Burn injury is a unique trauma. The inflammatory process initiated with burn injury adversely influences all of the Starling equation variables, resulting in increased transvascular fluid filtration, so that oedema as a product of burn injury is more readily formed than in other forms of trauma. Localised wound oedema forms due to minor burn injury, with increasing systemic oedema associated with increased size of burn. It is now recognised that a marked inflammatory and immune response is created with non-severe burn injury, indicating a systemic component with all burns. Non-communicable, chronic diseases are highly prevalent in the United States, reducing the quality of life for those affected and contributing to the majority of the nation’s healthcare expenditure. These conditions include, among others, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disease. Purpose: The purpose of this case is to illustrate the best available evidence to provide early therapeutic intervention for a critically ill patient presenting with cardiovascular and pulmonary complications due to multi-system compromise. Case Description: A 19-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis and necrotizing pneumonia. He experienced numerous additional medical complications ultimately leading to tracheostomy, delirium, critical illness myopathy, and quadrilateral amputation secondary to necrotizing fasciitis and critical limb ischemia following prolonged veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). Purpose: This study was designed to determine if visual feedback via a laser pointer would enhance quality of lumbar mobility exercise in quadruped. A secondary aim of this study was to compare mobility assessed using the valid and reliable Modified-Modified Schober Test (MMST) to mobility measured indirectly using the laser pointer.
