Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Introduction: Anakinra is being empirically considered for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The aim is to assess the efficacy of anakinra treatment on inflammatory marker reduction, including c-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations, serum ferritin, and serum d-dimer levels.
Methods: Adhering to PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across the following databases from December 2019 until January 10, 2022: PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. The following keywords were employed: Anakinra, COVID*, SARS-CoV-2, inflammatory, CRP, D-dimer, Ferritin, hematological, laboratory, clinical, trials. The findings were collated and presented in a tabulated manner, and statistically analyzed using Review …

Telemedicine For Rheumatology Patients In Covid-19 Pandemic: Perspectives Of Patients, Muhammad Mehmood Riaz, Saad Bin Zafar Mahmood, Noreen Nasir

Section of Internal Medicine

Telemedicine use for patients with autoimmune rheumatic conditions during the pandemic mandates better characterization. We conducted a telephonic survey on patients who consulted rheumatologists remotely to determine their attitudes toward telemedicine. The study was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan which is a lower-middle-income country. Descriptive analyses were performed. Fifty patients visited tele-rheumatology clinic, 35 (70.0%) were female with a mean (SD) age of 47.6 (18.1) years. Majority (27, 54.0%) learned about telemedicine from hospital website and outpatient clinic desk or helpline. Lack of examination was the biggest concern with teleconsultation (18, 22.2%). Most …

Localization Of Hand And Wrist Anatomic Structures Among Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation Residents: Implication Of Ultrasonography In Palpation Skill Verification, Se Won Lee, Phuong Uyen Le, Craig Van Dien, Stefanie Lai, Eric Aguila Apr 2021

Localization Of Hand And Wrist Anatomic Structures Among Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation Residents: Implication Of Ultrasonography In Palpation Skill Verification, Se Won Lee, Phuong Uyen Le, Craig Van Dien, Stefanie Lai, Eric Aguila

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Objective

The objective of this cross-sectional study is to evaluate the accuracy of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) resident palpation skills of hand and wrist joint and soft tissue structures using ultrasonography (US) verification.

Methods

PM&R residents palpated hand and wrist anatomic structures in an outpatient musculoskeletal (MSK) clinic. Once the presumed structures were localized, residents marked a one centimeter size circle on the overlying skin with an ink marker. The accuracy of the circle over the joint line and soft tissue structures was verified using US.

Results

Overall palpation accuracy for 16 joint line and soft tissue structures was …

Osteopontin: A Bridge Between Bone And The Immune System, Ellen M. Gravallese Apr 2015

Osteopontin: A Bridge Between Bone And The Immune System, Ellen M. Gravallese

Ellen M. Gravallese

The molecular mechanisms underlying the putative role of osteopontin in the chronic inflammatory disease rheumatoid arthritis are unclear. A study in a murine model of arthritis now demonstrates that a specific antibody directed against the exposed osteopontin epitope SLAYGLR is capable of preventing inflammatory cell infiltration in arthritic joints.

The Role Played By Cell-Substrate Interactions In The Pathogenesis Of Osteoclast-Mediated Peri-Implant Osteolysis, Zhenxin Shen, Tania N. Crotti, Kevin P. Mchugh, Kenichiro Matsuzaki, Ellen M. Gravallese, Benjamin E. Bierbaum, Steven R. Goldring Apr 2015

The Role Played By Cell-Substrate Interactions In The Pathogenesis Of Osteoclast-Mediated Peri-Implant Osteolysis, Zhenxin Shen, Tania N. Crotti, Kevin P. Mchugh, Kenichiro Matsuzaki, Ellen M. Gravallese, Benjamin E. Bierbaum, Steven R. Goldring

Ellen M. Gravallese

Prosthetic wear debris-induced peri-implant osteolysis is a major cause of aseptic loosening after total joint replacement. In this condition, wear particles released from the implant components induce a granulomatous inflammatory reaction at the interface between implant and adjacent bone, leading to progressive bone resorption and loss of fixation. The present study was undertaken to characterize definitively the phenotype of osteoclast-like cells associated with regions of peri-implant focal bone resorption and to compare the phenotypic features of these cells with those of mononucleated and multinucleated cells associated with polyethylene wear particles. Peri-implant tissues were obtained from patients undergoing hip revision surgery …

Sympathetic Nerve Modulation Of Joint Pathology In Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis, Carlo Anthony Wood Dec 2013

Sympathetic Nerve Modulation Of Joint Pathology In Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis, Carlo Anthony Wood

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: There is increasing data suggesting a net increase in sympathetic tone plays an important role in rheumatoid arthritis. Several studies have reported altered distribution and density of autonomic nerves in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and animal models for the disease. This provides anatomical evidence that supports a neurally-mediated drive in inflammation and joint destruction. Methods: Adult rats were injected with complete Freund’s adjuvant. At 12 days post immunization, animals were randomly placed into a drug treatment group (SH1293, which interacts with - and ß2-ARs), an adjuvant arthritic group, or a control group. These animals were sacrificed at 14, 21, …
