How Deep Is The Irrationalism In The Science?, Pal R. Molnar

In the last decades a strong skeptic movement started against the para-sciences or irrationalism. We welcome this endeavor and we would like to extend the target of this movement into the field of scientific irrationalism too. In this article we try to discuss some of the clear and evident contradiction in the physics. Most of these problems were published in the last 20 years [1], and here we try to collect the biggest and stunk bugs. With this paper we try to break out the wall of silence about the inner problems of scientific world view. We believe that the …

Wireless networking has become an extremely common household technology in a matter of only a few years. Concerns for privacy have become more relevant than ever, with more cases of identity and data theft occurring everyday. Initially, consumer grade wireless technology was distributed without security being a major concern. Today, almost every consumer grade wireless router comes with either “out-of-the-box” encryption or with relatively easy to follow instructions on how to properly secure the household wireless infrastructure. In this paper we investigate wireless technology and the implications related to the privacy of the average user.

Tuberculosis Screening For International Students At A Midwestern Liberal Arts College, Grace Goetzke, Victor Addona, Chad M. Topaz
Chad M. Topaz
Participants: 318 international students at Macalester College screened for latent tuberculosis infection via tuberculin skin tests (TST) from 2004-2008. Objective: To estimate positive TST probability based on countries of residency and history of BCG vaccination. Methods and Results: 52% of students had a positive TST. Logistic regression modeling shows that a positive TST is insignificantly correlated with history of BCG vaccination (p=0.910) but is significantly negatively correlated with residence in the European Union (p=0.00502) and the Middle East (p=0.00451), and positively correlated with residence in North America (p=0.00151). Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between TST result and residence in …

Helical tomotherapy (HT) is a novel technique to deliver intensity modulated radiation therapy guided by 3D megavoltage CT imaging. The purpose of our study is to assess the dosimetric parameters related to HT and 3DCRT in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Eleven patients from the London Regional Cancer Centre and the Cross Cancer Institute with NSCLC underwent individualized treatment planning on both HT and 3DCRT. Corresponding HT and 3DCRT plans for each patient were analyzed using dose-volume histograms for GTV, PTV (median dose 60Gy/30 fractions), and critical structures (lung V5-30, esophageal V50-60, and spinal cord D1). Observed differences in …

Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott
George H Baker
No critical infrastructure is self-sufficient. The complexity inherent in the interdependent nature of infrastructure systems complicates planning and preparedness for system failures. Recent wide-scale disruption of infrastructure on the Gulf Coast due to weather, and in the Northeast due to electric power network failures, dramatically illustrate the problems associated with mitigating cascading effects and responding to cascading infrastructure failures once they have occurred.
The major challenge associated with preparedness for cascading failures is that they transcend system, corporate, and political boundaries and necessitate coordination among multiple, disparate experts and authorities. This symposium brought together concerned communities including government and industry …

Aims.We report on observations of the eclipsing and interacting binary beta Lyrae from the Suzaku X-ray telescope. This system involves an early B star embedded in an optically and geometrically thick disk that is siphoning atmospheric gases from a less massive late B II companion.
Methods.Motivated by an unpublished X-ray spectrum from the Einstein X-ray telescope suggesting unusually hard emission, we obtained time with Suzaku for pointings at three different phases within a single orbit.
Results. From the XIS detectors, the softer X-ray emission appears typical of an early-type star. What is surprising is the remarkably unchanging character …

Objectives: Current treatment guidelines recommend immediate modification of antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected individuals with incomplete viral suppression. These recommendations have not been tested in observational studies or large randomized trials. We evaluated the consequences of delayed modification following virologic failure. Design/methods: We used prospective data from two clinical cohorts to estimate the effect of time until regimen modification following first regimen failure on all-cause mortality. The impact of regimen type was also assessed. As the effect of delayed switching can be confounded if patients with a poor prognosis modify therapy earlier than those with a good prognosis, we used a …

Electrical power systems play a critical role in spacecraft and aircraft. This paper discusses our development of a diagnostic capability for an electrical power system testbed, ADAPT, using probalistic techniques. In the context of ADAPT, we present two challenges, regarding modelling and real-time performance, often encountered in real-world diagnostic applications. To meet the modelling challenge, we discuss our novel high-level specification language which supports auto-generation of Bayesian networks. To meet the real-time challenge, we compile Bayesian networks intro arithmetic circuits. Arithmetic circuits typically have small footprints and are optimized for the real-time avionics systems found in spacecraft and aircraft. Using …

The Crowding Approach To Niching In Genetic Algorithms, Ole J. Mengshoel, David E. Goldberg
Ole J Mengshoel
A wide range of niching techniques have been investigated in evolutionary and genetic algorithms. In this article, we focus on niching using crowding techniques in the context of what we call local tournament algorithms. In addition to deterministic and probabilistic crowding, the family of local tournament algorithms includes the Metropolis algorithm, simulated annealing, restricted tournament selection, and parallel recombinative simulated annealing. We describe an algorithmic and analytical framework which is applicable to a wide range of crowding algorithms. As an example of utilizing this framework, we present and analyze the probabilistic crowding niching algorithm. Like the closely related deterministic crowding …

The Formation Of Sporadic E Layers By A Vortical Perturbation Excited In A Horizontal Wind Shear Flow, G. G. Didebulidze, Levan Lomidze
Levan Lomidze
The formation of the mid-latitude sporadic E layers (Es layers) by an atmospheric vortical perturbation excited in a horizontal shear flow (horizontal wind with a horizontal linear shear) is investigated. A three-dimensional atmospheric vortical perturbation (atmospheric shear waves), whose velocity vector is in the horizontal plane and has a vertical wavenumber kz≠0, can provide a vertical shear of the horizontal wind. The shear waves influence the vertical transport of heavy metallic ions and their convergence into thin and dense horizontal layers. The proposed mechanism takes into account the dynamical influence of the shear wave velocity in the horizontal wind on …

Different Long-Term Trends Of The Oxygen Red 630.0 Nm Line Nightglow Intensity As The Result Of Lowering The Ionosphere F2 Layer, N. B. Gudadze, G. G. Didebulidze, Levan Lomidze, G. Sh. Javakhishvili, M. A. Marsagishvili, M. Todua
Levan Lomidze
Long-term observations of total nightglow intensity of the atomic oxygen red 630.0 nm line at Abastumani (41.75° N, 42.82° E) in 1957–1993 and measurements of the ionosphere F2 layer parameters from the Tbilisi ionosphere station (41.65° N, 44.75° E) in 1963–1986 have been analyzed. It is shown that a decrease in the long-term trend of the mean annual red 630.0 nm line intensity from the pre-midnight value (+0.770±1.045 R/year) to its minimum negative value (−1.080±0.670 R/year) at the midnight/after midnight is a possible result of the observed lowering of the peak height of the ionosphere F2 layer electron density hmF2 …
