Objective

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether high baseline pain predicts impairment outcomes in grip strength or wrist range of motion (ROM) at one year after a distal radius fracture (DRF). Impairments occur for less than 15% of patients.

Methods:

In this cohort study patients with a DRF were recruited from a hand clinic in London, Ontario. This data was collected at two evaluation time points: at baseline (within the first 10 days after fracture) and at one year after fracture. ND is one of the standard procedures for treating HNC, which results in many complications and dysfunctions that can have an effect on a patient’s QOL.

Increased quadratus lumborum activation and decreased gluteal activation may lead to lateral pelvic drop and increased hip adduction and internal rotation during single-leg exercises. These activation patterns and motions are associated with low back pain or lower extremity injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if mechanically restricting hip adduction and internal rotation of the femur affected muscle activation. Twenty female track and field athletes performed single-leg squats and step-ups, and the quadratus lumborum, gluteus medius and maximus muscles activations were measured with surface electromyography. Objective: The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the inter-rater reliability of the McKenzie System of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) when classifying patients with musculoskeletal knee pain using clinical vignettes. Methods: This study was divided into two phases. First, ten clinicians experienced in the use of MDT were randomly recruited to write a total of 60 clinical vignettes based upon the initial assessment of past patients with knee pain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is evidence to support conducting a larger randomized control trial (RCT) to compare the non-operative treatment of Achilles tendon (AT) ruptures with or without Autologous Conditioned Plasma (ACP®). Twenty-four patients were randomized to receive an ACP® or saline injection within seven days and again at two weeks post-rupture. Tendon healing was longitudinally evaluated using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Functional and patient-reported quality of life measures were also assessed. This thesis describes the development of a wearable mechatronic brace for upper limb rehabilitation that can be used at any stage of motion training after surgical reconstruction of brachial plexus nerves. The results of the mechanical design and the work completed towards finding the best torque transmission system are presented herein. This thesis investigated the short term and long term outcomes of patients who underwent treatment for lateral epicondylosis (LE). The first manuscript compared the immediate effects of counterforce brace versus kinesiotaping on pain free grip during a repetitive upper extremity reaching task in thirty patients (n=30) with LE. The study found kinesiotape to be superior over bracing as it not only improved immediate pain free grip strength by 17.5% but also maintained this during activity as compared to brace which had a smaller improvement of 9.3%. This thesis aimed to determine the psychometric properties and applications of sensory threshold tools and outcome measures in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). The first chapter is a psychometric study that defines clinically important difference (CID), construct validity and responsiveness of touch and vibration threshold tools and in the Symptoms Severity Scale (SSS). The study found the CID for the PSSD and for the SSS was 0.15g/mm² and 0.50 respectively. The objective of this dissertation was to provide an initial description of self-presentation in injury rehabilitation (i.e., physiotherapy). To accomplish this, one qualitative and two quantitative studies were conducted. Study 1 determined whether self-presentational concerns were present in this setting. Female (n = 134) and male (n = 54) undergraduate students with a mean age of 20.64 years (SD = 1.99) completed measures of Social Physique Anxiety (SPA; Hart et al., 1989), self-presentational concerns, and preferences for features of the social and physical physiotherapy environment.
