Hospital-Based Nurse Practitioner Practice: An Exploration Of Interprofessional Teams., Christina J. Hurlock-Chorostecki

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nurse practitioner (NP) roles within hospital teams are evolving worldwide. However, understanding of their practice within the context of interprofessional (IP) teamwork remains limited. This two-phase study undertaken within Ontario, Canada provides a new multi-perspective understanding of the value of NP practice within IP hospital teams. Constructivist grounded theory, a modification of the classic methodology, guided an interpretive approach based in exploration of process and meaning construction, privilege and power exposure, and juxtaposition with extant theory. A conceptual rendering of NP practice was determined through supplemental analysis of 30 team member focus groups. This new perspective emerged as three practice …

Doing whatever it took to create security and stability for her family, Tootsie worked multiple jobs to feed her brood. She was a social butterfly who always tended to others and modeled the value of caring throughout her life.

The Call Of Nursing: Stories From The Frontlines Of Nursing, Melissa Erickson Jan 2013

The Call Of Nursing: Stories From The Frontlines Of Nursing, Melissa Erickson

Book Chapters

The Call of Nursing is not a typical book about nurses. It takes us behind the curtain of silence that often hangs between us -- the patients who rely on the health care system -- and the women and men who form the backbone of that system, and who are entrusted with our intimate care.

Melissa Erickson:

I worked in Women Care at a large hospital in Minneapolis which delivers more babies than any other hospital in the state. Women Care is a level IV obstetric care facility. Primarily, I cared for high-risk mothers and babies there, including high-order multiples. …

Methadone is increasingly being used for palliative cancer patients for pain management. Physicians are "rotating" opioids to help reduce opioid side effects, and help increase pain response due to tolerance of another opioid. Methadone has been compared to other opioids in studies in which it has been rotated with another opioid. The studies compared the adverse effects, cost, and the rate of success to achieve adequate pain management.

Evaluating Discharge Readiness Of Patients At A Primary Stroke Center, Amanda Green

DNP Projects

The diagnosis of stroke is very prevalent in healthcare and it is estimated that someone in the United States suffers from a stroke every 40 seconds (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). Nurses' Attitudes Towards Drug-Seekers In The Emergency Room, Megan E. Gernt

Master's Theses, Dissertations, Graduate Research and Major Papers Overview

Emergency department patients often present with a chief complaint of pain. There is a unique population of patients who present with this chief complaint in an effort to obtain narcotics for non-medical use. This population is often referred to as drug-seekers and there is little information available to define what exactly nurses mean when they use this term. This study utilized a descriptive survey design to gain a better understanding of nurses’ use of the term drug-seeker. Respondents agreed on a variety of behaviors that lead them to identify patients as drug-seeking and expressed a frustration with this population of …
