Triple Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Carbonates, Jordan A.G. Wostbrock
Triple Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Carbonates, Jordan A.G. Wostbrock
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
This dissertation presents a method of analyzing the triple oxygen isotope compositions of carbonates, presents an empirical calibration of the carbonate-water equilibrium fractionation line, presents a triple oxygen isotope equipped fluid-rock mixing model for carbonates to see-through diagenesis, and applies all these findings to ancient carbonate samples. Using modern carbonates and associate water, the following equations are calculated to describe equilibrium triple oxygen isotope fractionation of carbonates:
1000lnalpha18Occ-wt=2.84x106/T2-2.96 1),
Thetacc-wt=-1.39/T+0.5305 2).
Using these fractionation equations provides an extremely useful tool to determine whether a carbonate sample is altered or preserves …
Neogene Drainage Reversal And Colorado Plateau Uplift In The Salt River Area, Jordan Curtis Anderson
Neogene Drainage Reversal And Colorado Plateau Uplift In The Salt River Area, Jordan Curtis Anderson
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The modern Salt River flows southwest from the Colorado Plateau, through the Arizona Transition Zone and into to the Basin and Range. Rivers in this area flowed northeast during the Paleogene from the Laramide Mogollon Highlands into structural basins of the topographically lower southern Colorado Plateau area. One of these rivers carved the Salt River paleocanyon through a portion of the Mogollon Highlands known as the Apache Uplift to similar depths as the modern Grand Canyon. This study refines the timing of this drainage reversal in the Salt River area by constraining the ages of paleoriver sediments deposited during the …

Marine protists are integral to the structure and function of pelagic ecosystems and marine carbon cycling, with rhizarian biomass alone accounting for more than half of all mesozooplankton in the oligotrophic oceans. Yet, understanding how their environment shapes diversity within species and across taxa is limited by a paucity of observations of heritability and life history. Here, we present observations of asexual reproduction, morphologic plasticity, and ontogeny in the planktic foraminifer in laboratory culture. Our results demonstrate that planktic foraminifera reproduce both sexually and asexually and demonstrate extensive phenotypic plasticity in response to nonheritable factors. These two processes fundamentally explain …

Phosphorus Variability In The Area Of Influence Of The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, Peter Mates
Phosphorus Variability In The Area Of Influence Of The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, Peter Mates
LSU Master's Theses
Man-made levees along the lower Mississippi River prevent delivery of sediment from building and maintaining Louisiana’s coastal wetlands. The Mid-Barataria sediment diversions is designed to reintroduce Mississippi River water, sediment, and nutrients into the sediment-starved Barataria Basin. Phosphorus (P) is an important macronutrient for regulating primary production in coastal marine ecosystems. Wetlands can serve as a sink or source for phosphorus to the overlying water column through various retention and release processes, dependent on concentration. Louisiana coastal systems can be phosphorus limited due to much higher concentrations of bioavailable Nitrogen in river water. The high soluble molar N:P ( >50:1) …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
The widespread occurrence of lower Eocene chert and porcellanite has been viewed as a major paleoceanographic issue since the advent of ocean drilling, and both biotic and abiotic forcings have been proposed to explain it. We present a reconstruction of indurated siliceous sediment (ISS) and preserved biosiliceous sediment (PBS) occurrences in the Atlantic Ocean through the Paleocene and Eocene (~66 through 34 Ma). ISS and PBS distributions reveal dissimilar temporal trends, with the peak of ISS occurrences coinciding with the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum, in line with previous studies. PBS occurrences show a generally increasing trend culminating between 44 and …

Biology Faculty Research
Few studies have focused on the relationships between vegetation and soil seed banks on small islands. To better understand the pattern and regeneration potential of seed banks on tropical coral islands, we measured environmental factors and the species composition, and species richness of soil seed banks and vegetation along a gradient from the center to the edges on East Island in the South China Sea. The results showed that the similarity between the species composition of vegetation and seed banks increased from the center to the edge. In the center, species richness in both vegetation and seed banks was positively …

The Medium-Term And Event-Scale Tropical Cyclone-Driven Morphodynamics Of A Vulnerable Barrier System With Emphasis On The Role Of Backbarrier Wetlands, Cody Lee Johnson I
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Coastal mainland barriers and barrier islands provide the first line of defense against oceanic and meteorological forces. Coastal morphological change, which may degrade these barrier's defensive capabilities, occurs over a range of time scales, from geological epochs (>1000 years) to hours and seconds. Coastal morphological change at a vulnerable, but economically strategic, barrier system---the Caminada-Moreau Headlands, Louisiana---is investigated in terms of tropical cyclone impacts and their effects over a 15 year LIDAR survey time series. Analysis of the barrier's three-dimensional morphodynamics at medium-term (decadal) time scales reveals that, while subaerial volume was approximately conserved through time, the impact of …
