The purpose of this study was to identify reactions and adjustments to the altered body image following radical mastectomy. It was felt that nurses could be of more assistance to women facing this experience if they knew and understood the common reactions which occur.

Other studies have indicated that major areas of adjustment focus upon dress and appearance. Sexual and social relationships, and curiosity of others. The disruption of a body image makes necessary certain adjustments in the individual's perceptions of himself.

Counselors frequently use batteries of psychological tests in helping students to select appropriate educational and occupational choices. The task of interpreting scores on a battery of tests to students is not at any time a simple undertaking. The trend toward emphasis on the importance of the relationship among the various scores in a battery of tests, has further complicated test interpretation.

Vocational choice theories suggest an interrelationship between vocational interests and personality characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of selected drugs in reducing the hyperactivity end increasing the attention span of a ten-year old child who had been medically diagnosed as having brain damage.

The evaluation of the effects of three drugs, Chlordiazepoxide (librium), Fluphenasine Hydrochloride (Prolixin), Thioridazine (Mellaril), and a combination of Mellaril and Methylphenidate Hydrochloride (Ritalin), was made by a psychiatrist after consideration of (1) written observations of the child’s school activities during a two-hour period, (2) a tabulation of data based on the observations, (3) reports made by the parents and teacher of the …

One component of an MMPI Ego Strength Scale (Es) definition, personal adaptability, was investigated by behavioral, conscious, and fantasy measures of persistence. Male and female, high and low Es subjects, did not differ on these measures. Measures of persistence alone may be inadequate samples of the personal adaptability component of Es.

However, little research attention has been given to the impact of a superintendent upon an institution. One reason may be that only rarely is an institution's stewardship uncomplicated by a past history. This case report is of the first-year operation of a correctional institution for adolescent delinquent girls. The development of an Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet consisting of forty-five items is a major portion of this study.

The Adaptive Behavior Rating Sheet was administered to a sample of ninety patients who, at the time of administration, had been in the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC) between one year six months and two years six months.

This paper contains the statistical results of a "buckshot" congruent validation study of one objective TAT scoring variable, Perceptual Organization (PO). PO was developed from personality theory and from an explicit rationale for the construction of scoring systems for projective techniques. PO is scored from a five card, short-form, TAT set which yields scores comparable to a 20 card set. A series of concurrent validation studies culminated in a manual for application of the scoring system in which PO is one variable. PO is a reliable score (scorer reliability; test-retest) and valid for prediction of clinical diagnosis (current validity). That …

Summary and Conclusions

Ten male schizophrenic patients and their control subjects were matched on the variables age, education, and socioeconomic status by occupation. The Pascal-Jenkins Behavioral Scales (Pascal & Jenkins, 1960b) were used to investigate the stimulus situations presented by grandparents, parents, and siblings in the first ten years of the subjects’ lives. The experiment was replicated with ten additional experimental subjects and their controls.

The stimulus categories “Mother” and “Father” were found to be highly significant in both experiments. This suggested that the schizophrenic patients had more general deprivation of needs by parents in the early years. Specifically defined …

The College of Forest, Range and Wildlife Management (hereafter referred to as the College of Forestry) at Utah State University has been concerned for some time with the problem of selecting from the applicants to their school the ones whom they think will be able to complete the requirements for graduation. The large number of freshman students placed on probation at the end of the fall quarter and of succeeding quarters each year fives some idea of the magnitude of the problem. It is not unusual for 40 or 50 percent of the entering freshmen to be in this category.

In this study an effort was made to determine, in part, if the fears of persons who have been decrying the use of subliminal stimulation in advertising were realistic. Accepting the work of other scholars that this phase of perception does exist, this writer attempted to explore one facet of the problem with this hypothesis: persons who receive subliminal stimuli will be more apt to consciously recall the stimuli if they are aware that the stimuli are being given.
