A Geomorphic Enthalpy Method: Description And Application To The Evolution Of Fluvial-Deltas Under Sea-Level Cycles, William Anderson, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba, Vaughan Voller Aug 2019

A Geomorphic Enthalpy Method: Description And Application To The Evolution Of Fluvial-Deltas Under Sea-Level Cycles, William Anderson, Jorge Lorenzo Trueba, Vaughan Voller

Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba

Fluvial deltas are composites of two primary sedimentary environments: a depositional fluvial region and an offshore region. The fluvial region is defined by two geomorphic moving boundaries: an alluvial-bedrock transition (ABT), which separates the sediment prism from the non-erodible bedrock basement, and the shoreline (SH), where the delta meets the ocean. The trajectories of these boundaries in time and space define the evolution of the shape of the sedimentary prism, and are often used as stratigraphic indicators, particularly in seismic studies, of changes in relative sea level and the identification of stratigraphic sequences. In order to better understand the relative …

System Projector: An Automatic Program Rewriting Tool For Non-Ground Answer Set Programs, Yuliya Lierler Aug 2019

System Projector: An Automatic Program Rewriting Tool For Non-Ground Answer Set Programs, Yuliya Lierler

Yuliya Lierler

Answer set programming is a popular constraint programming paradigm that has seen wide use across various industry applications. However, logic programs under answer set semantics often require careful design and nontrivial expertise from a programmer to obtain satisfactory solving times. In order to reduce this burden on a software engineer we propose an automated rewriting technique for non-ground logic programs that we implement in a system PROJECTOR. We conduct rigorous experimental analysis, which shows that applying system PROJECTOR to a logic program can improve its performance, even after significant human-performed optimizations. This talk will present PROJECTOR and considered experimental analysis …

Information Extraction Tool Text2alm: From Narratives To Action Language System Descriptions, Craig Olson, Yuliya Lierler Aug 2019

Information Extraction Tool Text2alm: From Narratives To Action Language System Descriptions, Craig Olson, Yuliya Lierler

Yuliya Lierler

In this work we design a narrative understanding tool Text2Alm. System Text2Alm uses an action language ALM to perform inferences on complex interactions of events described in narratives. The methodology used to implement the Text2Alm was originally outlined by Lierler et al. 2017 via a manual process of converting a narrative to an ALM model. It relies on a conglomeration of resources and techniques from two distinct fields of artificial intelligence, namely, natural language processing and knowledge representation and reasoning. The effectiveness of system Text2Alm  is measured by its ability to correctly answer questions from the bAbI tasks published by …

The neutron provides a simple yet dynamic nuclear system to study the Standard Model of Particle Physics. The process of transforming a neutron into a proton, an electron, and an anti-neutrino contains a wealth of information in the decay rate and the kinematics of the emitted particles. Precision measurements of angular correlations in neutron β-decay can lend insight to the structure of the weak interaction and probe for physics beyond the Standard Model. The UCNA experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center is the only experiment to use ultracold neutrons to perform such a measurement, determining the β-asymmetry parameter …

Marine Invertebrates: Communities At Risk, Jennifer A. Mather Aug 2019

Marine Invertebrates: Communities At Risk, Jennifer A. Mather

Jennifer Mather, PhD

Our definition of the word ‘animal’ centers on vertebrates, yet 99% of the animals on the planet are invertebrates, about which we know little. In addition, although the Census of Marine Life (COML.org) has recently conducted an extensive audit of marine ecosystems, we still do not understand much about the animals of the seas. Surveys of the best-known ecosystems, in which invertebrate populations often play a key role, show that the invertebrate populations are affected by human impact. Coral animals are the foundation of coral reef systems, which are estimated to contain 30% of the species in the ocean. Physical …

Circumferences Of 3-Connected Claw-Free Graphs, Ii, Zhi-Hong Chen

Zhi-Hong Chen

For a graph H , the circumference of H , denoted by c ( H ) , is the length of a longest cycle in H . It is proved in Chen (2016) that if H is a 3-connected claw-free graph of order n with δ ≥ 8 , then c ( H ) ≥ min { 9 δ − 3 , n } . In Li (2006), Li conjectured that every 3-connected k -regular claw-free graph H of order n has c ( H ) ≥ min { 10 k − 4 , n } . Later, Li posed …

Acute Toxicity Testing Without Animals: More Scientific And Less Of A Gamble, Gillian R. Langley Aug 2019

Acute Toxicity Testing Without Animals: More Scientific And Less Of A Gamble, Gillian R. Langley

Gill Langley, PhD

In this report, we argue specifically that acute toxicity data should not be sought from animal tests. The underlying principle of such tests on rats and mice is that the results can be effectively extrapolated to humans. In fact, after nearly 80 years of use of these tests, the predictivity of rodent data for human acute toxic effects has been disputed but never proven.

And then study the relationship between the solar radiation and output power. We installed these panels in four angles at 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and fixed solar panel all the month of the year and fixed in august especially to study the daily solar radiation in summer .The results indicate that the highest output power of …

A Geometric Generalizaion Of The Planar Gale-Nikaidô Theorem, Eduardo C. Balreira Aug 2019

A Geometric Generalizaion Of The Planar Gale-Nikaidô Theorem, Eduardo C. Balreira

Eduardo Cabral Balreira

The Gale-Nikaidô Theorem establishes global injectivity of maps defined over rectangular regions provided the Jacobian matrix is a P-matrix. We provide a purely geometric generalization of this result in the plane by showing that if the image of each edge of the rectangular domain is realized as a graph of a function over the appropriate axis, then the map is injective. We also show that the hypothesis that the Jacobian matrix is a P-matrix is simply one way to analytically check this geometric condition.

Global Stability Of Higher Dimensional Monotone Maps, Eduardo C. Balreira, Saber Elaydi, Rafael Luis Aug 2019

Global Stability Of Higher Dimensional Monotone Maps, Eduardo C. Balreira, Saber Elaydi, Rafael Luis

Eduardo Cabral Balreira

We develop a notion of monotonicity for maps defined on Euclidean spaces Rk+, of arbitrary dimension k. This is a geometric approach that extends the classical notion of planar monotone maps or planar competitive difference equations. For planar maps, we show that our notion and the classical notion of monotonicity are equivalent. In higher dimensions, we establish certain verifiable conditions under which Kolmogorov monotone maps on Rk+ have a globally asymptotically stable fixed point. We apply our results to two competition population models, the Leslie–Gower and the Ricker models of two- and three-species. It …

Harvesting fertilized rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop has been suggested as a method to increase producer revenue and biofuel feedstock production, but drainage N loss impacts are currently unknown. Using the tested Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) across several N rates, spring application of 120 kg N ha-1 prior to winter rye harvest reduced drainage N loss by 54% compared with no cover crop and by 18% compared with planted rye that was neither fertilized nor harvested. Estimates of producer revenue and net energy were also positive, with 8.3 Mg ha-1 of harvested rye biomass. …

Impact Of Biochar Amendments On The Quality Of A Typical Midwestern Agricultural Soil, David A. Laird, Pierce Fleming, Dedrick D. Davis, Robert Horton, Baiqun Wang, Douglas L. Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

Biochar, a co-product of thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic materials into advanced biofuels, may be used as a soil amendment to enhance the sustainability of biomass harvesting. We investigated the impact of biochar amendments (0, 5, 10, and 20 g-biochar kg− 1 soil) on the quality of a Clarion soil (Mesic Typic Hapludolls), collected (0–15 cm) in Boone County, Iowa. Repacked soil columns were incubated for 500 days at 25 °C and 80% relative humidity. On week 12, 5 g of dried and ground swine manure was incorporated into the upper 3 cm of soil for half of the columns. Once …

The Midwestern U.S. landscape is one of the most highly altered and intensively managed ecosystems in the country. The predominant crops grown are maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr]. They are typically grown as monocrops in a simple yearly rotation or with multiple years of maize (2 to 3) followed by a single year of soybean. This system is highly productive because the crops and management systems have been well adapted to the regional growing conditions through substantial public and private investment. Furthermore, markets and supporting infrastructure are highly developed for both crops. As maize and …

Future Prospects For Corn As A Biofuel Crop, Kenneth J. Moore, Douglas L. Karlen, Kendall R. Lamkey Aug 2019

Future Prospects For Corn As A Biofuel Crop, Kenneth J. Moore, Douglas L. Karlen, Kendall R. Lamkey

Douglas L Karlen

Ethanol production from corn grain has increased signifi cantly during the past ten years in the US. This increase was driven by government policy guided by the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and embodied in the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit and other legislation created to promote a biofuels industry. As corn grain ethanol production approaches the target set out in the RFS, the industry is looking to develop capacity for producing advanced biofuels, primarily from agricultural wastes and dedicated energy crops. The residues remaining following corn harvest have been identifi ed as a voluminous and readily available feedstock for advanced …

Reducing Agriculture's Contribution To Nitrate Contamination Of Surface Waters, Dana L. Dinnes, Cynthia A. Cambardella, Thomas S. Colvin, Daniel B. Jaynes, Douglas L. Karlen Aug 2019

Reducing Agriculture's Contribution To Nitrate Contamination Of Surface Waters, Dana L. Dinnes, Cynthia A. Cambardella, Thomas S. Colvin, Daniel B. Jaynes, Douglas L. Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

One of the most prevalent environmental issues throughout the Midwest is nitrate (N03) contamination of surface waters. Non-point source pollution resulting from nitrogen (N) fertilizer use on artificially drained agricultural land has been identified as a major contributor to this problem. High levels of nitratenitrogen (N03-N) in water supplies pose risks to humans and livestock (Tyson et. al., 1992), and has cost some communities millions of dollars for N03 removal. The city of Des Moines, Iowa alone has spent in excess of 5.3 million dollars, not including labor costs, for nitrate treatment of its drinking waters from 1992-1996 (Graham, 1997). …

Biochar Impact On Nutrient Leaching From A Midwestern Agricultural Soil, David Laird, Pierce Flemming, Baiqun Wang, Robert Horton, Douglas Karlen Aug 2019

Biochar Impact On Nutrient Leaching From A Midwestern Agricultural Soil, David Laird, Pierce Flemming, Baiqun Wang, Robert Horton, Douglas Karlen

Douglas L Karlen

Application of biochar to highly weathered tropical soils has been shown to enhance soil quality and decrease leaching of nutrients. Little, however, is known about the effects of biochar applications on temperate region soils. Our objective was to quantify the impact of biochar on leaching of plant nutrients following application of swine manure to a typical Midwestern agricultural soil. Repacked soil columns containing 0, 5, 10, and 20 g-biochar kg− 1-soil, with and without 5 g kg− 1 of dried swine manure were leached weekly for 45 weeks. Measurements showed a significant decrease in the total amount of N, P, …

This birds-of-a-feather provides a discussion forum to foster innovation in teaching operating systems (os) at the undergraduate level. This birds-of-a-feather seeks to generate discussion and ideas around pedagogy for os and, in particular, how we might develop a contemporary and innovative model, in both content and delivery, for an os course—that plays a central role in a cs curriculum—and addresses significant issues of misalignment between existing os courses and employee professional skills and knowledge requirements. We would like to exchange ideas regarding a re-conceptualized course model of os curriculum and related pedagogy, especially in the areas of mobile OSs and …

An Introduction To Declarative Programming In Clips And Prolog, Jack L. Watkin, Adam C. Volk, Saverio Perugini Aug 2019

An Introduction To Declarative Programming In Clips And Prolog, Jack L. Watkin, Adam C. Volk, Saverio Perugini

Saverio Perugini

We provide a brief introduction to CLIPS—a declarative/logic programming language for implementing expert systems—and PROLOG—a declarative/logic programming language based on first-order, predicate calculus. Unlike imperative languages in which the programmer specifies how to compute a solution to a problem, in a declarative language, the programmer specifies what they what to find, and the system uses a search strategy built into the language. We also briefly discuss applications of CLIPS and PROLOG.
