We present a semiclassical method of calculating vibrational energy levels for a system of nonseparable coupled oscillators. For a Hamiltonian written as a power series in which the leading terms are given by a sum of one‐dimensional harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians, the method involves transforming the original classical Hamiltonian via a succession of canonical transformations into a normal form which is a power series originally defined by Birkhoff and later generalized by Gustavson. Two cases are distinguished. If the harmonic oscillator frequencies in the unperturbed Hamiltonian are incommensurable, then the normal form is a power series whose terms are products of …

On The Water Masses Of Norfolk Canyon, Evon Paul Ruzecki

Results from four cruises in the outer continental shelf/slope region of the Middle Atlantic Bight demonstrate the effect of Norfolk Canyon, an east coast submarine canyon, on the exchange of local water masses. Seasonal distributions of water masses and water types around the canyon were determined from closely spaced (2-5 km) hydrographic and XBT stations. Five component water types representing shelf, winter (or cold pool), slope, warm Western North Atlantic and cool Western North Atlantic waters are defined by specific T/S signatures. A comparison of the bathymetric surveys of the 1850-series and 1950-series indicated an average sedimentation rate for the Virginia Chesapeake Bay of 0.55 m (1.81 ft) for the last century. A statistically significant relationship between the depth of water and the rate of sedimentation was found where high rates of sedimentation exist in extremely shallow water (0 to 2 m) and in intermediate depths (6 to 13 m), while low rates exist between 2 m and 6 m, and in some cases in water deeper than 13 m. The York River drainage basin is rural, with an economy based on farming, logging, fishing and recreation. Water quality conditions are generally good, with low chlorophyll and nutrients and low fecal coliform counts. Dissolved oxygen concentrations are high except for periodic deoxygenation of the water deeper than 8 m in the reach extending 10 km upstream of the mouth.
A quasi-three dimensional tidal average model was constructed and calibrated using intensive field data collected in June and July, 1976 and verified using slack water run data from September, 1976. The model components are: salinity, fecal coliform, chlorophyll, CBOD, dissolved oxygen, …

Plant geography and water quality data were collected in shallow water near Cape Charles and Occohannock Creek, Virginia on two occasions. Data from April, 1978 included hydrography, distribution and abundance of -submerged aquatic vegetation, phytoplankton census, and water clarity data. Data from May, 1978 included hydrography, phytoplankton census, water clarity, and primary productivity data. The May data collection was coincident with an overflight of the NASA JSC C-130 aircraft (6600 m) acquiring color infrared photography and multispectral scanner data; cell concentrations reached 105/ml, chlorophyll~ 72 pg/1, and suspended sediment 94 mg/1. i

A rigorously correct and fully quantum-mechanical theory of slow atomic collisions is presented, which removes the formal defects and spurious nonadiabatic couplings of perturbed-stationary-states theory, and arrives at coupled equations for the heavy-particle motion which are the same as those obtained in the preceding paper by the electron translation factor formulation. Here, however, the theory is formulated in terms of suitably defined scattering coordinates, and electron translation factors do not appear. A unified physical interpretation of both approaches can thereby be made, and smaller terms in the coupled equations, describing corrections of order mμ to electronic binding energies and to …

The theory of near-adiabatic collisions is formulated in a fully quantum-mechanical form, correctly taking into account the role of electron translation factors (ETF's). A general form for the ETF, using switching functions, is given for systems which are electrically either asymmetric or symmetric (with or without mass asymmetry). The main result is that the close-coupled scattering equations obtained in the perturbed-stationary-states theory must be replaced by equations of identical form, but having modified nonadiabatic coupling matrices. In general, the corrections involved are substantial; their nature, and effect on coupling matrices, is discussed, and conditions when they are likely to …

It identifies, by name, address, and telephone number, academic researchers, administrators, institutions, agencies, interest groups, consulting organizations, and other entities concerned with the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay and related water matters. It is current as of February 1978 and should be revised periodically to incorporate changes in personnel and organization structure.

Methods applicable to zooplankton sampling and analysis in quantitative baseline and monitoring surveys are evaluated and summarized. Specific recommendations by managers must take into account characteristics of the water mass under investigation, the abundance of contained zooplankton and phytoplankton populations and the objectives of the study. Realistic planning and development must also consider available monetary and manpower resources.

Modeling Sediment Movement In The Turbidity Maximum Of An Estuary, Allbert Kuo, Maynard M. Nichols, James Lewis

This research developed a two-dimensional, time-dependent numerical model to simulate the movement of water and suspended sediment in the turbidity maximum of an estuary. This model is a systematic sequence of mathematical procedures derived from the mass-balance equation and the equation of motion. Lateral integration is used to obtain two-dimensional equations; these equations are integrated with depth over the height of successive layers. Finite difference equations then are written for each layer and solved numerically using prescribed boundary conditions.
