Problem: Psychological impact of trauma on healthcare workers is profound, and if left unaddressed can debilitate its victims, depress morale, and undermine safety culture. When adverse events occur and focus is placed on providing care and support to patients and their families, the emotional support needs of healthcare workers must also be acknowledged.

While nurses in direct patient care are serving a growing minority population, nurse executives are not racially representative of the patient population. This integrated review sought to understand the benefits of formal mentorship. Results included 2 themes: increasing diversity and self-efficacy through formal mentorship. The themes are explored in the literature. Implications for organizations and leaders will be discussed.

Background: In 2008, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) set a goal that by 2020, 90% of healthcare decisions would originate from the best evidence available. This goal remains intangible for many organizations. Background: Interruptions occur in high frequency in the critical care hospital setting.

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of work interruption for the critical care nurse and to examine ways to mitigate predominant, non-urgent interruptions.

Methods: The nurse interrupted project followed the Lean methodology framework to identify which high-frequency interrupters to address. Baseline assessment of the intensive care unit (ICU) nurses identified alarms and patient family member calls as predominant causes of interruption. Problem. In a 21-hospital region of a 39-hospital integrated health system, CNE turnover peaked at 63% (12 CNEs) in 2015. Interviews were conducted in 2019 with 12 CNEs across the region to understand potential issues related to CNE job satisfaction. Responses revealed concerns regarding empowerment, alignment, work-life balance, information transparency/sharing, and recognition. While identifying a solution to address CNE concerns, the organization experienced successive crisis events during a 12-month period that included a record-setting wildfire, multiple labor union strikes, and a novel pandemic. Problem: Inaccurate and incomplete pressure injury (PrI) assessment and documentation leads to inaccurate reporting of PrI quality reporting measures to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Inaccurate, incomplete documentation of pressure injuries and wounds adversely affects the quality of care, financial reimbursement, and hospital reputation as well as increasing the risk of litigation to medical providers. Accordingly, with the reduction of nurse burnout, there has also been a reduction of compassion fatigue. Problem: Retention of assistant nurse managers (ANMs) was identified as a concern from interviews with executive leadership and ANMs employed at a large hospital within a Northern California integrated health system. The nurse leader orientation training was reviewed, with gaps identified in conflict management and team building.

Context: The attrition rate of U.S. nurse managers in 2010 was 8.3%, higher than executive nurse leaders, with replacement costs equal to 75% - 125% of a nurse manager’s salary (Loveridge, 2017). Problem. Patients with non-conditional cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), which lack magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) components, are unable to undergo MRI.

Context. The Heart Rhythm Society guidelines for patient device management and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requirements for persons with specific expertise in implanted permanent devices to manage CIEDs during MRI spurred policy, procedure and staffing changes.

Interventions. The evidence-based change-of-practice project comprised of workflow development, policy and procedure changes, implementation of required staffing support to manage the CIED during an MRI.
