Transients Program EMTP. The PNN model has three input nodes representing the Switching Distance, Busbar Interference Voltage and Current waveforms, the output node representing the EFS. Testing datasets have deliberately been chosen outside the region of the learning datasets so as to check the performance of the neural network. The results indicate that the proposed technique can be used successfully to detect …

Vulnerability Control Of Large Scale Interconnected Power System Using Neuro-Fuzzy Load Shedding Approach, Ahmed Haidar, Azah Mohamed, Aini Hussain

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

Vulnerability control is becoming an essential requirement for security of power systems in the new utility environment. It is a difficult task for system operator who under economic pressure may be reluctant to take preventive action against harmful contingencies in order to guarantee providing continued service. For power systems which are operated closer to their stability limits, it is desirable to use load shedding as a form of vulnerability control strategy. This paper presents a neuro-fuzzy approach for determining the amount of load to be shed in order to avoid a cascading outage. The objective is to develop fast and …

This paper presents the application of Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) for vulnerability assessment of power system incorporating a new proposed feature extraction method named as the Neural Network Weight Extraction (NNWE) for dimensionality reduction of input data. The performance of the RBFNN is compared with the Multi Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) so as to evaluate the effectiveness of the RBFNN in assessing the vulnerability of a power system based on the indices, power system …

New Method Vulnerability Assessment Of Power System, Ahmed Haidar, Azah Mohamed, Aini Hussain Dec 2012

New Method Vulnerability Assessment Of Power System, Ahmed Haidar, Azah Mohamed, Aini Hussain

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

Vulnerability assessment in power systems is to determine a power system`s ability to continue to provide service in case of an unforeseen catastrophic contingency. It combines information on the level of system security as well as information on a wide range of scenarios, events and contingencies. To assess the level of system strength or weakness relative to the occurrence of an undesired event, a quantitative measure based on vulnerability index is often considered. In this study, a new vulnerability assessment method is proposed based on total power system loss which considers power generation loss due to generation outage, power line …

Transient Stability Evaluation Of Electrical Power System Using Generalized Regression Neural Networks, Ahmed Haidar, M Mustafa, Faisal Ibrahim, Ibrahim Ahmed

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

Transient stability evaluation (TSE) is part of dynamic security assessment of power systems, which involves the evaluation of the system’s ability to remain in equilibrium under credible contingencies. Neural networks (NN) have been applied to the security assessment of power systems and have shown great potential for predicting the security of power systems. This paper proposes a generalized regression neural networks (GRNN) based classification for transient stability evaluation in power systems. In the proposed method, learning data sets have been generated using time domain simulation (TDS). TheGRNN input nodes representing the voltage magnitude for all buses, real and reactive powers …

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Haidar

One of the most popular issues in the future power distribution is the quality improvement of microgrid and the development of smart grid (SG). Many applications operating at the microgrid level can be considered as smart grid functions. This paper proposes the application of Fuzzy Logic (FL) technique within microgrid energy system based on the most modern power conditioning equipment devices such as Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This technique is working together with the microgrid to track the disturbance of the smart grid and improve the quality of the system with a high flexibility. Furthermore, a control methodology developed …

Development Of A Peer-To-Peer Information Sharing System Using Ontologies, Ghassan Beydoun, Graham Low, Numi Tran, Paul Bogg

Associate Professor Ghassan Beydoun

Most existing agent-oriented methodologies ignore system extensibility, interoperability and reusability issues. Ontologies have been found to play a significant role in facilitating interoperability, reusability, MAS development activities (including MAS analysis and agent knowledge modeling) and MAS run-time operation (including agent communication and reasoning). However, most of the existing AOSE methodologies do not provide support for ontology-based MAS development. We present software engineering requirements for ontology-based development for MAS and examine an existing methodology, MOBMAS - a "Methodology for Ontology-Based MASs", which makes use of ontologies as a modeling tool. In this examination, we highlight how MOBMAS can be extended to …

Dynamic Modelling Of Hydroelectric Turbine-Generator Unit Connected To A Hvdc System For Small Signal Stability Analysis, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Kashem Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky

Dr Ashish Agalgaonkar

This paper presents the linearised small-signal dynamic modelling of hydroelectric turbine-generator (TG) unit with CIGRE first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) benchmark system in the synchronously rotating D-Q reference frame for small-signal stability analysis. The interaction behaviour between the hydroelectric unit and the dynamics and control of HVDC system is investigated utilising eigen-analysis,participation factor analysis and by conducting sensitivity studies. The computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for small signal stability analysis provides an invaluable insight onto the power system dynamic behaviour by characterising the damping and frequency of the system oscillatory modes. Theconsequences of different operating conditions, such as active and …

Dr Ashish Agalgaonkar

The application of renewable distributed generation (DG) could be considered as an alternative approach for distribution system expansion planning not only to reduce power loss and carbon emission, but also to improve system voltage profile. This paper investigates technical aspects relatedto voltage support and loss reduction in distribution systems with distributed wind and solar generation. The probabilistic wind, solar, and load models have been developed in order to address uncertain nature of wind speed, solar radiation, and load demand. Investigations have been carried out using Monte Carlo based probabilistic load flow analysis to estimate the probability distributions of system state …

Ontology-Based Knowledge Representation For A P2p Multi-Agent Distributed Intrusion Detection System, Dayong Ye, Quan Bai, Minjie Zhang

Associate Professor Minjie Zhang

Many research efforts on application of ontology in network security have been done in the past decade. However, they mostly stop at initial proposal or focus on framework design without detailed representation of intrusion or attack and relevant detection knowledge with ontology. In this paper, the design and implementation of ontology-based knowledge representation for a peer-to-peer multi-agent distributed intrusion detection system (ontology-based MADIDS) are introduced. An example which demonstrates the representation of an attack with ontology and the relevant detection process is also presented. In ontology-Based MADIDS, ontology technique enables peers in the system and agents in one peer to …

Design An Automatic Appointment System To Improve Patient Access To Primary Health Care, Hongxiang Hu, Ping Yu, Jun Yan

Dr Ping Yu

Advanced Access model has been introduced in general practice in the United States to improve patient access to primary health care services for more than ten years. It has brought in the benefits of eliminating service provider’s waiting lists, improving patients’ timely access to services and reducing no-show rate. However, to implement this model, practices need to collect relevant information, develop contingency plans and set up practice strategies to balance the provision of care and patient’s demand. These tasks are not always easy to achieve. Understanding the requirements and constraints for effective management of patient booking is essential for developing …
