MSN Capstone Projects
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that affects the joints; without proper treatment and management, RA leads to the destruction of joint function. The standard of care for RA includes medications such as biologic therapy and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. An often-overlooked area of disease management is the implementation of exercise programs for patients with RA. Exercise is known to decrease systemic inflammation, symptoms of depression, and combat fatigue – all common symptoms reported by patients with RA.
Standard of care for patients with RA does not currently include lifestyle management factors such as diet, exercise, and cessation of …

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic inflammatory disease seen in pediatric rheumatology. Despite advances in biologic therapy, many children with JIA will experience morbidity. Treat to Target is a treatment paradigm that involves setting a target of disease activity, using shared decision making, and incorporating clinical decision support. Our clinic aimed to set a treatment target on 50% of eligible JIA patients by December 31, 2019.

Purpose. Successful adolescent health care transition (HCT) is a vital process in providing developmentally appropriate care and minimizing negative outcomes, especially in adolescents with special health care needs. The purpose of this mixed-methods quality improvement project was to pilot the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) tool in a pediatric rheumatology clinic and assess its utility as a transition tool as well as to inquire about specific patient and family-based transition needs.
Methods. The TRAQ tool and follow-up survey were administered in dyads to all established pediatric rheumatology patients between the ages of 12-18, and one caregiver, who presented to the …

Use Of Dietary And Herbal Supplements In Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Sharon Denise Mcdonald
Use Of Dietary And Herbal Supplements In Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Sharon Denise Mcdonald
Dissertations
Over the past several decades, older adults with Osteoarthritis (OA) have increasingly used more natural products in an effort to manage chronic pain. The theoretical framework for this study was the Lazarus and Folkman transactional theory of stress and coping. This framework was chosen based on the belief that older adults with OA are taking natural products as an active problem solving coping strategy to manage the pain, disability, and alterations they experience in their health related quality life including functional status, physical symptoms, emotional health, and social functioning. Older adults also take prescription medications for Osteoarthritis and a variety …

Ginger has been used for 1000s of years as a food and medicine; it is likely one of the most ancient remedies valued by humans. Ancient Indian and Chinese cultures reportedly used ginger for a wide variety of conditions and modern day research has found it effective as an anti-emetic and anti-inflammatory agent, when taken internally. Random controlled trials using ginger extract have been found effective in relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the primary cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability in Western cultures. Current management is primarily through the use of anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication, with cortisone injections and …
