Comparison Of Soil Organic Carbon Stocks In Two Forest Types In Huron Mountains, Michigan, Nicholas Johnson

Research Days

It is of utmost importance to keep track of the soil organic carbon (SOC) level in forests due to how it affects atmospheric CO2 concentrations and how it mitigates climate change. This study investigates the amount of soil organic carbon that we have gathered from two different forest types such as the Red Pine and Hemlock Sugar Maple Forest. The soil samples used from these two forest types were taken from the Huron Mountain located in Michigan. The Red Pine forest is a plantation forest while the Hemlock Sugar Maple forest is natural. We will be comparing the levels of …

Body Dimension And Length-Weigh Relationships Of Invasive Exotic Earthworm Species In Huron Mountains Forests, Paula Arroyo, Xiaoyong Chen, Timothy Gsell, John A. Yunger, Mary E. Carrington

Research Days

Invasive exotic earthworms have undesired ecological effects on structure, function, and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in the Great Lakes region. Biological parameters including body length, weight, growth rate, and regeneration patterns of earthworms are necessary to understand their life cycle and impacts on ecological processes such as nutrient biogeochemistry cycling and carbon sequestration in the forests, as well as for forest management practices. In this work, earthworms were surveyed in main forest types of the Huron Mountains Preserve of Michigan, Upper Peninsula during the period of May 2021 to October 2022. Earthworms were captured from established sampling quadrates using a …

An Exploratory Study On Methods For Interpolating And Extrapolating Baseball Win-Loss Percentage, Giselle Palacios

All Student Theses

The 2020 Major League Baseball season was shortened by a few months due to travel restrictions implemented in response to Coronavirus pandemic. When baseball began in mid-July, the schedule had been changed so that teams were mostly playing against division opponents. This left some fans wondering how different the 2020 season would have looked if the original schedule of 162 games were played. A website called Strat-O-Matic used the Monte Carlo method to simulate a full 2020 season. This paper proposes and explores other possible models for predicting the outcome of the season. The first model we present is a …

Reducing Disposable Plastic Waste From Protein Quantitative Assays, Justin Buiter Jan 2023

Reducing Disposable Plastic Waste From Protein Quantitative Assays, Justin Buiter

All Capstone Projects

Protein concentration quantification is important for many areas of biology and biochemistry. This quantification happens in large quantities in laboratories and needs to be done accurately and quickly. The Bradford assay is one of the most common ways of accomplishing this task (1). This assay relies on the binding of the protein and the Coomassie Blue G250 dye. The anionic blue form binds to the protein and has a maximum at 595 nm. This allows for accurate quantification by reading how much of the sample absorbs at 595 nm (2).

In 2014, it was estimated that 5.5 million tons of …

Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski Jan 2023

Autodocking Studies Of Oxygenated Fullerenes As Inhibitors Of The Hiv Protease, Michael Kaminski

All Student Theses

In a previous study, several oxygenated fullerene compounds were produced by ozonation of C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) and were identified by elemental analysis and by SALI (surface analysis by laser ionization). Some of these compounds, especially a batch, SK-5, a mixture of C60O1-8, were shown to inhibit activities of HIV-Protease with IC50 (concentration for 50% inhibition) of 1 mg/mol in the in-vitro studies. The oxygenated fullerenes were shown to have epoxide, ketones, and hydroxyl functionalities. As expected, C60 interacted with ozone with alkene functionality and not as an aromatic compound. It was postulated that C60O had epoxide functionality, as a product of …

Bond Valence Sum Analysis On Compounds Prepared By Topochemical Manipulation, Yasmin Dayeh

All Capstone Projects

The Bond Valence theory of Brown (1978) has been extensively used to correlate metal oxidation state to coordination environment in solids. Although the bond valence sum (BVS) appears to be extremely useful to coordination chemists, it has not often been applied as an alternative measure of refinement quality. In this work, previously reported six layered perovskite compounds including, RbLaNb2O7, Rb2LaNb2O7, Rb2SxLaNb2O7 (x ≤ 0.8), NaLaNb2O7, (Cs2Cl)LaNb2O7, and (FeCl)LaNb2O7, that have been prepared by topochemical manipulation and their structures have been determined by Rietveld refinements were analyzed. Our focus was to explore whether the determination of oxidation state using the bond …
