Nanoscale Oxide Patterns On Si (100) Surfaces, T. -C. Shen, C. Wang, J. W. Lyding, J. R. Tucker Dec 1995

Nanoscale Oxide Patterns On Si (100) Surfaces, T. -C. Shen, C. Wang, J. W. Lyding, J. R. Tucker

T. -C. Shen

Ultrathin oxide patterns of a linewidth of 50 Å have been created on Si(100)‐2×1 surfaces by a scanning tunneling microscope operating in ultrahigh vacuum. The oxide thickness is estimated to be 4–10 Å. The morphology and spectroscopy of the oxide region are obtained. Hydrogen passivation is used as an oxidation mask. The defects caused by oxidation in the passivated region before and after the hydrogen desorption are compared and discussed. The multistep silicon processings by an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling micropscope is thus demonstrated.

Correlations Between Auditory‐Filter Shape Parameters Measured At Proximal Center Frequencies, Marc A. Fagelson, Craig A. Champlin Dec 1995

Correlations Between Auditory‐Filter Shape Parameters Measured At Proximal Center Frequencies, Marc A. Fagelson, Craig A. Champlin

Marc A. Fagelson

Auditory‐filter shape parameters in 20 normal‐hearing listeners were determined at center frequencies (CFs) of 913, 1095, 3651, and 4382 Hz using the five‐point roex (p,r) method. Slopes of the filters’ skirts were correlated for the CFs in each frequency region at both low and high stimulus levels. In the λ=1000‐Hz region, the auditory filters’ low‐frequency slopes were significantly correlated at the low and high stimulus levels, while the high‐frequency slopes were associated at the high, but not the low level. In the λ=4000‐Hz region the relationships were clearer as the low‐frequency and high‐frequency filter skirts diverged at the low level, …

Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr Dec 1995

Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Community intervention evaluations that measure changes over time may conduct repeated cross-sectional surveys, follow a cohort of residents over time, or (often) use both designs. Each survey design has implications for precision and cost. To explore these issues, we assume that two waves of surveys are conducted, and that the goal is to estimate change in behavior for people who reside in the community at both times. Cohort designs are shown to provide more accurate estimates (in the sense of lower mean squared error) than cross-sectional estimates if (1) there is strong correlation over time in an individual's behavior at …

Reconstruction Of Solar Irradiance Since 1610: Implications For Climate Cbange, Judith Lean, Juerg Beer, Raymond S. Bradley Dec 1995

Reconstruction Of Solar Irradiance Since 1610: Implications For Climate Cbange, Judith Lean, Juerg Beer, Raymond S. Bradley

Raymond S Bradley

Solar total and ultraviolet (UV) irradiances are reconstructed annually from J610 to the present. This epoch ~ludes the Maunder Minimmn of anomalously low solar activi1}' (circa 1645-1115) and the subsequent increase to the high levels of the present Modem Maximum. In this reconstruction, the Schwabe (II-year) irradiaoce cycle and a longer term Variability component are determined separately, based on contemporary. solar and stellar monitoring. The correlation of reconstructed solar irradiance and Northern Hemisphere (NIl) surface temperature is 0.86 in the pre-industrial period from 1610 to 1800, implying a predominant solar influence. Extending this correlation to the present suggests that solar …

While the Alphatestx herbal supplement itself can grant firmer, harder erections and a better sex drive right away, long term stamina depends on your overall fitness. It is common sense that someone who's out of breath after climbing three flights of stairs will also tire out after minutes of sex. However, good stamina is not built overnight. It takes time, dedication, and a plan, which this program will provide. Natural Gain Plus is not a drug, and does not require a prescription.

Variation In Lightness Of White Oak Dimension Stock, Douglas D. Stokke, Anton D. Pugel, John E. Phelps Oct 1995

Variation In Lightness Of White Oak Dimension Stock, Douglas D. Stokke, Anton D. Pugel, John E. Phelps

Douglas D. Stokke

The objectives of this research were to generate a set of sample parameters for the lightness of planed white oak dimension stock, to investigate the effect of grain angle on lightness values, and to determine the level of sampling needed to color match white oak dimension stock on the basis of lightness or darkness as quantified by the parameter L* (psychometric lightness). This information is important when used to determine the feasibility of low-cost portable instruments for evaluating color in an edge-glued hardwood panel production setting. Color measurements were obtained with a portable spectrophotometer interfaced with a notebook computer. The …

Extended Molecular Gas Distribution In Mrk 273 And Merger-Luminosity Evolution, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville Oct 1995

Extended Molecular Gas Distribution In Mrk 273 And Merger-Luminosity Evolution, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville

Min S. Yun

We present the first interferometric measurement of CO emission (θ ~ 2'') from the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273. A total H2 mass of 3.6 × 1010 Msun is inferred from the CO observations, half of which belongs to an extended component with deconvolved size 5.1 × 2.5 kpc. In addition, an unresolved molecular gas complex is found to be coincident with the optical nucleus. The inferred H2 mass, size (R ~ 380 pc), and mean surface mass density (ΣH2 ≥ 4 × 104 Msun pc-3) of this complex, as well as the IR luminosity, are very similar to those …

Gary A. Morris

The problem of creating synoptic maps from asynoptically gathered trace gas data has prompted the development of a number of schemes. Most notable among these schemes are the Kalman filter, the Salby-Fourier technique, and constituent reconstruction. This paper explores a new technique called "trajectory mapping." Trajectory mapping creates synoptic maps from asynoptically gathered data by advecting measurements backward or forward in time using analyzed wind fields. A significant portion of this work is devoted to an analysis of errors in synoptic trajectory maps associated with the calculation of individual parcel trajectories. In particular, we have considered (1) calculational errors; (2) …

Origin Of The 〈11/20〉 Atomic Short-Range Order In Au-Rich Au-Fe Alloys, M. F. Ling, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski Aug 1995

Origin Of The 〈11/20〉 Atomic Short-Range Order In Au-Rich Au-Fe Alloys, M. F. Ling, J. B. Staunton, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski

Duane D. Johnson

We have calculated the atomic short-range order (ASRO) and paramagnetic susceptibility in high-temperature, chemically disordered Au75Fe25 and Au90Fe10, using a density-functional-based, electronic-structure method. For both alloys, we obtain 〈11/20〉-type ASRO, in excellent agreement with experiments performed on samples that have been fast quenched from high temperature. We also identify the underlying electronic mechanism responsible for this unusual ordering behavior. During annealing at high temperatures, we suggest that aligning local moments via an external magnetic field will produce interesting AuFe alloys with 〈100〉-type ASRO.

The In Situ Passive Acoustic Measurement Of Shingle Movement Under Waves And Currents: Instrument (Tosca) Development And Preliminary Results, George Voulgaris, Michael Wilkin, Michael Collins Jul 1995

The In Situ Passive Acoustic Measurement Of Shingle Movement Under Waves And Currents: Instrument (Tosca) Development And Preliminary Results, George Voulgaris, Michael Wilkin, Michael Collins

George Voulgaris

An instrumented platform (TOSCA) is described for monitoring coarse-grained sediment transport in high (wave and tidal) energy environments. The system consists of a number of sensors which measure: instantaneous current velocities at three levels; sea surface elevation; and self-generated noise (SGN) caused by intercollision of particles in transit. SGN is related to transport rates, on the basis of laboratory calibration; this, in turn, allows a correlation with simultaneous near-bed shear stress to be established. During the field measurements, PC-based real-time data transmission is realised through the use of a (buoyed) radio telemetry system.

TOSCA has been deployed in eastern Christchurch …

High-Resolution Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Of Jupiter's Aurora With The Hubble Space Telescope, Y. H. Kim, John J. Caldwell, Jane L. Fox Jul 1995

High-Resolution Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Of Jupiter's Aurora With The Hubble Space Telescope, Y. H. Kim, John J. Caldwell, Jane L. Fox

Jane L. Fox

In 1993 June and July, we obtained 18 spectra of Jupiter's aurora in the wavelength range 1586-1620 Å using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The field of view for each observation was 2" × 2". There were 14 spectra of the northern and four spectra of the southern auroral ovals. The spectra are dominated by vibrational-rotational lines of the H2 Lyman band system, from which we have determined H2 rotational temperatures which correspond to the altitude region where most of the auroral emission originates. Intense emission was observed in …
