Shoreline Recession: Past, Present, And Future, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Brian S. Sandberg Jan 1986

Shoreline Recession: Past, Present, And Future, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Brian S. Sandberg

Theses and Dissertations

Shoreline erosion is a major problem at Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. Instrumentation along the eastern shore was initiated in 1983 to measure shoreline recession and determine the processes responsible, with the ultimate goal being the development of a relatively simple equation to predict the rate of recession which is better than the model currently used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

For the twenty stations, the present rate of recession ranges from 0.2 to 4.3 m/y. Approximately 78 percent of the yearly recession occurs during the warm months (May-October) due to wave erosion. Erosion over the cold months occurs …

Petrology, Mineralogy, And Geochemistry Of The Goldlund Gold Deposit, Northwestern Ontario, Steven D. Giddings Jan 1986

Petrology, Mineralogy, And Geochemistry Of The Goldlund Gold Deposit, Northwestern Ontario, Steven D. Giddings

Theses and Dissertations

The Goldlund Mine is located in the Wabigoon Sub province of the Canadian Shield. Although the mine has been open sporadically since the late 1930's, little is known about the geochemistry and petrography of the deposit. The purpose of this study was to use petro graphic, geochemical, and physical data to document and better understand the host rock, alteration, and mineral ization of the deposit, and to develop a generalized model of formation.

Results showed that the host rocks of the gold mineral ization are albitized tonalite dikes. Gold, in native form and in gold-silver tellurides, occurs in quartz veins …

Geology, Hydrology And Hydrogeochemistry Of The West Brush Creek Development Area, Beulah Mine, Mercer County, North Dakota, Gary D. Winbourn Jan 1986

Geology, Hydrology And Hydrogeochemistry Of The West Brush Creek Development Area, Beulah Mine, Mercer County, North Dakota, Gary D. Winbourn

Theses and Dissertations

The West Brush Creek Development Area, a part of the Beulah Mine, occupies a rolling upland approximately 7 kilometres southwest of Beulah in west-central North Dakota. This study describes the geology, hydrology, and hydrogeochemistry of an 8 km2 area which is scheduled for strip mine development, and addresses the potential impacts of mining on the local hydrologic and hydrogeochemical regime.

Four previously recognized stratigraphic intervals in the Paleocene Sentinel Butte Formation were described and correlated. They are, from oldest to youngest, the Spaer, Beulah-Zap, Schoolhouse and Twin Buttes intervals, each named for the lignite bed which caps the interval. The …

Electrochemical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature, Ph, And Electrolyte On The Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cytochrome C, Kent Brian Koller Jan 1986

Electrochemical Investigation Of The Effects Of Temperature, Ph, And Electrolyte On The Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cytochrome C, Kent Brian Koller

Theses and Dissertations

Spectroelectrochemical and electrochemical methods have been used to investigate the characteristics of heterogeneous electron transfer between cytochrome c and indium oxide electrodes. Direct electron transfer between cytochrome c and solid electrodes is of interest due to the interfacial character of electron transfer between the protein and its membrane-bound physiological redox partners. The conformation of ferricytochrome c is affected more by changes in temperature or pH than is its reduced form, ferrocytochrome c. This difference in conformational stability is attributed to the +1 charge of the heme in ferricytochrome c that is largely embedded in the hydrophobic interior of the enzyme. …

Tidal Circulation In Chesapeake Bay, Carl W. Fisher Jan 1986

Tidal Circulation In Chesapeake Bay, Carl W. Fisher

OES Theses and Dissertations

This study is a comprehensive examination of the tidal circulation of Chesapeake Bay and its major tributaries. Tide and current data, which were observed in Chesapeake Bay by the National Ocean Service during the period from 1972 to 1983, are analyzed and used to construct charts that describe the tide and tidal current. Frictionally damped analytic models are used to: explain the tidal hydrodynamics of the observed tides, determine the location of the quasinodes and antinodes of the M2 and K1 tidal waves, explain the relationship of the tides and tidal currents, and determine if the tide in …

Electrochemical Studies Of Transition Metal Carbonyls, Dwayne Edward Cooper Jan 1986

Electrochemical Studies Of Transition Metal Carbonyls, Dwayne Edward Cooper

Masters Theses

The electrochemical oxidation of (OC)5MP-PM'(CO)5 (M=Cr, Mo, W; M'=Cr, Mo, W; M=M' or M≠M'; P-P=Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2) and the reduction of the oxidized products in a 0.1 M tetrabutyl-ammonium perchlorate methylene chloride solution at a platinum disc working electrode with a Ag/AgCl reference electrode have been studied. The number of electrons in the oxidation step was determined by comparison with the one electron oxidation of ferrocene which had a peak potential at +0.15 V.

The cyclic voltammograms of the homobimetallic and heterobimetallic complexes display two general chacteristics: quasi-reversible or irreversible one …

Synthesis Of Phosphine Trans-Substituted Derivatives Of Iron Pentacarbonyl, Karl Heinz Hecker Jan 1986

Synthesis Of Phosphine Trans-Substituted Derivatives Of Iron Pentacarbonyl, Karl Heinz Hecker

Masters Theses

The synthesis of trans-Fe (CO)3(PR3)2 (PR3 = PPh3, PPh2Me, PPh2CHCH2, P(c-C6H11)3, P(n-C4H9)3, PPh2H) can be achieved by refluxing iron pentacarbonyl under reducing conditions in the presence of ligand in 1-butanol. Addition of iron pentacarbonyl to a 1-butanol solution of sodium borohydride at room temperature results in a quantitative conversion of the iron carbonyl complex to the corresponding mononuclear formyl complex. Upon heating the initially formed formyl species decomposes to form the …

Characterization Of The Capsular Polysaccharides On Cell Membranes Of Rhizobium Trifolii And Three Of Its Nod- Mutants, Jesse Ardosa Jan 1986

Characterization Of The Capsular Polysaccharides On Cell Membranes Of Rhizobium Trifolii And Three Of Its Nod- Mutants, Jesse Ardosa

Masters Theses

The ever-present specter of the inavailability of food production to increase in direct proportion to population growth haunts practically every nation of the world. As more and more tracts of land are incorporated to accommodate expanding cities, they become less available for food production. Emphasis, therefore, is placed on obtaining a higher yield per acreage planted. Since fertilization is not reliable in the long term due to an eventual depletion of raw materials for fertilizers, the ability of plants like legumes to assimilate free soil nitrogen on their own has become increasingly important [1,11,14,17]. However, the mechanisms involved are still …

A surfactant selective electrode using a PVC membrane was constructed. A surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene-sulfonate)-H2O system was studied at 15°, 19°, 25°, and 40°C with the PVC electrodes, a Na+ selective electrode, and a conductivity bridge. Pre-micelle regions at the above temparatures were observed. The critical micelle concentrations (CMCb) obtained by the PVC electrodes in salt-free systems are: 1.63x10-3 M at 15°C, 1.48x10-3 M at 19.1°C, 1.52x10-3 M at 25°C, and 1.73x10-3 M at 41.6°C. The CMC'c obtained by the Na+ electrode are: 1.62x10-3 M at 15°C, 1.37x10-3 M …

Enhancement Of Ether Cleaving Reactions By Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding, Nobumi Takemura Jan 1986

Enhancement Of Ether Cleaving Reactions By Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding, Nobumi Takemura

Masters Theses

Rate constants of cleavages of fourteen alkyl-aryl ethers with HI, KI, or LiI in pyridine at 50-150°C were determined under pseudo first order conditions. The following ethers which have a six-membered ring intramolecular hydrogen bond underwent a bimolecular nucleophilic displacement by iodide ion in pyridine: 8-methoxy-1-naphthalenol, 8-ethoxy-1-naphthalenol, 2-methoxybenzoic acid, and 2-hydroxybenzyl methyl ether. The following ethers which lack a six-membered ring hydrogen bond were not cleaved or underwent cleavage slowly compared with the hydrogen bonded compounds: 1,8-dimethoxynaphthalene, 1,8-diethoxynaphthalene, 1-methoxynaphthalene, 4-methoxybenzoic acid, methyl 2-methoxybenzoate, 2-methoxybenzyl methyl ether, and 4-methoxybenzyl methyl ether. The pattern of ether reactivity indicated that a six-membered ring …

Analysis Of The Charleston, Illinois Water Supply For The Presence Of Organic Mutagens Utilizing The Ames Salmonella/Microsome Assay, Steven Lee Washburn

Masters Theses

Water samples from the Charleston, Illinois water supply and selected agricultural run-off areas were tested for the presence of organic mutagenic chemicals. The Ames Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay utilizing strains TA98 and TA100 was used to analyze concentrated water samples. A special set of samples was exposed to the S9 activation system coupled with the TA98 strain to simulate the mammalian metabolic system.

No mutagens were detected in any of the samples tested. Several positive and negative control systems were included in the testing system. Negative control systems were used to determine the average spontaneous reversion rates for each strain for …

Stratigraphy And Heavy Mineral Analysis In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, C. R. Berquist Jr Jan 1986

Stratigraphy And Heavy Mineral Analysis In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, C. R. Berquist Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Spatially continuous patterns of heavy mineral distributions in three dimensions characterized the sandy Holocene sediments of the lower Chesapeake Bay. A pilot study using Q-mode factor analysis on data from an earlier study determined mineral assemblages and mineral composition gradients; the gradients suggested that surficial sediments entered the Bay from offshore and from older deposits to the west. Principal components analysis of the same data indicated that the abundances of only 5 out of 21 minerals were adequate to explain most of the mineral variance. The mineralogy of 87 samples from cores defining two geologic cross-sections was added to the …

The Late Quaternary Evolution Of A Twin Barrier-Island Complex, Cape Charles, Virginia (Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Wisconsinan, Sea-Level Highstand), Kenneth. Finkelstein Jan 1986

The Late Quaternary Evolution Of A Twin Barrier-Island Complex, Cape Charles, Virginia (Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Wisconsinan, Sea-Level Highstand), Kenneth. Finkelstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A total of 68 vibra-cores and 14-box cores in conjunction with high-resolution seismic records are used to describe the late Quaternary development of a twin-barrier island complex. Based on the stratigraphy, radiocarbon dates, and microfossils, a transgressive outer Holocene and inner Pleistocene barrier island complex are recognized. The two subaerial sub-parallel barriers are a result of separate marine transgressions that occurred before and after late Wisconsin glaciation. Pollen assemblages and ten radiocarbon dates from the lagoonal sediments below the older island concur on a date of approximately 30,000 years B.P., hence a probable mid-Wisconsinan age for the overriding barrier island. …

Estimation In Truncated Exponential Family Of Distributions, Laxman M. Hegde Jan 1986

Estimation In Truncated Exponential Family Of Distributions, Laxman M. Hegde

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Estimating the parameters of a truncated distribution is a well known problem in statistical inference. The non-existence of the maximum likelihood estimator (m.l.e.) with positive probability in certain truncated distributions is not well known. To mention a few results in the literature:

(i) Deemer and Votaw 1955 show that the maximum likelihood estimator does not exist in a truncated negative exponential distribution on 0,T , T > 0 known, whenever the sample mean x (GREATERTHEQ) T/2.

(ii) Broeder 1955 shows that the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter of a truncated gamma distribution, with the shape parameter being known, becomes …

The Role Of Science And Scientists In Marine Environmental Policy And Management, Teny Topalian Jan 1986

The Role Of Science And Scientists In Marine Environmental Policy And Management, Teny Topalian

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The role of science and scientists in environmental policy and management is and has been an important, complex, and controversial subject for many years. The objective of this study is to determine how science and scientists interact in environmental policy formation and management and how science is or could be used in the development of policy which can ultimately be used as a basis for effective resource management plans. In the very broad sense this study attempts to evaluate the general hypothesis that "Scientists do not play a role in promoting or encouraging science as a means of changing attitudes …
