Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The elimination of Native peoples and the enslavement of Africans in the U.S. more than qualify as acts of historical state sponsored genocide. A feature of both genocides is that they ended as institutional practices but have continued culturally and psychologically. The primary contemporary legacy of these genocides is racism which reinforces historical trauma and grief. Suggestions are made for how healing for Native and African Americans can begin despite ongoing racism. This includes psychological counseling for White Americans with beliefs in White supremacy. Effects Of Quantitative Literacy On Healthcare Decision-Making: An Aural Context, Robert G. Root, Sonia Bhala

Numeracy

We propose a relationship between sensory modality, numerical formatting, and performance on a survey simulating healthcare decision-making. We examine the current literature on aural health literacy, and specifically aural literacy coupled with health numeracy. We then create a survey instrument called the Bhala test for this purpose and demonstrate that it is moderately internally consistent and provides results that correlate with the NUMi assessment, a widely accepted measure of health numeracy. There has been a recent expansion of community-based coalitions to address issues related to youth substance use. Research on their overall effectiveness, however, has produced mixed results. Recommendations to improve coalition success have emphasized the high-quality implementation of evidence-based programs targeting specific community needs. Coalitions vary extensively, however, in their organization and functioning. In addition, the lack of a universally accepted theoretical framework to understand coalition functioning has led to inconsistencies in the coalition research and the specific constructs used to describe coalition functioning.

Florida Covering Kids & Families

Objectives: Assess the outreach and enrollment strategies implemented by Florida Community Health Centers, Inc. (FCHC) to enroll eligible but not insured community members in Medicaid and other benefits programs.

Methods: Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 staff members and patients, conducted ethnographic observations, administered a short staff survey, and collected outreach related print materials for analysis. FCHC, Inc. provided enrollment numbers to compliment qualitative interview data about the program’s impact. Data were analyzed using Atlas.ti.

Results: Results suggest that FCHC’s outreach and enrollment model increases healthcare access for eligible, low-income and hard-to-reach patients in their service area who face barriers …
