Serum And Urine Interferon-Inducible Protein 10, Galectin-9, And Siglec-1 As Biomarkers Of Disease Activity In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Şafak Mi̇ri̇oğlu, Suzan Çinar, Ömer Uludağ, Erdem Gürel, Sibel Varelci̇, Yasemin Özlük, Işın Kiliçaslan, Yasemin Yalçinkaya, Halil Yazici, Ahmet Gül, Murat İnanç, Bahar Artim Esen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the association of serum (s) and urine (u) IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 with disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Materials and methods: Sixty-three patients with active SLE (31 renal, 32 extrarenal) were included. Thirty patients with inactive SLE (15 renal, 15 extrarenal), 17 with renal active AAV, and 32 healthy volunteers were selected as control groups. Serum and urine IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 were tested using ELISA.Results: Levels of sIP-10 (p = 0.046), uIP-10 (p < 0.001), sGalectin-9 (p = 0.03), and uSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.006) were significantly higher in active SLE group compared to the inactive SLE; however, no differences were detected in the comparison of uGalectin-9 (p = 0.18) and sSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.69) between two groups. None of the biomarkers discriminated patients with active renal SLE from active extrarenal SLE. ROC analyses revealed an AUC of 0.63 (0.52–0.73) for sIP-10, 0.78 (0.68–0.86) for uIP-10, 0.64 (0.53–0.74) for sGalectin-9, and 0.68 (0.57–0.77) for uSIGLEC-1 in discriminating disease activity in SLE, which did not outperform C3 (0.75, 0.64–0.84) and C4 (0.72, 0.61–0.82). sIP-10 (p = 0.001), uIP-10 (p = 0.042), and uGalectin-9 (p = 0.009) were significantly increased in patients with active renal SLE compared to active renal AAV. sGalectin-9 (p < 0.001) and sIP-10 levels (p = 0.06) were decreased after 8 (5–22.5) months of treatment. Conclusion: sIP-10, uIP-10, sGalectin-9, and uSIGLEC-1 reflect global disease activity in SLE but do not outperform C3 and C4. sIP-10 and uIP-10 may be specific for active SLE compared to active AAV. sIP-10 and sGalectin-9 might be valuable in monitoring response after treatment.

Background/aim: Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease involving dysregulation of fat metabolism that affects 13% of the world’s population. Obesity has been linked to dyslipidemia with a lot of complication, including stroke, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and so on. One of the natural resources that have several potential effects including anticholesterol, antiobesity, and antidyslipidemia is the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea/CT). CT’s petal has been found to contain high levels of anthocyanins and tannins that can inhibit the biosynthesis of cholesterol and lipid. This study aims to investigate the antiobesity and antidyslipidemic effects of Clitoria ternatea extract (CTE).Materials and …

Mammary gland infections occur due to bacterial changes in the mammary tissue. Studies conducted in recent years have reported variations in the most common bacteria differ according to geographical locations. California mastitis test (CMT), somatic cell count (SCC), and aerobic colony count (ACC) analyses were performed on approximately 50 mL of hygienically collected raw milk samples. Raw milk was also subjected to conventional bacteriological isolation and identification. Bacterial diversity and rates in raw milk were compared through metagenome analysis. Two samples, one from healthy milk and another from subclinical milk with mastitis, were independently tested to determine whether there were …

This study investigated serum, vitreous, and anterior chamber fluid electrolyte changes, corneal thickness (CT),corneal volume (CV), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) as an auxiliary diagnostic method in theidentification of drowning in fresh or salt water.Materials and methods: The study used 35 healthy, adult, male, white New Zealand rabbits, seperated into five groups (control, saltwaterdrowning (SWD), saltwater immersion (SWI), freshwater drowning (FWD), freshwater immersion (FWI)). CT, CV, ACV, and ACDmeasurements were made with Pentacam topography at 0, 2, and 4 h in all groups. Magnesium (mg), sodium (Na), and chlorine (Cl)were measured in the blood at 0 …

Intestinal neomucosa formation is a technique defined for the treatment of short bowel syndrome. This study evaluates the effect of glutamine and omega-3 fatty acids on the growth of intestinal neomucosa on the colonic serosal surface has been evaluated.Materials and methods: Thirty-two adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: sham, control, glutamine, and omega-3. Laparotomy was performed on all groups. For rats other than the sham group, a 1-cm full-thickness incision was made 4 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve, and colonic serosal surface was sutured as a serosal patch over these openings. By using the oral …

In this prospective observational study, our goal was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of oxidative stress (OS) parameters and regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) in addition to evaluating postoperative clinical outcomes among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).Materials and methods: This study comprised 64 adult patients undergoing elective CABG (on-pump [n = 48] and off-pump [n = 16]) procedures. Serum OS levels and rSO2 values were measured intraoperatively at three specific time points: T1 (after induction), T2 (15 min before aortic cross-clamp removal or the final distal anastomosis), and T3 (15 min after aortic cross-clamp removal …

Isokinetic strength assessment of the rotator cuff muscle is frequently applied in a variety of shoulder postures, butnone of these consider muscular architecture, which is one of the most important aspects of improving strength development. This studyaimed to examine the test and retest reliability and validity of the muscle architecture-based position (MABP), which is 25° abductionand 20° external rotation, in healthy subjects to be able to select a better isokinetic assessment position for shoulder rotator cuff muscles.Materials and methods: A total of 54 healthy males with a mean age of 21.0 ± 1.2 years and mean body mass index of …
