Conference Presentation Abstracts

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and constitute important thrombotic risk factors. VTE risk is especially high if these patients require the intensive care unit (ICU). Precise and user-friendly diagnostic tools that incorporate complex interactions between clinical data and laboratory results to predict VTE among patients with MPN in the ICU are lacking. We hypothesize that machine-learning algorithms could be used to predict VTE and guide thromboprophylaxis in this population.

METHODS

This was an observational, retrospective study using routine clinical practice data from MIMIC-IV, a freely accessible electronic health record database. We analyzed patients with an …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: Breast radiotherapy (RT) is the standard of care for patients with early-stage breast cancer (BC) who undergo breast-conserving surgery (BCS). However, the magnitude of benefit of RT is less clear in BCS patients with low-risk disease who receive effective systemic therapy. Among patients with early-stage HER2-positive (HER2+) BC, 10-year locoregional recurrence has been reported as low as 1.5% following BCS, adjuvant chemotherapy and HER2-targeted therapy, and RT. Given these exceedingly favorable outcomes, with the addition of HER2-directed therapy, we seek to evaluate the feasibility of omitting RT among patients with early-stage HER2+ BC following BCS and appropriate systemic therapy. …

A Single Center Analysis Of Patients Undergoing Liver Resection For Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma, Nazli Begum Ozturk, Laith H. Jamil

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is the second most common primary liver cancer with increasing rates of incidence and mortality. Surgical resection with negative margins and regional lymphadenectomy is the mainstay of the treatment for patients with resectable-iCCA. Because of its rarity and low resectability rate of iCCA, prognostic markers and outcomes of patients who undergo liver resection are not well defined. We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patients undergoing liver resection for iCCA at our institution over ten years. Methods: All patients with iCCA who had liver resection between 3/2013-3/2023 at our institution were included in the study. An …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: The underlying mechanism contributing to cholestatic liver injury remains unclear. The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-17A (IL-17A) has been implicated in human cholestatic liver injury. However, mechanistic insights on how IL-17A modulates cholestatic liver injury are lacking and require further exploration in preclinical models. Herein, we examined the effects of IL-17A genetic deletion in a mouse model of cholestasis. Methods: Ageand gender-matched littermate WT and Il-17a-/- were fed intermittently on 0.1% 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC) diet or control diet (n=10, each) and standard diet for 21 days to induce cholestatic liver injury. We assessed liver inflammation, ductular reaction, and fibrosis using complementary approaches. …

Evaluation Of A Novel Lupus Anticoagulant Assay Designed To Reduce False Positive Results Due To Anticoagulation: A Retrospective Study At A Single Health System, Jessica D. Anderson, Tamara Sabih, Yuying Xing, Lili Zhao, Marc D. Smith

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: Lupus anticoagulants (LA) are antibodies directed against phospholipids/phospholipid-protein complexes involved in coagulation and are associated with thrombotic events and recurrent fetal loss. There is no gold standard test for LA, therefore at least two LA-specific tests are recommended before excluding LA. Potential testing methods involve dilute Russell viper venom time (dRVVT) and hexagonal phase phospholipid assays (HPPA); however, many of these tests are susceptible to interference with anticoagulant therapy which can lead to false positive results. In this study, we compared the performance of our current HPPA, StaClot LA (SCLA), with a novel assay reported to have relatively minimal …

Combined Smad4 And Imp3 Immunohistochemical Stains To Increase The Probability Of Diagnosing Pancreatic Adenocarcinomas In Fine-Needle Biopsies, Reenal Patel, Ashbita Pokharel, Ping L. Zhang, Zhenhong H. Qu

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Context: SMAD4 and IMP3 are useful stains in diagnosing pancreatic cancer but not perfect to reach that goal individually. We attempted to determine if using both SMAD4 and IMP3 can increase the diagnostic specificity of fine-needle biopsies (FNBs) for pancreatic adenocarcinomas, as FNBs often showed limited tissue for the morphologic evaluation.

Design: Fifteen FNBs with or without prior cytology were evaluated with both SMAD4 and IMP3 stains. Nuclear loss of SMAD4 was graded as 0 (no loss), 1–2+ (partial loss), and 3+ (total loss), whereas IMP3 was graded 0–3+ by staining intensity. Staining results were correlated with morphologic changes for …
