Holistic Medicine: The Journey To Health, Molly J. Lahn
Holistic Medicine: The Journey To Health, Molly J. Lahn
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
What I thought was to be a study of "alternative medicine" turned out to be an amazing discovery of not only a way of healing, but a way of life. My work is based on personal experience and supported by literature and the instruction of mentors. Over the span of a year, my experience has included three Healing Touch classes with independent practice and a nine-week class/support group for those with life-threatening illness and their caregivers. I also volunteered at a pain and stress management program at Glenwood Rehabilitation (autogenics/self- regulation training), the St. Cloud Pain Management Center (cranio-sacral therapy), …
The Effect Of Color Overlays On Oral Reading Performance, Shirley Holmes Westall
The Effect Of Color Overlays On Oral Reading Performance, Shirley Holmes Westall
Graduate Theses
A study was performed on adults taken from the Need to Read and General Education Degree programs administered by Midland College. This study utilized color overlays to ascertain the effect of the overlays on oral reading performance of subjects ascertained to have symptoms indicative of scotopic sensitivity syndrome, SSS. Adults were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups and pre-tested and post-tested with the Slosson Oral Reading Test. The experimental group received the treatment of color overlays in the post-test. Results of the study showed the null hypothesis was rejected and color overlays do affect oral reading performance of probable …
Wild Medicine: Review Of Medicinal Wild Plants Of The Prairie By Kelly Kindscher, Kathleen H. Keeler
Wild Medicine: Review Of Medicinal Wild Plants Of The Prairie By Kelly Kindscher, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
I am highly enthusiastic about this book as a reference work. It summarizes the literature on the medicinal uses for more than 103 prairie plants. For 43 species, Kindscher gives common, Indian, and scientific names; description; habitat; parts used; Indian uses; medical history; scientific research and cultivation; and information on about 100 of their relatives. Another 60 entries are condensed to 24 paragraphs. Full-page line drawings by William S. Whitney of the major species are generally excellent, and all 103 entries have distribution maps. The introduction discusses the region covered, with helpful maps. There's an index, a glossary and a …

An Overview Of Alternative Medicine: Past, Present, And Future, Pearl A. Guy
Theses
This thesis will discuss the role of alternative medicine in the United States. It will look at the history of various forms of medicine, the evolution of these practices, as well as their current role in our society.
With rising health care costs and the failure of mainstream medicine to cure diseases such as cancer and HIV, it becomes all the more important to look beyond the traditional system.
One in three people surveyed, reported using at least one form of unconventional medicine in 1990. This is a significant figure. There are very few studies currently available that focus on …

Modulation Of Rat Hepatic S9-Dependent Mutagenesis, Dna Binding, And Metabolism Of Aflatoxin B1 And Benzo[A]Pyrene By Four Chinese Medicinal Herbs, Brian Yuen Yau Wong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Extracts of the herbs Oldenlandia diffusa (OD) and Scutellaria barbata (SB) have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating liver, lung and rectal tumors while extracts of Astragalus membranaceus (AM) and Ligustrum lucidum (LL) are often used as adjuncts in cancer therapy. In this study, we determined the effects of aqueous extracts of these four herbs on aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol (BaP 7,8-DHD) and benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide (BPDE)-induced mutagenesis, mediated by enzymes in rat hepatic 9000 x g supernatant (S9), in Salmonella typhimurium TA100. We also studied the effects of these four herbs on …

Process Of Health Care Decision Making Among Khmer Immigrants, Barbara Frye
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This qualitative study examined the congruence between health beliefs and behavior as reported by 30 Cambodian (Khmer) refugee women in Southern California. Utilizing in-home interviewing in the Khmer language, data was gathered on 226 illness episodes occurring among 157 family members over an eight-month span. Informants reported a strong maternal role in health care decision making with all ages of children. Adult decision making demonstrated an individualistic pattern. Causes of illness were attributed primarily to humeral imbalances and illness avoidance behavior reflected these beliefs. Treatment was a blend of scientific and traditional medicine. Health care was accessed in settings of …

The Psychological Effects Of Exercise, Judith Rodin, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Thousands of businesses in the United States have implemented programs to promote physical fitness among their employees (Falkenberg, 1987). The programs range from company-paid memberships at private health and fitness clubs to complete work site fitness facilities. These programs have been developed not only to improve and maintain employee health but also to promote psychological well-being and productivity and to reduce absenteeism, insurance claims, and stress. Recent research focusing on the use of employee fitness programs to improve work-related behaviors suggests that these programs may improve absenteeism, job satisfaction, tenure. and health care costs, especially among female employees (Baun, Bernacki, …

The Non-Orthodox Cancer Therapy Movement: Emergent Organization In Health Care Crisis, Joseph Behar
The Non-Orthodox Cancer Therapy Movement: Emergent Organization In Health Care Crisis, Joseph Behar
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The ideology and organization of the non-orthodox cancer therapy movement are analyzed as social constructions in an area of professional ambiguity and failure. The movement articulates, integrates, and orders the personally and socially disabling consequences of health care failure in cancer. The protest activities of the movement are characterized by political opposition to medical "orthodoxy" and "monopoly." The challenges of the non-orthodox movement are generally ineffective, non-legitimated, or coopted. Yet, in providing conceptual and organizational frames for the disordering consequences of medical failure and in establishing a politically polarized deviant position in relation to conventional practice, this movement socially organizes …
