Incorporating Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer-Aided Drug Design, Yeonji Ji Sep 2024

Incorporating Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer-Aided Drug Design, Yeonji Ji

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Advancements in computational techniques have revolutionized structure-based drug design, substantially improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the drug discovery process by reducing time, costs, and labor requirements. These advancements include various methods, such as investigating small molecule ligands binding to proteins, exploring alternative protein conformations, and solvation mapping on the protein surfaces. Among these methods, understanding the correlation between protein-ligand binding and the role of solvation is important.

A fundamental concept in protein-ligand binding is shape and electrostatic complementarity, which is complicated by the inherent flexibility of proteins. In the absence of small molecule ligands, proteins are complementary to surface …

Hereditary Spherocytosis Due To A Novel Variant, P.Q1034x, In The Beta Subunit Of The Spectrin Gene: A Case Report, Emmalee M. Kugler, Akash Patel, Faraz Afridi, Maria I. Scarano, Rafat Ahmed

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Background: Heterozygous pathogenic variants of SPTB cause hereditary spherocytosis (HS) in a quarter of cases. Case report: A 14-day-old male presenting with persistent anemia and hyperbilirubinemia was diagnosed with HS by increased red blood cell osmotic fragility and decreased fluorescence on the eosin-5′-maleimide binding test. For his failure to thrive and hypotonia, genetic sequencing revealed a de novo variant of the SPTB gene (p.Q1034X) on exon 15. This variant is predicted to cause loss of normal protein function either through protein truncation or nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. A variant of uncertain significance (p.R438W) in the chondroitin sulfate synthase 1 (CHSY1) gene …

Burnout, Amanda Almeida Sep 2024

Burnout, Amanda Almeida

be Still

I loved writing since I was 12. I learned putting words on paper solidifies the human experience, whether it be through poetry, music, stories, or simply free-writing one's thoughts. Attending medical school has broadened my experience with other realities to an unexpected degree. I realize that wanting to save lives through healthcare comes at a great cost to the person pursuing a career in medicine. Writing about the intensity of medical school helped me cope and I hope that my future patients will come to understand, sometimes, the only way out is through, and coping by using the things we …

Key Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Among Academic Staff In The University, Victor Amadi Stephen

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations

Job satisfaction (JS) undoubtedly impacts significantly on the productive capacity and general well-being of academic staff within universities. Poor JS affects not only individual performance but also broader institutional goals and may culminate in a decline in staff morale, disloyalty, constant labor migration and unending industrial actions by labor unions within the university. Enhancing job satisfaction can improve staff’s quality of service, staff retention, productivity, and the overall academic quality of the institutions. This study reviews factors associated with job satisfaction among academic staff in universities, and how these factors independently contribute to overall job satisfaction. This study draws on …

Bilio-Cecal Stent Migration Presenting As Massive Rectal Bleeding., Lefika Bathobakae, Shady Geris, Mohita Jariwala, Mansi Patel, Jessica Escobar, Ruhin Yuridullah, Kamal Amer, Yana Cavanagh

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Endoscopic biliary stenting is a well-established intervention for the treatment of biliary, hepatic, and pancreatic disorders. The common indications include strictures, neoplasms, stones, infections, and bile leaks. Stents can be occluded, predisposing patients to ascending cholangitis and biliary sepsis. Distal stent migration is another known complication of endoscopic stenting and is usually spontaneous. Bowel perforation, abscesses, bleeding, and pancreatitis are rare complications of distal stent migration and are usually limited to the duodenum. Herein, we describe an extremely rare case of bilio-cecal stent migration presenting as rectal bleeding.
