Mandibular organs of the mud crab, Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were histologically located and followed throughout the larval cycle to determine their role in metamorphosis. Specimens from each day of the four larval stages and the megalopa stage were embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 8 μm, stained and observed under the microscope for the mandibular organs. The organs were located in the mandibular area of second, third and fourth stage larvae. The organs were probably present in the first stage zoeae and in the megalopa stage, although the

Paleoecological analysis of a 2.3 m sediment core from Big Run Bog, Tucker County, West Virginia (39° 07'N, 79° 35'W), provides an integrated and continuous record of vegetation change for the Allegheny Plateau of the central Appalachians for the past 17,000 yr from the full-glacial conditions of the Wisconsin through Holocene. Big Run Bog (980 m elevation) is high-elevation wetland within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province.

The synthesis of phenyl carbamate from urea, phenol, and Lewis acid was attempted with varied results being observed. The proposed reaction mechanism involves and Acyl-2 type reaction with a nucleophilic attack on urea by phenol. The Lewis acid is present to add carbocation character to the urea and to further complex with by-products, thus driving the reaction to completion. The solvents utilized were isopropyl alcohol, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran. The reaction parameters were varied in an effort to successfully run a reaction mechanism. The kinetics of hydrolysis of ∝-bromopropionic acid were investigated at 80° and a constant pH of 3.3. An average first order rate constant of 4.74x10-3 min-1 was determined. This hydrolysis reaction has been studied by several workers. It is unique in that the reaction proceeds through inversion reactions, the first involving the carboxylate ion. This paper covers the first study where the pH of the system was maintained constant. The design if an inexpensive pH-stat for this purpose is given. The base promoted hydrolysis, saponification, of several esters of pivalic acid (trimethyl acetic acid – C (CH3)3COOH) has been studied. Kinetic studies were performed and a possible mechanism for the reactions is proposed. The saponification of esters has been well studied. Ingold1 proposes three possible mechanisms for the reaction; Bac2, Bal1, and Bal2. The B stands for base promoted, the ac and al for acyl oxygen cleavage or alkyl oxygen cleavage, respectively, and the 1 or 2 for first or second order kinetics.

The number of epithecal (external) growth lines was surveyed over 124 days for Montastrea annularis growing at different depths (3.5 m to 61 m). There was a significant (P< .01) decrease in the number of lines with depth. Although the linear regression is significant, there is evidence for a logarithmic or quadratic relationship, and more data from greater depths are needed to determine which of these gives a better fit.

The number of growth lines formed during light-dark cycles of 16, 24 and 32 hours were compared for M. annularis, M. cavernosa, Porites astreoides and Tubastrea aurea. The variability among colonies from the same species was in many cases more significant than that among light treatments. This is a serious problem for anyone counting lines in corals, especially from a few specimens; therefore conclusions based on such counts seem hazardous on …

One type of system suitable for oxygen detection in aqueous solutions is based on two distinct emission bands: one band oxygen-sensitive, the other insensitive to oxygen quenching. By taking the ratio of these bands, a quantitative measurement of the oxygen present could be obtained. The first excited triplet state (TI state) of aromatic hydrocarbons such as phenanthrene acts as an intermediate in many chemical and photochemical reactions. The TI state is a metastable state and its lifetime can be measured in terms of its decay to the ground state. The duration of this decay is on the order of microseconds. The study examined the correlation of maternal occupation, urinary tract infection, smoking, and working during pregnancy with infant birth weight and gestational age in order to generate baseline data for development of a health education intervention program protocol for pregnant women In the work place.

(1) The four maternal risk factors: (a) occupation during lifetime, (b) reported urinary tract infection, (c) cigarette smoking, (d) working, are individually and interactively correlated with infant birth weight and gestational age. The purpose of this study was to determine if a different incidence and severity of maxillary incisor apical root resorption occurs in cases treated with the 0.018 inch versus 0.022 inch slot in standard edgewise mechanics. The Buffalo Mountain thrust sheet, located along the western margin of the Blue Ridge structural province in northeastern Tennessee, provides an excellent opportunity to examine transitional structural styles and deformational mechanisms between the Valley and Ridge and Blue Ridge.

The Buffalo Mountain sheet is composed of a sequence of Lower Cambrian Chilhowee Group elastics that have been thrust over Upper Cambrian Conasauga Group shales and Cambre- Ordovician Knox Group carbonates. This study examined the effects of phenolic compounds on the populations in mixed liquors obtained from two very different treatment plants: the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners plant in Newark, and the Livingston, NJ municipal treatment plant. The dominant organisms were identified initially and after ten days exposure to phenol (100 ppm), and either 2-chlorophenol (20 ppm) or 2,6-dichlorophenol (10 ppm) in aerated batch reactors.

Results confirmed the remarkable similarity between the two mixed liquor populations, in spite of the significant differences in the operation of the two treatment plants.

This paper describes a Macintosh application which acts as a front-end to Unix mail. Features of the Macintosh interface such as icons, menus, and windows replace the command driven interface. Complicated editing commands are replaced with mouse selection and cut, copy, and paste. Message can be composed of text, pictures, and any Macintosh file, because they are encoded into plain text, sent through the mail system,and then unencoded by the receiving end. The designs of the mail server and communications interface are such that mail servers and communications other than Unix mail and a serial line may be easily implemented.

The Fountain Landslide located along I-84, five kilometers east of Cascade Locks, Oregon has moved periodically for over thirty years. Aerial photographs taken prior to recorded movement of the landslide show the headscarp of a large preexisting landslide. In 1952 a cut was made into the toe of the landslide to straighten Highway 30. The recorded movement history begins at this time. Stabilization procedures in the late 1950's focused on dewatering the slide mass. Movement had nearly stopped by 1957. The nation's fishery management regime has three primary sets of players: the scientific advisors, the managers, and the fishermen. The advisors include federal agencies, state agencies, universities, regional and interstate bodies, and international bodies. The National Marie Fisheries Service (NMFS) has the lead role as scientific advisor. As used here "management" is defined broadly to include the instructions and funding that the researchers are given. "Fisheries research" is also defined broadly for the purposes of this paper. This study explored how recreation specialization and different types of motivations were related to environmental settings preferred by backcountry hikers. A questionnaire was developed that measured the level of hiking specialization, desired psychological outcomes, and preferred environmental setting attributes. Questionnaires were mailed to 619 backcountry hikers from three Intermountain West hiking areas; a response rate of 68 percent was attained.

Results of the study revealed significant associations between the level of hiking specialization and the psychological states desired by backcountry hikers. In general, increased hiking specialization served to increase the importance of specific psychological outcomes such as autonomy, exercise, achievement …

Recent carbonate sediments from (133-236m) on the northern Jamaican island slope are significantly different from shallower reef zones (l-70m) in grain constituents, textural parameters, and foraminiferal assemblages. The island slope sediment is dominated by coral fragments, calcareous algae, Halimeda plates, and foraminiferal tests. The sediment is characteristically poorly-sorted, nearly-symmetrically skewed, and mesokurtic, with a mean grain size in the fine sand range. Mineralogically, the sediment is predominantly aragonite (66%) and high-Mg calcite (22%), with some calcite (8%), and minor amounts of clays and other insoluble minerals (4%).

The Ute Formation of Middle Cambrian age is the oldest exposed stratigraphic unit. Other Cambrian units, in ascending order, are: Blacksmith Formation, Bloomington Formation, Nounan Formation, and St. Charles Formation. Petrographic and SEM study of flu vial-deltaic sections of the Woodbine Group in the East Texas Basin indicates that authigenic mineral suites are controlled, in part, by the presence of organic-rich matrix.

During early, precompaction diagenesis, organic matter supplied the metabolic fuel required by sulfate-reducing bacteria to reduce sulfate in depositional waters ultimately to pyrite. With burial the sulfate supply was ultimately exhausted, and bicarbonate activity thereafter controlled the precipitation of siderite and Fe-calcite.

The program can be used to run existing models or as a development tool to produce immediate prototypic computer simulations through synergistic man-machine interactions.

Hansel Valley, located at the north end of the Great Salt Lake in Box Elder County, Utah, has exposures of the lacustrine sediments of the Little Valley, Bonneville, and Gilbert lake cycles. A 1:50,000 scale map was constructed of the surface geology. Although no trenches were dug for this study, about 240m of logs were compiled in an arroyo in lake bottom sediments. Eighteen field plots at 15 locations were selected throughout the state to evaluate the status of the boron content in irrigation waters, soils, and alfalfa (Medicago sativa) plant tissue under irrigated conditions.

No boron deficiency symptoms were observed in any of the alfalfa plants at any of these locations, nor were any of the plant tissue boron levels inadequate. Only two locations were found in which the alfalfa plants exibited toxicity symptoms. Throughout the James Ranges and Gardiner Range the Arumbera Sandstone forms prominent strike ridges with distinctive dark reddish slopes and pale red to orange-white cliffs. Because of their lithologic and stratigraphic similarities, the names Eninta and ''Quandong" for these units should be suppressed in favor of the name of Arumbera Sandstone, which has precedence. The stratigraphic and lithologic differences observed between the Quandong Conglomerate in the type locality and the Arumbera Sandstone in the study area suggest that these units are not equivalent. Similarites with the Areyonga Formation suggest the Quandong Conglomerate could be part of the Areyonga Formation.

We illustrate the methodologies of LIL proposed by Joseph Goguen and Justify the use of such a specification languages using analogy programming originally proposed by Nachum Dershowitz. The work in these areas is new and noticeably incomplete.
