Creating A Pipeline To Increase Diversity In Executive Leadership Positions, Trarina Harris Dec 2021

Creating A Pipeline To Increase Diversity In Executive Leadership Positions, Trarina Harris

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Minority nurse leader presence at the executive leadership level is suboptimal, with insufficient pathways to increase representation. The lack of diversity in executive leadership threatens efforts to improve patient care and reduce disparities (Jerome Harris, 2021).

Local Problem: Practices to increase the diversity of executive nurse leaders at a pediatric medical center have had very little to no impact. Frontline nurses and nurse executives are not racially or ethnically representative of the increasingly minority patient populations served.

Context: As a commitment to increasing workforce diversity, the medical center developed an executive-level Racial Equity Taskforce, which aligned with the …

The Reality For Minorities Exploring Nurse Executive Leadership Roles: An Integrated Review, Trarina Harris

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

While nurses in direct patient care are serving a growing minority population, nurse executives are not racially representative of the patient population. This integrated review sought to understand the benefits of formal mentorship. Results included 2 themes: increasing diversity and self-efficacy through formal mentorship. The themes are explored in the literature. Implications for organizations and leaders will be discussed.

A Compelling Case For Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Development Programs: An Integrative Review, Stacy Alves Dec 2020

A Compelling Case For Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Development Programs: An Integrative Review, Stacy Alves

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Background: In 2008, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) set a goal that by 2020, 90% of healthcare decisions would originate from the best evidence available. This goal remains intangible for many organizations. Despite reporting quality and safety as a top organizational priority, a survey of 276 Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) found that only roughly 50% of the CNEs said that EBP was practiced in their hospitals only “somewhat” or “not at all” (Melnyk, Gallagher‐Ford, Thomas, Troseth, Wyngarden, Kzalacha, 2016). Many organizations struggle to systematically integrate EBP into practice (Melnyk et al., 2018; Warren et al., 2016a). The Advancing Research and …

Preceptor Education And Structured Onboarding Process, Charles Morato

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Staff nurse retention is an ongoing problem for this intensive care unit (ICU). Through exit interviews from staff who left, inadequate onboarding and education made them feel unprepared for their job and not part of the team. The preceptors on the unit have never been trained on the roles and responsibilities of being a preceptor. The current onboarding process consists of pairing new hires with a preceptor who either happens to be willing to do it that day or someone who has been there the longest. There is no consistency or personalizing the orientation information to the new hire. …

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program, Rozlyn Bauer Dec 2017

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program, Rozlyn Bauer

Master's Projects and Capstones

The purpose of this project is to help increase retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRN) at a large community medical center. The medical center loses approximately 20 NLRNs per year which is costly for the medical center. The loss of NLRN can be attributed to decreased job satisfaction, poor nursing competence and lateral violence between the nursing staff. Evidence shows that mentorship is a proven, evidence-based approach to solving these issues and more (Hodgson & Scanlan, 2013).

Not only can mentorship help increase retention, address lateral violence, increase job satisfaction and nursing competence but, it can also help enhance …

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses At A Large Community Medical Center, Javier Moreno Dec 2017

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses At A Large Community Medical Center, Javier Moreno

Master's Projects and Capstones

With mentorship being a key to addressing several issues at a large community medical center, the leadership of the institution engaged with students of a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Program to conduct a thorough assessment. This paper addresses the charge for a standardized and formalized evidence-based approach to a nurse mentorship program to address key areas that enhance not only the work environment but also the quality of care. These key areas include the 1) promotion of professional development and engagement via 2) acquisition of skills necessary to achieve nursing competence, 3) address lateral violence, 4) increase in staff retention …
