The hippocampus is a crucial brain structure involved in memory formation, spatial navigation, emotional regulation, and learning. An accurate MRI image segmentation of the human hippocampus plays an important role in multiple neuro-imaging research and clinical practice, such as diagnosing neurological diseases and guiding surgical interventions. While most hippocampus segmentation studies focus on using T1-weighted or T2-weighted MRI scans, we explore the use of diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI), which offers unique insights into the microstructural properties of the hippocampus. Particularly, we utilize various anisotropy measures derived from diffusion MRI (dMRI), including fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity, for …

Advancements in artificial intelligence continue to impact nearly every aspect of human life by providing integration options that aim to supplement or improve current processes. One industry that continues to benefit from artificial intelligence integration is healthcare. For years now, elements of artificial intelligence have been used to assist in clinical decision making, helping to identify potential health risks at earlier stages, and supplementing precision medicine. An area of healthcare that specifically looks at wearable devices, sensors, phone applications, and other such devices is mobile health (mHealth). These devices are used to aid in health data collection and delivery. This …

Many doubly charged heteronuclear dimers are metastable or even thermodynamically stable with respect to charge separation. Homonuclear dicationic dimers, however, are more difficult to form. He22+ was the first noble gas dimer predicted to be metastable and, decades later, observed. Ne22+ is the only other dicationic noble gas dimer that has been detected so far. Here, we present a novel approach to form fragile dicationic species, by post-ionization of singly charged ions that are embedded in helium nanodroplets (HNDs). Bare ions are then extracted by colliding the HNDs with helium gas. We detect homonuclear doubly charged …

Estimating Polarization Purity With Noise, Alex Kostinski, Dan Kestner, Jothiram Vivekanandan
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2
We formulate a problem of estimating and monitoring mismatch (unwanted departure from orthogonality) of two ostensibly orthogonal polarization channels in a fully polarimetric general device such as a polarimetric weather radar. A statistical approach is proposed by using thermal noise or, more generally, a 'polarimetric noise' class of sources. The suitable noise class of distributions is shown to be rooted in the complex multivariate Gaussian probability density function (pdf), the latter possessing a uniform pdf on the Poincare sphere (PS), with a probability measure given by a fractional surface area. To that end, we develop a parameter to estimate polarization …

Using Chatgpt To Generate Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Gendered language is the use of words that denote an individual's gender. This can be explicit where the gender is evident in the actual word used, e.g. mother, she, man, but it can also be implicit where social roles or behaviours can signal an individual's gender - for example, expectations that women display communal traits (e.g., affectionate, caring, gentle) and men display agentic traits (e.g., assertive, competitive, decisive). The use of gendered language in NLP systems can perpetuate gender stereotypes and bias. This paper proposes an approach to generating gendered language datasets using ChatGPT which will provide data for data-driven …

Will Saf Turbocharge The Corn Ethanol Market?, Richard Perrin, Lilyan Fulginiti, Felipe Miranda De Souza Almeida
Cornhusker Economics
The long-run outlook for the corn ethanol industry is questionable, due to a transition to electric and hybrid vehicles. One source of hope for the long run is the potential demand for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is a key component in the United States Aviation Climate Action Plan, a path to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the aviation industry by 2050. Demand for ethanol for SAF offers hope to the ethanol industry, but it depends a great deal on policy decisions that are being made now. Here we sketch out this story.

The axial electric potentials of neutrinos as neutral composite structures, while being very small at large distances, do not vanish, and the same can be said about the neutrino “asymmetric dipoles” (paired neutrinos of not the same kind). Depending on the orientation of the “asymmetric dipole”, its far-field electric potential in some direction can be positive or negative, interacting with other “dipoles” at that large distance attractively or repulsively depending on their mutual orientation. The mutual orientation of the dipoles locally (inside a galaxy) might be such that they are aligned and experience the attractive force toward the local center …

The mechanism of action (MoA) of a clickable fatty acid analogue 8-(2-Cyclobuten-1-yl)octanoic acid (DA-CB) has been investigated for the first time. Proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics were combined with a network analysis to investigate the MoA of DA-CB against Mycobacterium smegmatis (Msm). The metabolomics results showed that DA-CB has a general MoA related to that of ethionamide, a mycolic acid inhibitor that targets enoyl-ACP reductase (InhA), but DA-CB likely inhibits a step downstream from InhA. Our combined multi-omics approach showed that DA-CB appears to disrupt the pathway leading to the biosynthesis of mycolic acids, an essential mycobacterial fatty acid …

The accuracy and ease of metabolite assignments from a complex mixture are expected to be facilitated by employing a multi-spectral approach. The 2D 1H-13C HSQC and 2D 1H-1H-TOCSY are the experiments commonly used for metabolite assignments. The 2D 1H-13C HSQC-TOCSY and 2D 1H-13C HMBC are routinely used by natural products chemists but have seen minimal usage in metabolomics despite the unique information, the nearly complete 1H-1H and 1H-13C and spin systems provided by these experiments that may improve the accuracy and reliability …

Beyond Standard Model: Neutrino-Antineutrino Pairs In Nuclear Reactions Of Beta-Decay And Proton-Neutron Transmutation., Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
On examples of different beta-decay reactions, we show that the neutrino-antineutrino pairs should be added as necessary reagents to the equations of the decay reactions where a neutrino or an antineutrino is among the products of the reaction. In our models, quarks and leptons are all made of basic fractional +-e/3 charges. Transfer of basic charges between reagents forms the products of the reaction. We suggest that there is no direct conversion of u-quark to d-quark and visa versa. Each transmutation involves a transfer of basic charges from a neutrino to a quark so the structure of remaining charges in …

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), a group of emerging pollutants, have significantly longer lifetimes than typical free radicals. EPFRs form by the adsorption of organic precursors on a transition metal oxide (TMO) surface involving electron charge transfer between the organic and TMO. In this paper, dihalogenated benzenes were incorporated to study the role of electronegativity in the electron transfer process to obtain a fundamental knowledge of EPFR formation mechanism on ZnO. Upon chemisorption on ZnO nanoparticles at 250 °C, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) confirms the formation of oxygen adjacent carbon-centered organic free radicals with concentrations between 1016 and 1017 spins/g. …

Asymptotics Of The Rate Function In The Large Deviation Principle For Sums Of Independent Identically Distributed Random Variables, Iosif Pinelis
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2
Let Λ∗be the rate function in the large deviation principle for the sums X1 + · · · + Xn of independent identically distributed random variables X1, X2, …. It is shown that Λ∗(x) ∼ − ln P(X1 ≥ x) (as x → ∞) if and only if ln P(X1 ≥ x) ∼ L0(x) for some concave function L0. The main ingredient of the proof is the general, explicit expression of a suitable quasi-minimizer in t ≥ 0 of the Bernstein–Chernoff upper bound e−txEetX1 on P(X1 ≥ x), which is amenable to analysis and, at the same time, is close …

An autonomous, power-assisted Turtlebot is presented in this paper in order to enhance human mobility. The turtlebot moves from its initial position to its final position at a predetermined speed and acceleration. We propose an intelligent navigation system that relies solely on individual instructions. When there is no individual present, the Turtlebot remains stationary. Turtlebot utilizes a rotating Kinect sensor in order to perceive its path. Various angles were examined in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in experiments conducted on a U-shaped experimental pathway. The Turtlebot was used as an experimental device during these trials. Based on …

In this paper we relate notions of nonclassicality in what is known as the simplest nontrivial scenario (a prepare and measure scenario composed of four preparations and two binary-outcome tomographically complete measurements). Specifically, we relate the established method developed by Pusey [M. F. Pusey, Phys. Rev. A 98, 022112 (2018)] to witness a violation of preparation noncontextuality, that is not suitable in experiments where the operational equivalences to be tested are specified in advance, with an approach based on the notion of bounded ontological distinctness for preparations, defined by Chaturvedi and Saha [A. Avena sativa phototropin 1 light-oxygen-voltage 2 domain (AsLOV2) is a model protein of Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) superfamily, characterized by conformational changes in response to external environmental stimuli. This conformational change begins with the unfolding of the N-terminal A'α helix in the dark state followed by the unfolding of the C-terminal Jα helix. The light state is characterized by the unfolded termini and the subsequent modifications in hydrogen bond patterns. In this photoreceptor, β-sheets are identified as crucial components for mediating allosteric signal transmission between the two termini. Through combined experimental and computational investigations, the Hβ …

The Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) instability can transport mass, momentum, magnetic flux, and energy between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere, which plays an important role in the solar‐wind‐ magnetosphere coupling process for different planets. Meanwhile, strong density and magnetic field asymmetry are often present between the magnetosheath (MSH) and magnetosphere (MSP), which could affect the transport processes driven by the KH instability. Our magnetohydrodynamics simulation shows that the KH growth rate is insensitive to the density ratio between the MSP and the MSH in the compressible regime, which is different than the prediction from linear incompressible theory. When the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) …

We develop six-dimensional single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) to measure the 3D positions and 3D orientations simultaneously of single fluorophores. We show how careful optimization of phase and polarization modulation components can encode phase, polarization, and angular spectrum information from each fluorescence photon into a microscope’s dipole-spread function. We used the transient binding and blinking of Nile red (NR) to characterize the helical structure of fibrils formed by designed amphipathic peptides, KFE8L and KFE8D, and the pathological amyloid-beta peptide Aβ42. We also deployed merocyanine 540 to uncover the interfacial architectures of biomolecular condensates.

Tuberculosis (TB)-causing bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) utilizes mycolic acids for building the mycobacterial cell wall, which is critical in providing defense against external factors and resisting antibiotic action. MmpL3 is a secondary resistance nodulation division transporter that facilitates the coupled transport of mycolic acid precursor into the periplasm using the proton motive force, thus making it an attractive drug target for TB infection. In 2019, X-ray crystal structures of MmpL3 from M. smegmatis were solved with a promising inhibitor SQ109, which showed promise against drug-resistant TB in Phase II clinical trials. Still, there is a pressing need to discover more …
