The Impact Of Interactive Music Therapy On The Pediatric Oncology Population, Kristin Moon Orrigo
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
It is an unfortunate truth that a child with cancer will experience pain or anxiety during their battle with illness. Research shows that Interactive Music Therapy is extremely effective at the bedside of hospitalized pediatric cancer patients in reducing pain (Thrane, 2013; Huang, Good, Zauszniewski, 2010; Potvin, Bradt, Kesslick, 2015; Naylor, Kingsnorth, Lamont, McKenever, 2011; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013) and anxiety (Callaghan, Dun, Baron, Barry, 2012; Thrane, 2013; Potvin et al., 2015; Docherty, Cherven, Stegenga, Ferguson, Roll, Stickler, Haase, 2012; Robb et al.,. 2008; Kemper, Bouhairie, Martin, Woods 2008; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013). In cancer centers, the demand is quickly growing for …

Herb-Drug Interaction Of Andrographolide On The Pharmacokinetics Of Carbamazepine In Rats, Elizabeth Aziz, Samuel Franklin, Ankit Pandav, Abigail Savino, Caleb Thompson, Caleb Vandyke, Ruth Choi, Elisha R. Injeti
Pharmacy and Nursing Student Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Poster Session
Objective: To determine if andrographolide (AND) impacts the pharmacokinetics of carbamazepine (CBZ).
Background: CBZ is an anticonvulsant medication that is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. AND is an over-the-counter medication that is common in Eastern cultures to treat inflammation and is a CYP enzyme inhibitor. Because CBZ is metabolized in the liver by these specific CYP enzymes, coadministration of andrographolide and CBZ could result in a herb-drug interaction.
Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats (N=12) aged between 3 months and 6 months (250-350 g) will be split into control (N=6) and treatment (N=6) groups. The treatment group will receive …

Street Drug Markets Beyond Favelas In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Elenice De Souza De Souza Oliveira, Braulio Figueiredo Alves Silva, Marcos Oliveira Prates
Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study examines whether social disorganization mechanisms that explain clusters of street drug markets in socially disorganized neighborhoods in developed countries can also help explain geographical patterns of drug dealing across neighborhoods in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Data for this study includes drug arrests from 2007 to 2011 and socio demographic data from the 2010 Census. To examine the influence of exploratory variables on drug market locations, the Negative Binominal regression model was used at two levels of analysis—the Belo Horizonte city center and other neighborhoods including favelas. The findings show that a high hot spot of street drug markets located …

“Our infant mortality rate is a national embarrassment.”1 The words seem shocking and harsh across the headline of a 2014 Washington Post article. The thought of America not only not being the best at something, but falling upsettingly behind, is a foreign concept to many who view America as a nation inferior to none. However, the statistics on infant mortality rate tell the stark truth that of 26 “wealthy” countries, the U.S. ranks last, with a sobering 6.1 deaths per 1,000 live infant births.2
Part of the Healthy People 2020 Objectives is to reduce the rate of infant …

Protocol For An Open-Label Randomized Controlled Exploratory Trial Of Homoeopathy On Dyslipidemia, Central Council For Research In Homoeopathy Ccrh
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Background and Objectives: Dyslipidemia refers to the derangements of one or many of the lipoproteins; elevations of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and/or triglycerides (TGL), or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol while elevation of lipoproteins alone is labeled as “hyperlipidemia.” It is a lifestyle disorder of concern today. Statins, fibrates, or a combination of statins with fibrates or niacin have been suggested for their beneficial role in lowering LDL-cholesterol levels, TGL, and increasing HDL-cholesterol levels, but with their adverse effects. Based on the positive results of few studies in the past, this protocol is designed to …

A Case Of Deep Vein Thrombosis With Postthrombotic Syndrome Cured By Homoeopathic Therapy, Gyandas Wadhwani
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
A 46-year-old woman consulted for right-sided deep vein thrombosis in external iliac, common femoral, superficial femoral and popliteal veins with extension along with postthrombotic syndrome. After homoeopathic consultation, she was prescribed Argentum nitricum in ascending LM potencies. Symptomatic relief was reported within 2 weeks of treatment, and gradually the quality of life improved after simultaneous reduction in pain due to other complaints of sciatica and osteoarthrosis. Venous Doppler studies repeated a year later showed complete resolution of the medical condition with homoeopathic drug therapy alone. The physical examination also revealed a reduction in limb circumference.

Adverse side effects of chemotherapy during cancer treatment have shifted considerable focus towards therapies that are not only targeted but are also devoid of toxic side effects. We evaluated the antitumorigenic activity of sulphur, and delineated the molecular mechanisms underlying sulphurinduced apoptosis in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cells. A search for the underlying mechanism revealed that the choice between the two cellular processes, NFκBp65-mediated survival and p53-mediated apoptosis, was decided by the competition for a limited pool of transcriptional coactivator protein p300 in NSCLC cells. In contrast, sulphur inhibited otherwise upregulated survival signaling in NSCLC cells by perturbing the …
The Effects Of Alpha Stimulation On Induced Anxiety, Nolan Thomas Hill
The Effects Of Alpha Stimulation On Induced Anxiety, Nolan Thomas Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anxiety is defined as an emotional and physical reaction that prepares us to confront a feared stimulus. Among the many measureable changes induced by anxiety are changes in facial electromyography (EMG), heart rate (HR), and sweat gland activity (EDG). At a pathological level anxiety interferes with cognitive processes. Currently, when anxiety crosses into the pathological level, it is treated with a variety of therapies that share in their use of periods of exposure to anxiety-inducing stimuli. Several devices have been developed to alter brain activity by transcranial electrical stimulation (TCES). One such device, Alpha-Stim®, has been shown to …

Should Primary Care Physicians Address Sleep To Improve Weight Loss In Obese Patients? A Clin-Iq, Kjersti E. Knox
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Obesity is a commonly encountered problem in the primary care setting. Simultaneously, sleep is seen to hold an increasingly important role in many components of health and wellness. A review of the literature was performed to determine if improving sleep positively impacts weight loss in obese adults. The evidence reviewed suggests that improving patients’ sleep may initially improve patient weight loss; however, current studies do not show a sustained statistically significant impact. Until higher powered and higher quality studies are completed, there are no clear evidence-based guidelines for primary care physicians to follow regarding sleep and obesity.

Essentials Of Herb-Drug Interactions In The Elderly With Cardiovascular Disease, Sulaiman Sultan, Maria Viqar, Rabaiya Ali, A. Jamil Tajik, Arshad Jahangir
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
As the number of individuals, particularly the elderly, using herbal products with prescription drugs continues to grow, the risk for adverse interactions increases but remains poorly recognized. The true incidence and nature of adverse herb reactions or herb-drug interactions remains unknown since no postmarketing surveillance mechanism exists. Adverse events are greatly underreported, and information regarding safety mainly comes from case reports and suboptimally conducted studies in a limited number of healthy young volunteers or patients with limited comorbidities. Therefore, convincing evidence for the safety of herbal products in the elderly is lacking, and the true magnitude of problems that herb-drug …
The Role Of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Management Of Chronic Pain: A Biopsychosocial Approach, John Burns, Tiffany A. Mullen
The Role Of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Management Of Chronic Pain: A Biopsychosocial Approach, John Burns, Tiffany A. Mullen
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
The National Institute of Medicine revealed that chronic pain affects more than 100 million adults in the United States, citing chronic pain as the leading reason patients seek medical care. Pain is also an extremely costly problem, with $635 billion per year spent nationally, more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. The biomedical model of chronic pain management has largely revolved around the use of narcotic analgesics for pain control. Unfortunately, this corresponds to a growth in the rate of abuse, misuse and overdose of these drugs. Additionally, there is an inherent failure rate to the myriad procedures used …

Introduction We previously published the case of a woman taking warfarin who was found to have scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C. This led us to hypothesize that patients taking warfarin who consume a diet limited in vitamin K rich foods may be at risk for other nutrient deficiencies. To test our hypothesis, we studied dietary nutrient intake in patients taking warfarin compared to patients with heart disease not taking warfarin. Methods The warfarin (n=59) and control groups (n=24) comprised convenience samples of patients with heart disease over age 60 years. Patients completed a three-day food …
