This benchmark project intends to decrease the rate of surgical site infections related to cesarean procedures with vaginal preparation through an evidence-based approach. Vaginal preparation is a simple technique that cleanses the vaginal walls by removing microorganisms. The goal of the benchmark project is to promote the implementation of a vaginal preparation policy across any healthcare facility that performs cesarean procedures. Vaginal preparation is intended for scheduled cases, add-on cases, and urgent cases. Introduction: The purpose of this evidence-based practice Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to prospectively evaluate the ability to alter the behavior of young adults by providing sunscreen education and thereby reduce their risk of skin cancer from sun exposure. Twenty-three collegiate athletes ages 18 to 21 years old who were on the university softball team were enrolled. To determine the effectiveness of the educational intervention, participants completed a pretest and posttest evaluation. Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are chronic lower extremity ulcers affecting older Americans. VLUs are painful and negatively affect activities of daily living. Inadequate VLU treatment can become an infectious process that can ultimately threaten limb existence. Background: Internalized stigma is defined as individuals’ acceptance of negative stereotypes created by society and then their alienation from society. Psoriasis is a dermatological disease that affects the quality of life. The study evaluated the internalized stigma and quality of life of patients diagnosed with psoriasis.

Methods: This cross sectional study enrolled 222 patients. Data were collected using the internalized stigma scale and the dermatology life quality index questionnaires. Data were analyzed using the Cronbach’s alpha.

The research showed that osteoporosis reduces mineral density in bones and can be adequately treated within a short amount of time. Symptoms include: skin tightening, stiffness and swelling of fingers, weight loss, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain. Limited scleroderma, also known as CREST syndrome, includes calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a nonmelanoma skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “BCC is the most frequently occurring form of all skin cancers. More than one out of every three new cancers is a skin cancer, and the vast majority are BCC’s” (www.skincancer.org). Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is one of the main risk factors in developing a BCC. People with a lighter skin tone are at a higher risk of developing a BCC than those with a darker skin tone.

Steven-Johnson’s Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) are both diseases mediated by hypersensitive immune reactions resulting in “full thickness epidermal necrosis” characterized by skin detachment. However, in SJS, there is only 10% skin surface area involvement whereas in TEN, over 30% of the skin becomes detached. TENS has a 50% mortality rate. Reliable measures of wound size are critical to wound healing research and clinical management. Measurement of full-thickness wounds is increasingly being done using digital images and photogrammetric software, such as VeVMD (Vista Medical, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), to estimate wound volume. The reliability of VeVMD in determining wound volume is unknown. The present study sought to examine the reliability of wound volume measurements obtained using VeVMD.

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a practice-based dermoscopy training program for dermatology healthcare providers in order to improve their technique of performing clinical skin exams for the early detection of melanomas.

The overall incidence of melanoma continues to rise. More than 75% of all skin cancer deaths are from melanoma. Advanced melanoma spreads to lymph nodes and internal organs and can result in death. One American dies from melanoma almost every hour (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2009). Early diagnosis and excision are essential to reduce morbidity and to improve patient survival.

Preliminary investigation has indicated large decreases in fetal skin permeability during the latter half of gestation (Parmley and Seeds, 1970; Treager, 1966). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the degree of skin permeability in fetal guinea pigs at various gestational stages. The test hypothesis was that these skins would show a significant decrease in permeability to tritiated water when tested at time increments through out the latter half of gestation.
