Perceptions And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic College Students, Racquel Vera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as a serious, growing problem on college campuses. IPV rates among college students exceed estimates reported for the general population. Few studies have examined the impact of IPV among the Hispanic college student (HCS) population or explored how HCSs perceive and experience IPV.

Focusing on young adults (ages 18 to 25 years), this mixed methods study was designed to explore the perceptions and experiences of IPV focusing on levels of victimization and perpetration in relation to gender role attitudes and beliefs, exposure to parental IPV, acculturation, and religiosity. A sample of 120 HCSs was …

Discharge Checklist To Enhance Rn Role And Prevent Unnecessary Readmissions, Rachel Keene Dec 2013

Discharge Checklist To Enhance Rn Role And Prevent Unnecessary Readmissions, Rachel Keene

Rachel Keene, RN, MSN

Discharge is included in every patient's plan of care. It is considered a basic procedure but, without a clear definition of each provider's responsibilities during discharge, duplication of tasks and errors of omission occur (Byrnes et al., 2009; Gawande, 2009). On a medical unit in a Silicon Valley hospital, RNs (Registered Nurse) are often inundated with auxiliary tasks in the hours before discharge. This is partly due to their proximity to the patient, but is mainly from the lack of a standard RN discharge procedure. Such norms jeopardize the RN's ability to provide care and can increase hospital readmissions (Jack …

Background and Purpose: Nurse researchers and practicing nurses need reliable and valid instruments to measure key clinical concepts. The purpose of this research was to develop an innovative method to measure dimensions of wellness among older adults. Method: A sample of 5,604 community-dwelling older adults was drawn from members of the COLLAGE consortium. The Wellness Assessment Tool (WEL) of the COLLAGE assessment system provided the data used to create the scores. Application of the Rasch analysis and Masters' partial credit method resulted in logit values for each item within the five dimensions of wellness as well as logit values for …

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker Nov 2013

Intraosseous Vascular Access For Alert Patients, Stacie Hunsaker

Faculty Publications

Nurses are often faced with the challenge of starting an IV line in a patient who is dehydrated, has suffered trauma, or is in shock. Even the efforts of the most skilled clinician may fail, while valuable time is lost. Intraosseous access is a rapid, safe, and effective route for delivering fluids and medications, and is recommended by numerous professional and specialty organizations for both pediatric and adult patients. Yet many clinicians remain unaware of the procedure. This article outlines the procedure and devices used, describes support for use in the literature, and discusses various considerations and nursing implications.

Nurses’ Learning And Conceptualization Of Technology Used In Practice, Richard G. Booth Oct 2013

Nurses’ Learning And Conceptualization Of Technology Used In Practice, Richard G. Booth

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

How nurses conceptualize and learn about health technology used in practice was examined in this qualitative, interpretive-descriptive study. Traditionally, conceptualizations of technology used in the nursing profession have been viewed from either socially- or technically- centric perspectives that have clouded the real nature of nurse-technology interactions. For instance, current perspectives examining nurses’ use of technology typically ignore or minimize socio-technical considerations impacting technology acceptance and adoption by nurses. A research approach that embraced the mingling of social and material (sociomaterial) actors was used to address the following research questions: (a) How do nurses conceptualize health technology used in practice?, and, …

Health Literacy Of Individuals Living With Parkinson's Disease, Nicole D. Leblanc

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In the past two decades, there has been an increased interest in the development of self-management programs for people with chronic diseases. Fundamental to chronic disease management is adequate literacy and health literacy skills. Research on the health literacy skills of individuals managing Parkinson’s disease (PD) is seemingly absent from the research literature. The purpose of this study was to assess the health literacy skills of older adults managing PD and to examine the relationships of functional health literacy, self-efficacy, social support, and empowerment in this population. Using a cross-sectional design, this study surveyed 33 older adults living with PD …

The Advanced Practice Nurse And Patient-Centered Medical Home: Maintaining Patient Focus, Meeting The Institute For Healthcare Improvement Triple Aim Through The Electronic Health Record, Aileen Teresa Twomey

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

The Federal Government enacted the Heath Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) in 2009, which incentivized providers to use electronic health records (EHR) for meaningful use (MU); the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) stems from the Act. Research by the National Council on Quality Assurance (NCQA) shows that primary care practices have a positive influence on the health of patients, families and communities. These positive influences are related to their ability to deliver first-contact access, and to develop long-term therapeutic relationships that focus on the person rather than the disease, improving patient health outcomes and reducing health care …

Femoroacetabular Impingement: A Guide To Diagnosis In Primary Care, Alec Rimmasch Jr., Patricia K. Ravert

Faculty Publications

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has been a diagnosis for approximately a decade in the medical field. Although FAI was once considered uncommon, it is now documented as 1 of the most common hip disorders. FAI is a variance or overgrowth within the femoral head neck space, acetabular ring, labrum, or cartilage. Patients with FAI frequently present in a general practice setting and endure months of pain and physical therapy before a correct diagnosis is ascertained. Understanding FAI and appropriate treatment and diagnostic procedures will facilitate early diagnosis in the primary care setting, providing the best chance for patient recovery.

Underutilization Of Primary Care Providers In Treating Opiate Addiction, Jennifer Jenkinson, Patricia K. Ravert

Faculty Publications

There are inadequate numbers of care providers or treatment programs to treat opioid abuse. Although many primary care nurse practitioners care for patients who are dependent on or abuse opioids, they are not allowed to prescribe the schedule 3 medications to treat them. This option is available to primary care physicians with additional training. This article discusses the effectiveness of opioid substitution therapy in a primary care setting, the patient populations, patient satisfaction, and barriers preventing primary care providers from providing treatment to opioid patients. Nurse practitioners can help overcome some of these barriers and improve access to this underserved …

Cultural Aspects Of Latino Early Childhood Obesity, Lauren Clark, Susan L. Johnson, Mary E. O'Connor, Jane H. Lassetter

Faculty Publications

The problem of Latino childhood obesity is well known, and experts agree that the sooner it is addressed in a child’s life, the better. Strong evidence from nationwide studies suggests that obesity begins in infancy for Mexican Americans. National data demonstrate the dramatic increase in weight-for-recumbent length above the 95th percentile (using the NCHS growth chart) among Mexican American children between National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) (Ogden et al., 2006). High rates of childhood obesity affect the long-term health potential of children, since childhood obesity tracks into …

Waking Up To Safety: An Examination Of Work Hour Guideline Implementation And Education For Registered Nurses, Bonnie J. Schleder

Ed.D. Dissertations

The link between health care worker fatigue and adverse events is inseparable. Errors made by registered nurses correlated with work duration, overtime and the number of adverse events (Page 2004). To promote patient safety, nurses must remain vigilant. This study determined if work hour guidelines and education regarding safety risks affected nurse work hours, the use of fatigue countermeasures, and patient outcomes. The researcher explored survey data (n=597), actual work hours, patient safety events, and quality outcomes. Data collected demonstrated nurses work hours exceeded recommendations for a safe environment. The introduction of voluntary work guidelines and education did …
